  1. We're nearly at the end of the year, now. As we normally do a "what have been your favourite albums" thread, it seemed rude not to make this one. Reluctant as I am to spout off on the internet (cough), here's a few that pop in to my head. I think it's been a better year than last, though I've perhaps bought less new music (and more older stuff that I've discovered or re-discovered). In no particular order then, here's my 10. a. The Lucid Dream - The Lucid dream Post rock from Carlisle I think. Nicely builds. b. The Fall - Sub-Lingual Tablet. This is a good, good album. c. Floating Points - Elaenia Instrumental d. Low - Ones and Sixes Hip Hop producer. Slowcore band. Strange mix that works. e. Torres - Sprinter Canadian, I think f. OOFJ - Acute Feast Scandi -Electronica g. Ólafur Arnalds & Nils Frahm - Collaborative Works. Chill. h. Sexwitch - Sexwitch Mental but in a good way i. Deerhunter - Fading Frontier j. Courtney Barnett - Sometimes I Sit and Think, And Sometimes I Just Sit She's just great with lyrics.
  2. What are you listening to with the windows rolled down and volume turned up?
  3. My Dad: Classic Rock, Blues, Soul, Jazz, Classical My Mum: Some Classic Rock (The softer stuff), Classical It's amazing how much classical music I recognize but have no idea who the composer is. The stuff I preferred as a kid were my Dad's records, like Jimi Hendrix, Stones, Aretha Franklin, Beatles. The classical was just too boring and grandiose, and I still think much of it is, but there is some fantastic classical music, no doubt.

    Mixtapes 2014

Done a CD mix of stuff picked up in 2014 and a separate classical selection for another website. Sending a couple out to VTers anyway, and already sorted a swap for something that I'm after, so why not throw it open? If you've got something you'd like to share, post it, see if you get any takers? Chrisp, I got a smashing CD from a Welsh collector of, er, Welsh stuff. Will run you a copy.

    New Music 2014

Anyone getting the feeling might have a good 2014?
  6. OK guys and gals, I'm tired of waiting for someone to start this thread. Let's have them... Gonna have a think about mine, when I go do my big shop in a bit,
  7. So we have the top 10 films of all time. I am wondering who your favourite bands/singers of all time are? If you are like me this changes regularly, so it'll probably have a few changes this time next month! I'm not putting this in order yet. Paul Simon The Clash Marvin Gaye Jackie Wilson John Legend Buddy Holly The Smiths Bob Marley Goo Goo Dolls Dusty Springfield Over t'you.
  8. Inspired by a thread elsewhere on t'internet, I thought this was an interesting question because I'm sure everyone has an answer. While everyone has artists that they can't stand and songs that they can't stand, is there a song you can't help but love from one of those same artists that you ordinarily switch off? Go for it music lovers. EDIT : To clarify. It's not even a 'guilty pleasures' thread because that implies the artist(s) is(are) in some way unfashionable to start with. This is just any artist, trendy or otherwise.

  10. Lovely people, Planning all things Olympics, suggestions for my music that i should have playing during my run/s? GO!
  11. We're well into December now so its that time of the year, the time when we look back on our favourite music of the year. Must say its been a great year for me, my list of albums will be posted later but please no top 10's, a list is as long as it needs to be.

    New Music 2013

Was looking for something for me, but found something for Hogso. Prurient & Nico Vascellari.
  13. I think "Are You Experienced?" by Jimi Hendrix flipped the rock and roll scene on its head. Gotta be in the top 10 debut albums.
  14. I thought this was worth its own topic. Go check your Amazon cloud drive... BBC
  15. Even though it's still a bit chilly, summer is right around the corner. So with that in mind, what song or songs to you associate with summertime? What are some of your faves?
  16. Oft maligned, but with the right subject matter and a compiler that knows their salt, they can be great. This is a fave. The Dedricks' glorious syrupy sunshine pop was mostly, sadly, overlooked Perfection in vocal harmony, fans of the Beach Boys and the Association could do much worse. So what are yours? It could be for non musical reasons (a time and place album). Doesn't have to be a band, or indeed have 'Best Of' in the title, it can be chronical, genre, label or pick out a decent part of a career (Think 'Eponymous' by REM or 'We Sold Our Soul For Rock 'N' Roll' by Sabbath - which were comps of early material). Or it might just have had everything you wanted on it.
  17. I want to make a mixtape for somebody as a gift, but I want to do it on cassette. None of this USB malarkey, I'm going for old school charm. I don't have a cassette deck, just a laptop and my iTunes collection. What's the best way to go about it?

I've removed the thread. Copyright infringement is illegal and doing it on any scale is almost certainly criminal. I'm not dealing with the police because people want to boast about their illegal acts. I'll leave this thread open for people to discuss the issues around copyright infringement, but do not talk about anything you do that is illegal. For the record, even making backups is illegal in the UK.
  19. I'm wondering if any of you knowledgeable VT-ers can help me at all. I heard a song a couple of years ago on 6 Music. It was from a Peel Session, and was by a band called Melys. The song was a cover of 'Hey, that's no way to say goodbye' by Leonard Cohen. I've searched and searched, but can't find it anywhere to either buy or download. It is on a certain Peel session compilation, somewhere. The details I can find online are that is was recorded for John Peel on 19th Dec 1999. Any help appreciated guys!
  20. I'm 53. Seen and heard a lot of artists, bands and listened to lots of music in my time, I have phases, like everybody, of listening to particular artists and new bands - current faves are Of Monsters and Men and Neil Young. But the one album that is a constant in my life is Disintegration by The Cure. Just thought I'd share.
  21. Well, for real. I'm going to watch Turandot tomorrow. The missus likes opera very much so I gave her that for a christmas present. For two reasons: 1: I knew she'd be very happy as she hasn't been able to go and watch an opera for many years. And she was overwhelmed so it's already worth it. 2: I don't listen to it myself, but thought that I have to see at least one in my lifetime so this is a good opportunity. Now, is there anyone in here who likes opera and/or has seen Turandot? She says that Puccini's among the most easy listening opera writers and a good one to start with. And her favourite. I don't really know what to expect.
  22. The year's not quite over, but December is typically a slow month for new music, so let's get this show on the road. Here's last year's thread for reference. Favourites? Disappointments? Feel free to add those you played a hell of a lot this year that weren't released in 2012 as well. YouTube/other sample links are appreciated by all! For me... Probably my biggest disappointment of the year was Soundgarden’s new album – so painfully generic compared to what they used to be capable of. We also lost one of my favourite punk front-men this year – Tony Sly of No Use For A Name – which was obviously a major downer.
  23. Prompted by discussion in the General Chat topic.... Which xmas songs or tunes are your favourite and which do you despise?
  24. I checked their site out just a few minutes ago and saw this: New Lineup September 1, 2012 geoff I’m sure the last few months have been very frustrating for you. I know they have been for me. There are so many questions and so few answers. It is said that adversity makes one stronger. Well, I’m definitely in a better place now than I’ve ever been before. I feel very positive and excited. The challenge, when you’re in a creative environment, is keeping things fresh and invigorating, and after working with the same people for thirty years, it gets very difficult—You walk into the room, and everybody knows what everyone is going to do. There’s no spark, the chemistry is very tried and true and you just keep coming up with the same ways of expressing yourself. Today is a new day and I am thrilled to announce the new Queensrÿche. Joining me are: Rudy Sarzo, Bobby Blotzer, Kelly Gray and Randy Gane. Together we shall embark on a new musical journey that will be a greater extension of where Queensrÿche has ever been. With this new project, with these new people, it’s a whole new scene. There are new ideas, different musical backgrounds and a whole new set of parameters. Everyone has ideas you haven’t heard before, and everyone is throwing them against the wall and suddenly … the music has a whole new life. I look forward to this new life and I hope to see you on tour as all of us come together and begin this new era. Geoff Tate Here So Geoff Tate, a hero of mine, has parted from all of the others and formed a new band and still calls them Queensryche? Why have they parted? Does anyone know? And for some strange reason I'd be happier if he called it something else, like The Geoff Tate project.
