  1. Thought about putting this in the history thread, but it's as much current affairs, and I thought it was worth one of its own. Mods feel free to move it if you disagree. I kind of owe my existence to the Easter Rising. My Dad's family were Catholic Dubliners, and left Ireland in 1916 for Merseyside, simply to escape the whole Black-and-Tan shitstorm that was kicking off. He was 12 at the time. He moved to Birmingham for work during WWII, met my Mum (Brummie, C of E), and here I am. What with that background, and the fact that I'm a history graduate, this centenary is of some interest to me. I know we have a lot of Irish Villa fans on this site, so I'd be interested to know their take on the whole thing - in terms of the history itself, the changing attitudes to it, the way it is being commemorated, and the likelihood of political/terrorist activity in the next few week. . There was a fascinating discussion with a bunch of Irish historians on Radio 4's "Start the Week" this morning. I strongly recommend a listen for anyone who's interested in the subject. 45 minute programme. Start the Week (BBC iPlayer)
  2. Stating the obvious, it's 100 years since the outbreak of World War 1. The kids have done it in school and are as unimpressed as only kids can be when faced with old people talking about black and white pictures. It's a subject I've never really been that interested in but lately I've been more interested in the politics around the lead up to it and the repurcussions of the post war treaties. I do love a good map and I've poured over the ever changing map of europe at around this time. (not intended as a map thread)
  3. Most VTers will probably ignore this, but for those who love a bit of history we've all probably noticed the Richard III headlines. Considering I've read various stories about him being dragged around the streets of Leicester, being thrown in the river and his led coffin used as a horse trough not to mention character assassainations and muddled facts from the Tudor period...it's a miricle that they've actually found him. The guys that found the old documents about the priory must be pinching themselves!
  4. Just came across this raft of shots from the Nazi death camps, and when the Yanks discovered some of them. Very grisly, don't look if easily upset http://spaceghetto.s...-didnt-happen-0
