  1. I think I read somewhere (maybe here) that Martinez plans as if he is going to be at the club for 50 years.
  2. ONeil was interested in Karl Henry just before he left/resigned/sacked* Delete on how you feel
  3. Its not Heskey's Fault he was the wrong man bought at the wrong time. A bit like when Taylor got Cascorinio instead of Teddy. The way Villa played as a fast breakout team wasnt going to suit his style of playing. I didnt want Heskey on the field especially when played out of position but I never felt cheated by him like perhaps Carew (who I loved as a player when he played). Heskey was offered a move from a Team flirting with relegation to a Top 6 team on very good money, managed by the man who started him on his Career. Villa looked to be going places at that point. He would have been mad not to take it. He hasnt rocked the boat and when he came in he has tried his best, just that isnt good enough anymore.
  4. He might have been a gold medal winner if he looked after himself better. Doubt it, he's still the British Record holder and world junior record holder 20 years later, very few people have jumped higher since that day Just cause later generations cant jump as high doenst mean He couldnt have been better if he didnt party all the time as you claimed. The Swimmers are the best example. Until the last Olympics they were seen as the party animals. They have got their act together and now win medals rather than plaudits for their drinking exploits.
  5. Read an Article where Gary Thompson describes the change Graham Taylor brought into the club and made the team more disciplined and he said that is exactly what is needed now. A clearout and some standards brought back into the club. Going down to the then 2nd Division didnt kill us back in 87. In fact the ten years that followed were most enjoyable - give or take a couple of years. Going down to the third didnt kill us in 69. In the end we came back stronger than ever. Yes it isnt a good thing but it isnt a total disaster. A chance to refocus get rid of the chaff and shit managers. Get an up and coming manager who would love to rebuild a major team and we could be okay. Financially hit yes but the as said before the youth players will have a chance to establish themselves. They still be Villa and I will still support them. If McKnob stays I will be watching from a distance.
  6. We are knackered - Last Season needing a draw in last game Mcliesh played defensively. Even near the end when they looked like they were going down he played one up front and put on a defender as a sub. He just doesnt know how to go for it. We need a result liek Chelsea away which was totally out of the blue.
  7. Oh and New York Cosomos - Same thing though they want a traditional brand.
  8. Umbro were bought by Nike so they could nick their best brands ie Brazil and Man United. I think Umbro nowadays are kept just for the England Kit so it has that Traditional feel and name instead of another Nike.
  9. His comment after the Arsenal Game about no one expecting us to go to the emirates and win shows exactly the make up of McCleish's mind. He is like a polar opposite of ONeil, where ONeil inspired the players to go out and perform above and beyond while McCleish puts the fear of the opposition into the players. I can't remember the morale of club and fans so low as this.
  10. I think Im at the stage where I would say get rid of him and even bring in Bruce till the end of the season. With McLeish in charge I cant see where the next point let alone 3 are coming from.
  11. Peter Withe as Venglos Assistant Manager.
  12. Merson cause Gregory replied to losing Yorke in great style. Collymore as it seemed Little's team was going to take that step up. Didier Six cause a French International coming to an English Team was unknown then and we went on to thump Man U 3-0 in his first game. Best leave that one there. Funnily enough Big John Fash. It seemed a good match for the team that had won the League Cup in 94. Some one big and horrible to provide a bit of a bite to what had been a good football team.
  13. I seem to remember there was a story that Bannan was warned about his drinking habits while on loan at Blackpool by Holloway. I agree with the comment that they are paid enough to lay of the sauce during the season. When I used to compete (different sport) I used to have to go teetotal for periods of the year.
  14. I think he was on the Board at SHA not the owner during the sixties and when Villa was being re-financed by Pat Mathews he saw a chance to play a bigger part in a football club and hence establish his ego. I have no doubt he wanted the best for Villa but didnt have the knowledge or the guts to go for it at times. Several times built a good platform to build upon but would take that extra gamble to push us into the top 5 teams. His fingers were badly burned the one time he thought he was doing it when he bought Stanley Collymore. I would say that 90% of us also saw that as a sign of our intention to gate crash the top 3 (We had just finished 4th I think). Ellis problem was that he would recognise when the club was in bad shape (pre 2002) and panic into rebuilding a team BUT he didnt seem to believe in continuing. Ellis was also revolution of teams rather than evolution. I still like Lerner but I think he badly needs to update his management staff!
  15. Liked the one we had with a blue strip across the middle when Collymore signed
  16. Hated That Kit! Has everybody forgotten this? Clicky here
  17. Also that Bent would leave us in a heartbeat anyway so selling Gabby first would be senseless
  18. So you'd prefer a man who's kept Wigan up by the skin of his teeth, to a man who took Boro to 7th, won the League Cup, got to a European final and won a Dutch club their first ever title? Can I ask why? Cause I dont like the bloke and think he is a tosser. He spent a lot of money at Boro and never was higher than Villa from what I remember.
  19. Why, did you hear him coughing up a greenie? Nah that would be me at the moment though I did stand next to the guy in Barcelona Duty Free Unfortunatly wife asked me if he was Guillet which made him laugh at me cringing. I was told the club had been speaking to him while they monitored Houllier's health.
  20. This It depresses me that we have someone like Houllier coming in. but I stand to be proven wrong. I was wrong about Gregory who I thought would be a disaster but has been one of my favourite managers of the past few. I was wrong about ONeil - I feel he flattered. Spent a lot of money to get us back to a position we regulary in a few seasons before. People forget Taylor MK II took us a backwards by a long way in one season before O'Dearme came along.
  21. Double negative there : So your saying someone knows something!
  22. Talking of Failures - Didnt Ron Saunders fail at Man City and Norwich before he joined the Villa. Old Big Ed was interested in the Job but Ellis didnt want to be over shadowed
