  1. source Sounds like it's about to kick off due to the bombings in Thailand this morning.
  2. Obama has tapped John Kerry for Secretary of State, with Hillary Clinton resigning. He should easily be approved, meaning Massachusetts be short one senator and will have it's second special election for senator in three years. It's possible that the seat goes to a Republican, (most likely Scott Brown again) so this is a risky move by Obama. The early consensus is that Ted Kennedy Jr. will run for the Dems.
  3. Thought it was probably time for a thread specific to the 'kippers and their quest for a new leader. Fact is, they clearly have millions of supporters and some of them must be on this board, I guess. This shouldn't just be about the smug posting of clippings proving they are all nutjobs. Though I suspect approximately 92% of the content will be precisely that...
  4. Really just a place to drop the occasional polling graphic or whatever to cover the SNP, or Irish Unification or Mebyon Kernow. SNP now appear to be polling above 50% even with the don’t knows removed from the stats. You’re in a potentially tricky place when you’re telling the majority that they can’t have a democratic vote. (apologies if a version of this thread already exists, I’ve lost it if it does)
  5. Think this needs its own thread so labour fans who do you fancy? I am tipping Chuka Umunna as Labour need a complete revamp and modernising after this disaster election. seems to have done well in his local area.
  6. Apologies all round. I appear to have inadvertently deleted the old thread, instead of a single post. (Hopefully it can be recovered by a less incompetent mod, but meanwhile, please carry on here.) Anyway, so, overpriced nuclear power stations, pig's heads, lies and incompetence... The thread on the condem gov't is here
  7. As the original thread was a poll (coming over here, fixing our plumbing...no sorry that's Poles) it expired. So here's a new topic to discuss ever closer union in which we all have to speak Lithuanian / a return to the 1950s where Britannia was best at everything.
  8. I thought maybe the train chat shouldn’t be in the baby eating thread and maybe it needs to be a holistic sort of thread for all things housing and energy and trains and stuff. It’s bound to have an element of bolitics about it, but maybe it’s not party political? Not just the bargain priced facility for people living in Brum to get to just outside London 10 minutes quicker. But mainly that until you all agree I’m right.
  9. TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — Tens of thousands of Israelis on Saturday protested their far-right government’s plans to overhaul the legal system, three days after parliament advanced a bill that would enable lawmakers to overturn a Supreme Court decision with a simple majority. https://apnews.com/article/politics-benjamin-netanyahu-tel-aviv-israel-6084a0737b4c5a732846164aa5592e0c Israel is on a trajectory to becoming undemocratic - it's a dark time for the country and folks are protesting. I'm interested in the dynamics of Israeli society - not knowing a great deal myself and would welcome those that do understand it to offer their candid thoughts on where it is going. The country as a nuclear power in my view has a large part to play on the world stage - yet it is remaining out of the Ukraine situation. Yet it is heavily funded by the USA, who are all in on Ukraine - why is this so. This thread has not been created to slag the country off - but to understand it better - so please no insults - although I'm sure free speech is allowed here so long as there's something credible to point to.
  10. Quite likely. He will of course exact a price for his, erm, 'change of heart'. Like the Chinese, Russian foreign policy maneuvering is all about the long game..
  11. Saw a statement today from Officer w70 that said Duggan went for a gun !!! Which may or may not have actually been in the boot of the taxi  All I can assume is the police had this bloke under surveillance and thus knew about the gun and therfore when they moved in on him there were a few nervous police officers who appear to have decided to shoot first ask questions later ... Or the Uk police watched minority report at training school and have decided that executing people before they carry out a crime is the way forward ?? The taxi driver presumably will have something to say at some point , hes been silenced so far for whatever reason !!
  12. I was unable to find a topic that dealt with Irish politics at all. I also added the word "Society" to the topic because I'd hate to exclude some of the interesting social issues that intersect with Irish politics. I acknowledge my wholesale ignorance of the subject. I have an inkling of different ways in which the term "Ireland" might itself be contested, but for the purposes of this topic, I mean the island of Ireland and the politics and societies of that island and their peoples and diaspora.
  13. It's been mentioned a lot in many of the Politics topics but our national broadcaster is becoming a disgrace when it comes to it's political content. I've always been a supporter and realise that slight biases will always be apparent in a service that has an obligation to be fair and unbiased but I do feel it has crossed the line from the unconscious bias programmes always showed (both ways) into an area where it's overt bias is now becoming very apparent and destructive to both itself and the country. I'm still a proponent of the licence fee but something really needs to change at the BBC, their political content is shockingly biased and seemingly they aren't even trying to hide it. I came across this story today and it highlights how ludicrous the situation has become. I'm a supporter of neither the Unionist or the SNP The National
  14. **** me, this Neil Wallis bod has spent more time on Newsnight in the last couple of weeks than either Maitliss or Esler. I hope they aren't paying him for his 'expert' opinion.
  15. I figure a catchall thread would be good for this part of the world. I'm starting one now because one time hero Daniel Ortega is now a murderous tyrant as 70% of the roads in Nicaragua are currently blocked by protesters who want him to resign. The heady days of the Sandinistas seem a long time ago. Ortega's armed forces are shooting to kill and are killing. He's got a civilian paramilitary carrying out most of it. I wouldn't be surprised if Trump sends the marines in there, it would be an easy win and he can rouse his base with it as the midterm elections near. Reagan invaded Grenada, Bush Sr. invaded Panama. If Bush Jr. didn't invade Iraq, I think he would have invaded Venezuela. It's a cynical quick fix for American presidents.
  16. For as long as I can remember, literally everyday there has been a story on the Guardian website that references either the holocaust or some sort of Jewish interest story - there is no Islam equivalent. It never stops being the case and I challenge anyone neutral to also notice this. My point is that there is a very good PR dept for Jewish interest Vs and especially Palestine interest. And no this is not antisemitic.
  17. I'm aware of the danger and the colonial baggage implicit in referring to "Africa" in a kind of sweeping way as this thread does, but there are of course many unifying and intermingling challenges and histories and cultural traditions that, I feel, justify it. I started this thread mostly because I didn't see a place to address the recent outbreak of coups in west and central Africa, which are so troubling. The coup is Niger is huge and tragic, toppling a democratically elected leader. But a topic called African Coups is perhaps more problematic than one called Africa: Contemporary Politics. One thread seems too little to talk about "Africa" and politics, of course. It's so complex a topic. I get that. Consider that we don't have a "North American Politics" or an "Asian Politics" thread, for instance. It may make you wonder, why an "Africa" one? Again, I just think that there is a strong mutually nurtured and shared awareness among large parts of urban Africa, that thread does make sense, despite how what's happening in Pretoria is so different from what's happening in, say, Cairo. I do feel like this post if not the thread itself also connects the the Global Far Right thread, too, because the crop of new "strongmen" in west and central Africa have made their fondness for people like Putin clear.
  18. Saturday’s March will be massive and I just stood still at a rugby match for remembrance. Those that oppose the idea of-remembrance and peace are against peace
  19. It looks inevitable that some large scale violence is on the cards
  20. Will it be the writing on the wall for the Tories, or will it prove there’s enough people who will do what they always do despite the damage it causes?
  21. first safe seat to labour. only shock was how well UKIP did there. Lib Dems got destroyed. Think they are in for a thumping tonight
  22. Not really as important for the UK as we're out of the EU now, but these elections are hailed as one of the most important in Europe for a while. The current government are looking for a 3rd term, they're right-wing religious conservatives with pretty left wing economic policies, who are constantly at war with the EU, on the topics of migration and the rule of law. Another win for them would risk a Pol-exit in future. The PM is Morawiecki but everyone knows Poland is run by Jaroslaw Kaczynski. This guy, is a lunatic. He's especially lost his mind since his twin brother (the President at the time) died in a plane crash. A win for them would keep the Hungary/Poland veto alliance intact, meaning both states can freely challenge the EU, and be supported by the other. Although the recent elections in Slovakia may also help with this. The above does a good job, but on the ground it's a complete mess. The two main parties detest each other, calling each other evil and wanting to destroy Poland. PiS have also attached a meaningless referendum to the election to order to mobilize their base. They also have complete control of the Polish BBC, with it churning out 24/7 government propaganda whilst ignoring important news that may reflect badly on it (this week 2 generals resigned, criticizing the government, the national broadcaster didn't even cover it) Neither main parties look like getting a majority. The current government are way short of majority in polling, and undecided's trend away from them. The minor parties may also be kingmakers with TD (Trzecia Droga - 3rd way / centre-right populist), Lewica (Left / centre-left) and Konfereracja (Confederation (yes named after the US thing) / far-right faux-libertarians) all polling about 8%-12% Good article in NY Times here: Opinion | The Stakes in Poland’s Election Are Very High - The New York Times (nytimes.com)
  23. What about this. The person who was creating pictures for cash was doing it via Only Fans and the BBC star was one of many sending money? I am just adding to the conversation, not bringing any knife wielding dogs, purely "could this potentially, be the case"?
