  1. Not sure if this is the correct place but I didn't feel it fitted the main football boards. Has anyone had any experience with getting shirts framed or using kits to do so?
  2. (Mods please merge if we already have a thread for this; I couldn't find one). If you're out walking in the countryside (which Mrs M and I do on a regular basis), and a stranger passes you coming the other way (KW), you obviously have to acknowledge them. But how? A simple nod and smile? A "Hi, lovely day, isn't it?" And who goes first? If they are staring ahead and not making eye contact, do you pointedly speak, thus forcing them to respond? Or do you match them by looking away (which will inevitably result in them catching you out with a "Hi" at the last second, making you the rude one). Simple enough out in the country. On a city street, the rules are reversed - even if there are no crowds around, greeting a total stranger would be a total no-no. At best they would think you know them, and they've failed to recognise you - thus causing embarrassing awkwardness. At worst, they think you're a dangerous psycho. But what about all the in-between scenarios? The quiet suburb or village? The canal towpath? And if you pass a group of people, do you have to at least nod to every one of them? Then there are generational variances. In my experience, us old codgers are far more likely to do this amongst ourselves. The teens and twenties, very rarely. The middle-aged, probably 50/50. And some people, seeing you approaching, will suddenly feel the urge to consult their phones, in an obvious ploy to sidestep the problem. Is this just a British thing, or is it universal?
  3. Any pointers, cheapest I can find is about 3k with him as the main driver and the Mrs as secondary (who has 5 years no claims) Sod that for a game of soldiers. Thanks in advance
  4. I keep hearing about this service, is it a con or a scam, it seems to be fairly genuine, but there’s no such thing as a free lunch, does anyone know the apple ?
  5. Hi All, Through my work I may get an opportunity to study in the UK for 12 months. There are 2 similar courses I am interested in, one is through University of Birmingham and the other through the University of Manchester. While Birmingham obviously grabbed my attention as a Villa fan, I wanted to get a feel for the reputation of both universities from people in country and anything else worth knowing, as far as living in each city, to help the decision making process. Thanks in advance
  6. I'm 44 this year, and over the last couple of years, i've been thinking more about retirement/pensions/options etc. My state retirement age is 68, but there is no way I'm working until then. I don't think I physically could! My private pension access will be at 57 (increasing from 55), but ideally I want to be winding down from my early 50s. By that, I mean, not working in the same stressful role I am now, and doing something I can switch off from at 5pm, perhaps part time? I get the feeling there are a lot of people on this board that are around my age, and slightly older and was wondering whether anyone else was thinking about it, or had a plan? The days of final salary gold plated pensions are almost gone, and a lot of people are going to have a shock about how much you need to pay into a DCS pension in order to get a comfortable retirement. Its not a subject thats ever really discussed when you are younger and by the time you start taking notice, it can be too late. So, what are peoples plans? Downsizing property? Planning on working until you drop? Waiting on inheritance (a lot of people do!), Head in the sand? For me, its a combination of 20%+ into my pension every month, a chunk into a SAYE scheme at work and saving all my dividends/bonuses and investing them into index funds/cash ISAs. Then keeping my fingers crossed!

    Chronic Pain

Anyone plagued with chronic pain? If so, what are you dealing with and how do you deal with it?
  8. Sorry, I know this might belong in The Boring Thread. Any advice on buying a vacuum cleaner? Our old (corded) Dyson has been pretty reliable, but after many years is reaching the end. We're tempted to get a cordless (Shark, etc.), for ease of use on the stairs, but I get the impression that they are less effective than the mains powered models. There is also a huge range of choice of manufacturers and prices. Is it worth paying more? What say the VT hoovering massive?
  9. Inspired by the valuing stamp collection topic, I’m keen to know if there is a better way of getting my vintage Star Wars figures from the 70s/80s/90s valued. I’d prefer to avoid taking them to a shop as they will always offer lower than what they are worth, for obvious reasons. I don’t really want to go down the eBay route, as I need someone to actually look at the items and understand what is there.
  10. Has anybody done this? I've got an idea, I've looked around and can't see anyone else doing it. There are other similar products but not with the refinement I intend and certainly not for the use I have in mind. I literally have no idea where to start, how to prototype, how to find a manufacturer, market research etc. The only thing I know is the demographic that I would be marketing to. It is niche and a delicate subject so I can't just stick a random survey on Facebook etc. Any help gratefully received! I appreciate this is not exactly full of information though!
  11. Anybody ever done it? I inherited a stamp album from an older cousin in the early 60s. Lots of stamps from around the world, mostly pre- or immediately post-WWII. It has no sentimental value, so I'm interested in selling it, but I have no idea of value - and a deep distrust of dealers. Short of Googling each individual stamp (there are hundreds), how do I avoid being ripped off?
  12. Not sure where to start with this but I'm trying to reach out for a colleague and a friend who was recently a victim of rape. The issue goes deeper than that though as about a year ago she was working as a maid nfor a large hotel chain and one evening where she was given a room due to an event taking place , she was violently sexually assaulted by a higher member of staff. She was subjected to beating, being handcuffed and sexual assault. The aftermath of that attack was that the local police did not charge the assailant as they claimed there was not enough evidence ( despite the wounds and injuries she received ( cigarette burns all over her back, just one example. I should also add she is 21 and orrignally from Spain as is here in London studying. It shocked her to the core that he was not charged and could never understand why ? They believed his story that it was concensual BDSM.?? Moving forward a year to the last few weeks, where the assailant began to stalk her. He found out where she lived ( she moved area after the attack ) and began being outside her property for hours upon end. It was actually the landlord of her rented property who brought it to her attention asking if she knew who he was from the CCTV he had set up for the entrance. Apparently there was over 300 hours of him just standing there. She went to the poilice ( a different area now) and reportes the stalking which started to get worse , she would stay at a friend's and he would be outside, he would appear outside her workplace. And even on a train s h e took to work where for the first time he made verbal his intentions. He said he wanted to finish what he started. At this time she consoled in me and I tried to give her advise , to move out of where she was staying and concequenly she moved into a hotel in a. Different area. Yet once again he found her. One evening he turned up at the hotel and tried to convince the staff to let him up. They didn't let him apparently he smashed a few things and left..... Untill the following day. The story goes that he went back early in the day and convinced a staff member to let him up to the room claiming he wanted to suprise his fiance. When she came back from work she entered the room and she says she remembered looking to see if anyone was in the room (upon my advise/) she used the toilet and when she came out he was sitting on the edge of the bed .... She bolted for the door , but sadly did not make it. She fell unconscious. She woke up a few hours later half naked dazed and confused. She and flashes of what happend but that was it for the moment. She found out in the following days that she was given a drug and then she was raped and sexualy abused. From the initial investigation they managed to track the man down after a few days and arrested him. But then it goes downhill from here. There lawyer who seems to be very poor has been reporting back some things to her. Such as . They only want to give him between 3 and 5 years, apparently the manhas a wife who can't work and support herself as well as a small baby. Then she finds that the case it'self is being taken back to the original police station ,the one which closed the 1st case without any charges being brought. This made no sence untill she found out this Sunday and the rapist brother is a high up police chief in this police station !!!! This now explains why the 1st case was dropped and now she finds out that he is claiming that they were in a relationship and it is her making up all the lies and has stated proceedings to sue her ??!!!!!?????? I would appreciate any genuine advise or if anyone knows anyone that can help. I should add that the girl is deeply frightened , sleeps on average 2 hours a night due to nightmares , does not eat anymore, bits worth a day ! And has ended up twice falling unconscious because of this. She has also ended up in hospital about a week ago because she accidently took ibruprophkn which she is allergic to and ran a temperature of 44 degrees. The drs said she was lucky to be alive.. I'm trying to support her mentally but she really needs help. Thank you for reading this and again any advise will be greatly appreciated. Paul
  13. So I’ve had times when I’ve tried to get in to being the best version of myself in terms of more energy and vitality. Be from Keto, IF, tracking sleep, meditation, supplements etc. But theres a minefield of information out there and it’s very easy to get lost in it all. So I would love to hear if any VT’s are in to this type of thing and what lifestyle changes they have made which have really made a difference to how they generally feel. Supplements being a big one. Mods apologies if already threads on this or if it’s not appropriate..
  14. Is there anyone out there who can help a friend of mine (and honestly it is a friend not me, I hardly even look at Instagram)? They've been hacked and want to get their account either back or even deleted to protect their followers/friends from the same. They were sent a link from a friend (who it appears had been hacked too) which when used gave the hackers even details to change her email and contact nos. They then started spamming Bitcoin BS. Any help greatly appreciated
  15. So obviously I can't go into detail, but my ex is, after 2 years separated (now divorced) that she can stop me seeing our children on a whim, either by taking them on holiday on the agreed days Im supposed to have them, saying that she's busy and with them Where's best to go with this, I've never ever wanted to go down this route but it's become ridiculous, any advice is greatly appreciated, the legal aid question I can't get a definitive answer online, and the solicitor I have contacted straight out said it was £199 just to have a consultation
  16. I want to bet a large sum, for me anyway. I want to bet about £300 on England u19 to beat Israel tomorrow. Now I haven't placed a bet for about 5 years, and have never placed a bet online, nor registered with any betting sites. I have found out there are offers for new customers. From free bets to bet a tenner and get 20 in free bets. It got me thinking. If I joined multiple sites my stake could go a lot higher using the free bets. I haven't worked out the full amount yet. There is one site offering to double your odds. So my thinking was use as many free bets as possible then plonk whats left of the 300 on that site. I have a few concerns. 1 Some of the odds are not in fractions, are they easy to work out? 2 Can I use the free bet on the same bet, Does my free £10 bet have to go on a horse race or something. 3 Is it easy to get your money back? 4 Are there any other things to consider. I know there are terms and conditions on every site. But I dont have time to read pages and pages over multiple sites. Any advice would be welcome
  17. So.. what are your businesses doing - if anything - about their journey to net zero? 55% of companies state themselves, they are not transitioning fast enough.. Any obvious ideas we're not doing? Anything we're doing well? In my business we're trying to help clients get there, trying to get PSDS (Public Sector Decarb Scheme) applications in left, right and centre, but the funding has run out now.. Think we'll ever achieve it? Interested to know your thoughts!
  18. Couldn't find a topic relating to this, so hope this is the right place. My wife turns 40 next month, and I know she wants a pair of studded diamond earrings for "fancy". She's been dropping hints for a long time. However.... when it comes to Jewellery I'd normally head into Brum's famous Jewellery quarter, but due to Covid I don't really fancy going in. Does anyone know of and have used any quality and ethical online diamond retailers? I've never previously purchased something like this online. I don't mean to come across as a snob but I don't really like some of the high street retailers such as H Samuel etc, unless it's for something you'd wear day to day. I also think Tiffany's is overpriced for what it is, you're paying for a name. Got a budget of around £2k, so they're not going to be anything like a footballer might wear
  19. Not sure where to put this so please admin move to the correct place if necessary. Had a letter from the above saying that I was illegally parked in one of the carparks blah blah and have fined me with all sorts of threats if I do not pay. The only time we can think of ever using this car park was a few weeks ago where we pulled onto it to pick up a takeaway curry. We did not even park and were gone inside two minutes. Do they have any legal powers to take things further. My mate reckons just ignore it and they can do nothing and it’s all hot air but. just wondered if anyone had any dealings with these people before. Thanks in advance
  20. So after 18 years at y present company it looks like I have finally escaped...or very nearly anyway. I've never actually handed in my notice before and I'm not sure exactly when to do it. At present I've had the contract from the new company, I just need to sign it and return it, the only thing is that they haven't actually gave me a start date yet. The thing that is concerning me is that if I jump in and hand in my notice now then I don't want to end up jumping the gun and being without work for 3 or 4 weeks, on the flipside, I don't want to wait for the start date to come through only to find that I don't have enough time to work my notice period. My contract says that I have to give 12 weeks notice but I've been told that it is actually just 4 weeks that I need to give them. Do I do it now, Do I wait for the start date or can I just kind of provisionally tell them that I'm giving them my notice and we can work out the actual notice period at a later date? Also at what point is it acceptable to take a massive dump on my bosses desk?
  21. Hi all , I’m due a total knee replacement next week and expecting a tough few weeks - any of you been through it and any help or advice much appreciated

    Re-roofing

Anyone had their house re-roofed? I think ours needs doing. I've been googling costs to re-roof house and a 3 bed semi like ours seems to come out at £5-£6,000 which seems suspiciously cheap, I was thinking something like double that. Anyone know about scaffolding too? We've got a roofed over side passage down the side of the house that adjoins the neighbours roofed over side passage, and a single storey extension to the rear so for the life of me I can't see how they can get the scaffolding up. I can see that getting really expensive too.
  23. Wasn't sure whether to put this in the What Car Do You Drive thread or start a new one so feel free to move if required. I changed a couple of bulbs the weekend on my 1 series BMW and ever since I've had this error showing up I changed the bulbs back just in case but the error remains. Anyone else had this issue?

    Energy Bills

Lots happening in the country at the moment, I’m personally waiting to see what my new tariff looks like as I’ve been moved across from The Peoples Energy to British Gas. As they’d gone bump I cancelled my direct debit with The Peoples Energy to avoid my money going into a black hole. Now I’m getting grumpy emails about it, my payment isn’t even due until next month.
  25. After some help please guys. My mom has just got a letter through from HMRC saying she's been fined £600. She's investigated and they've told her she owes tax from 2016 and 2017, £799 per year! They were sending letters to her old address hence why she hasn't known about it and has now been fined. She was working at the time so her tax was paid through PAYE but apparently her employer used the wrong code. Is there anything she can do about this? She's retired now so can't afford to pay out £2,200! I guess fair enough if she owes the tax she owes the tax, but it all seems a bit unfair that none of it was her fault and she not only has to pay it all back but has to pay £600 on top of it
