  1. I just had a pint in the pub (Moorhouses Pendle Witches Brew) then Large Cod, Chips and Gravy from the local chippie. I am now happy (and full).
  2. A thread to celebrate whatever happened on X years to the day. Funny, sad, political, sporting - an opportunity for dewy-eyed nostalgia. It's 28 years today since Maradona did the most iconic warm-up ever -

    Hobbies

Inspired by @mjmooney not 'getting' Lego in an Airfix world, what are your hobbys? Obviously we have a fair few gymhounds here and the odd musician, and I guess technically the gaming forum is dedicated to a hobby, but it's there anything else you do for the sheer enjoyment of it (fnarr)? Or is life too short? Over the last couple of years I've become a bit of a modeller. Specifically Gundam models. Perhaps a bit odd given my long standing dislike of anime, and the fact I've barely watched any of the many, many (...many) Gundam series there's been over the years, but I like the designs of the mobile suits. It's a slightly simpler form of model making than the likes of Airfix and the classic 'armor' style of military modelling, as the kits almost entirely are glue free and don't require paint, it's more like a more involved Lego (you still need tools for instance, nippers, a craft knife, sanding sticks) and there's a bit of skill to making the models well - getting rid of the nub marks, applying decals (waterslides preferably). I'm now at the point that I'm doing full repaints of the kits and doing some weathering. Still learning but I'm getting better and it's nice to have that getting at the end that you've got something just slightly unique. A few competed builds These are mostly 99% complete. Each needs a matte top coat and the odd thing here and there. None are perfect, by any means, but they're getting better and I'm learning skills with an airbrush and weathering skills. So, what do you fill your days with doing when aren't at work, or asleep, or desperately trying to stay alive?
  4. I’m interested in where you’re from or where you travel from to games . Wouldn’t mind adding a survey but not sure how you do it. If you don’t come to games that’s fine but still say where you’re from …. Birmingham West Midlands conurbation area Other parts of midlands Outside of midlands Ireland/Wales/Scotland Abroad Anyway I travel to games from Staffordshire

    Families

As distinct from the Relationship Thread, which focuses on sexual/romantic partners, thought I'd start one on our other family relationships - parents, grandparents, children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters, cousins, uncles, aunts and in-laws. How do you get on with yours? Love them or hate them? Or both? I'm convinced that a huge part of my personality (both good and bad) is due to being the only child of elderly parents. I'm consequently intrigued and baffled by siblings, and how they interact - my own two daughters are the best of friends, which is a huge relief, as some of my friends seemed to have quite bad relationships with their brothers and sisters. Basically, our family mostly seems to work pretty well, without too many problems, but I know this isn't the case for everyone. Fire away.
  6. Does anyone think Jack Woodward has always been a great commentator at Villa? I honestly like listening to him although I haven't so far this season as we've been on TV. I like the way he shows his passion for Villa on and off the mic, particularly when he was commentating on the Watford game last season (2-1 win) when Konsa/Mings goal went in and Woodward went ballistic. I am just asking for opinions as I thought I'd create this subject.
  7. After watching Match of the Day and also listening to national radio we will apparently get found out big time next season if we continue with our 'suicidal' high line. Apparently if Son had waited a split second on each occasion and also finished better we would have lost the game (if my Auntie had a cock etc...) Is there merit in the criticism or is it just sour grapes from the London centric press?
  8. I've always been curious as to why the club don't list the coaching staff on the club website. It would be good to see how we compare with other clubs since we are always talking about being ambitious. I know we would employ plenty of others within the academy staff but how does this list compare to other teams staff ? Sporting Director : Johan Lange Head Coach : Steven Gerrard Assistant : Neil Critchley Assistant : Gary MCallister GK Coach : Neil Cutler Technical Coach : Tom Culshaw Set Pieces Coach : Austin MacPhee Coach : Aaron Danks Head of Fitness and Conditioning : Jordan Milsom Performance Director : Jeremy Oliver Physical Performance Scientist : Aman Singh Shergill Strength and Conditioning Coach : Oli Stevenson Physical Performance Coach : Patrick Moore Head of Nutrition : Marcus Hannon Psychologist : Martin Littlewood Head of Sport Medicine and Science : Ricky Shamji Lead Physio : Alan Smith Physio : Steven Polley Physio : Rob Marshall Lead Analyst : Scott Mason Head of Performance Analyst : David Stewart Performance Analyst : Scott Adey-Linforth Performance Analyst : Joseph Ure Head of Research : Frederik Leth Lead Data Scientist and Engineer : Arjav Trivedi Operations Manager : Matt Bennett Player Care Manager : Phil Roscoe Loan Player Manager : Mile Jedinak Development Coach : Nick Haycock Academy Manager : Sean Verity Chief Scout : Robert Mackenzie Scout : Kristian Heames

  10. I expect most people to just stick to the one or two aftershaves they get for Christmas 'til they'e empty, but some people like myself enjoy collecting them. Considering I only started getting into collecting them about six months ago I have a decent haul of 15 and many samples I'll get round to buying a full bottle of. Hugo Boss - Boss Bottled Thierry Mugler - Pure Malt Yves Saint-Laurent - La Nuit de l'Homme Christian Dior - Dior Homme Intense Creed - Green Irish Tweed Creed - Aventus Jean-Paul Gaultier - Le Male Christian Dior - Fahrenheit Christian Dior - Fahrenheit Absolute Issey Miyake - L'eau D'Issey Pour Homme Ralph Lauren - Big Pony #4 Burberry - London Burberry - Touch Lacoste - Elegance John Varvatos - Vintage Some more expensive than others. My top three based on smell alone would probably have to be Green Irish Tweed, Dior Homme Intense and La Nuit de l'Homme.
  11. I like a good interview, on camera or in print/text. I also like train wreck interviews. What are some interviews you'll never forget?

Do you wear hat? Do you own multiple types of hats? Are there commonly worn types of hats you don't like?
  13. Anyone on here have a pilot's license? Considering getting one? Any enthusiasts? Air show fans? Flight simulator participants? Crash reel watchers?

    Dogs...

Rival thread Nothing better than a good walk with the dogs in either summer or winter IMO.
  15. I'm 44 this year, and over the last couple of years, i've been thinking more about retirement/pensions/options etc. My state retirement age is 68, but there is no way I'm working until then. I don't think I physically could! My private pension access will be at 57 (increasing from 55), but ideally I want to be winding down from my early 50s. By that, I mean, not working in the same stressful role I am now, and doing something I can switch off from at 5pm, perhaps part time? I get the feeling there are a lot of people on this board that are around my age, and slightly older and was wondering whether anyone else was thinking about it, or had a plan? The days of final salary gold plated pensions are almost gone, and a lot of people are going to have a shock about how much you need to pay into a DCS pension in order to get a comfortable retirement. Its not a subject thats ever really discussed when you are younger and by the time you start taking notice, it can be too late. So, what are peoples plans? Downsizing property? Planning on working until you drop? Waiting on inheritance (a lot of people do!), Head in the sand? For me, its a combination of 20%+ into my pension every month, a chunk into a SAYE scheme at work and saving all my dividends/bonuses and investing them into index funds/cash ISAs. Then keeping my fingers crossed!
  16. Witnessing the endless tsunami of abuse and ridicule that Harry Maguire continues to endure makes me really feel for the guy. Some people say that because he makes more in a week than most people make in a year, he should just grin and bear it. No player in the pre-social media age received this level of steady, brutal treatment other than African players in Serie A or other leagues where racist abuse was commonplace. Yes, his gaffes are endless and funny and because he's Man Utd, there's extra glee involved in the ongoing spectacle. But the personal attacks and shaming are a level beyond just having a laugh. As we've seen with Dele Alli, Sancho and Richarlison, some players are particularly vulnerable psychologically. And we cannot forget Gary Speed. I worry for Harry and I think a move to a new club and maybe a new league would benefit him mentally and on the pitch. Online abuse is an intractable problem though and it will bite him again at the first blunder. You have to wonder if the guy is ever tempted to just hang up his boots.
  17. From their youthful photo. Done this before but not for a few years. Ten to get, starting with 1.
  18. The earth is a wreck. War, famine, plague, etc. have ravaged humanity and ended civilisation as we know it. There's no electricity, the water system is gone, and there may be bandits stalking the land. You have managed to band together with a small group of hardy fellow, desperate survivors. Besides being another mouth to feed, how will you make yourself useful to the group? What's something useful and important you think that you could create or build or collaborate with others to make for your group of survivors, something that might help you all?

    Fallen Angels

This is about people that you liked that disgraced themselves, completely destroying any positive thoughts that you might have had towards them. It can be someone only you know or someone famous, your reasons can be serious, silly or whimsical? I'll start with Alan MacLeod aka Weyheyhey!! Alan made one of my favourite Breakcore releases and also my favourite James Bond based dancer. I'd included 'For Your Ears Only' on a mix intended for public release, but going about crediting all the artists on the mix it became apparent that the track would have to be pulled. Reddit revealed that Alan was taking a break from music, and he'd gone to Thailand to abuse children. A few searches later confirmed the allegations weren't a sick joke, and Macleod was indeed a kiddy fiddler What a word removed.
  20. Mine are pretty good. I live on a short private drive, the first house of 5. Next door is a Villa season ticket holder so that’s good. They are very quiet and keep themselves to themselves. Ideal neighbours really. I mentioned before though that for fun we have creates fake personalities for some of the others. The lovely old retired bloke 2 doors down is actually a peeping tom who hides in the bushes and watches through our windows pleasuring himself. When I close the curtains at night I’ll say “shows over John, go home”. The house where they kill, freeze and cook random callers. Then there’s “Cruella” who is a dog snatcher I’m sure our neighbours would have a view on my son playing football in the garden and slamming it off the fence panels.
  21. I feel like gentrification is a bit of a catch all term for various things, some of which are good and some are bad. Partly it's just house prices going up and brick-and-mortar shops closing down, and people blame it on their neighbourhood "losing its character" rather than our insane housing bubble and online shopping. Sometimes it's demolishing a violent, crime-ridden estate and building new housing there, and basically cleaning up an area of a city. Sometimes it's posh poverty tourists moving into a community and ruining the culture of a place. Do people have a right to live as adults in the neighbourhood they grew up in? Just wondering what people's experiences of it are and whether you think gentrification is really a useful way of describing what happens to places
  22. Must admit that this one's 100% inspired by @foreveryoung. Now there's a home for hot takes on stuff that more people really ought to have hot takes on ...
  23. Did you play with any strange and possibly hazardous toys? Perhaps you re-purposed something in a way it wasn't meant, and made it dangerous. Maybe you're a parent and you've stepped on a Lego piece and nearly killed yourself. My sisters had the infamous Easy Bake Oven. I do seem to remember some howls from minor burns. I owned Clackers/Klackers around 1977 or so. Excellent things. I don't remember anyone every hurt by them. Well, it's coming back to me. Kids would hit each other with them , but that was considered a no-turning-back aggressive move that would lead to fights. I feel like I saw those things in change jars and utility drawers for decades later. Don't know what I ever did to lose them. They seemed indestructible.
