  1. I don't get the dislike for SJM. I think he is up there as one of our better players. He has had his off days, as most players do, but an element of that is down to the role is he was being asked to undertake at times. I am excited to see what he can do this season with the freedom that Kamara will give him and the better options - a settled Coutinho, second season Emi and a fit Bailey - in front of/alongside him. Equally, i do think he has better captain characteristics than Mings. And captaincy does not guarantee game time. E.g. Henderson does not start every game for Liverpool and Citeh rotated the arm band last season.
  2. Because he is injured a lot and, when he is fit, he is lightweight and inconsistent offensively. We have seen a few moments of brilliance but that is not going to get us where we need to get to.
  3. The most popular current links, that also make sense, given the speculation as to where we would want to add, are Sangare or Gallagher and de Tomas. If we were to bring one of those midfielders in and de Tomas, would people (1) be happy and (2) think we should be aiming for top 8 with the squad that would give us?
  4. Agreed but you can't knock them for asking - tbf to them the kid has probably put £10k on his salary since the end of the season with his Euro's performance. The kid hasn't said anything yet as far as I can see (lots of media speculation) he's just not re-committed. We're clearly not privy to what is being asked for (salary or playing time) but I doubt there are many PL teams that are better positioned at the minute to give him the optimal combination of these two things. The Big 6 might be able to pay more BUT he won't see game time and those that might give him more "guaranteed" game time may do so in a struggling environment and will probably be less able to pay wages we can. Hopefully, he'll realise that the grass is not always greener over the coming months. Equally, whilst he looks strong on the ball - glides in possession and gets in to good areas - from what I have seen he has a lot of development to be done off the ball/out of possession. He is a long way from the finished article and the playing time and monetary demands speculated in the press.
  5. From what I have seen he is an "8" and not a "10". He moves well with the ball at his feet and is powerful for his age but he also looks off it/a bit sluggish defensively - a key area that he is going to need to get better at if he is going to make it at the top level. He looks like he has potential but is way off the level that, say, JJ is achieving at the minute (I accept that he is a couple of years older) and he still has a lot of development left as well to really be the player we all hope he can become. I can't see anybody at PL or big club level paying £20m for him but I also can't see anybody giving him the money he appears to be asking for or the guarantees over playing time that he wants. He must have looked around that England U-19s side and noticed that he had more PL game time than any of them. I don't blame him for pushing for as much of a commitment as he can get but I can't see a better home for him at the minute than Aston Villa. Let's hope that common sense kicks in and he signs a new contract and knuckles down to follow in jj's footsteps.
  6. I would be more focused on upgrading Bertie, so we have four decent options for the inside forward roles, especially now we are moving to five subs. When he's on he's fantastic but he's far too inconsistent. Buendia, Coutinho, Bailey + 1 with Ollie, Ings, Cam and Davis (I would keep him because I think he gives an option we don't have and could be used more frequently with five subs) gives us decent options to flex/rotate/sub. I wouldn't be averse to another striker though as getting Cam back out on loan where he would play 30+ games wouldn't hurt at all. I am not sure many would be an upgrade on Watkins (who I really like and think he is harshly judged) and Ings but would allow us to rotate and flex our play.
  7. Agreed. Very similar to Klopp when he arrived at Liverpool. He knew what he wanted - Keita, VVD and Allison - and was prepared to wait.
  8. Sounds like he should change his name to Carney Churchrichmaker!!
  9. Can he play in a double pivot with Kamara??
  10. If I remember correctly, Spurs did a terrible job of spending the Bale money. They just got lucky as the big 6 wasn't formed/established at that point and Harry Kane came through, effectively for nothing. Liverpool, however, did spend the PC money very well and strategically.
  11. They've got a big hole now that Gallagher has gone back to Chelski. Just as Brighton have when Bissouma moves on. I think they'll both struggle to plug these gaps unless they hit very lucky.
  12. Probably something really stupid like we'll make all of our signings next Wednesday!
  13. I thought it was just because they have to cover the cost of the petrol to get the player to the buying club??
  14. Be nice if he did .... With an £8m release clause!
  15. Let's hope, if you are correct, that Lange's rabbit works a bit better than Ings has.
  16. I don't recall many dogshit comments but I think a lot, including me I will admit, thought he would probably benefit from a decent loan at a top championship side.
  17. I agree BUT they've probably made it worse by being so proactive at the outset! I think people saw the four signings and would just carry on with that pace until pre-season! Not possible for anybody other than maybe Citeh and Plop??
  18. As has often been said, playing an unsuitable role. I believe that, if the team is set up properly/geared up to suit SJM i.e. we have a strong DCM, we will see a different, and much more consistently good, SJM.
  19. I think he would be much more involved 1. Having shown what he is capable of e on loan; and 2. With five subs allowing much more flexibility in substitution s or changing approach and KD offers something very different to Watkins and Ings.
  20. I think this is right. 1. I'm not sure we would or should be signing players for this amount at present (budget/ffp); 2. An £80m player will typically want CL which we can't offer; and 3. We have other priorities. I believe that Ollie is something like the 6th highest scorer in the PL over the last two seasons ... arguably punching above our weight!? He is better than many on here give him credit for, imho, and with a good pre-season should be back firing next year. He is not Kane but very very few are ... that's why Citeh were looking to pay £100m+ for him last year. I think, if we do sign a striker, it'll be for rotation etc.. Five subs means plenty of options to change your attack during games and the ability to rotate more/start others as those rested can always get 30 mins. Of the realistic names seen, I am not sure any looks better than Ollie??
  21. Would you view Soucek as suitable? Looks like West Ham are getting JWP and therefore there may be quite a bit around the Soucek rumours?
  22. Wouldn't be the end of the world (for me) if he stayed, especially if Cam goes out again. Especially now you have 5 subs. Davis offers something different and we have seen his use as a foil at Forest. He can be unplayable. I know many will disagree though.
  23. That's not the definition of worth. It might be the definition of market/realisable value because the market has determined the price, but whether he is worth that are not can be subjective.
  24. I think he has suffered from not being used in the correct way. The only time he has played at "8" (from memory) was with Ash Young as the other "8" and I can't remember who was the "6". Every other time he was brought on as a "10"! We need to see him as an "8" (box to box role) with a proper DCM behind and SJM/JJ alongside. A couple of games like that and we can see whether he can replicate his u-19s form in the PL.
  25. I don't know the specifics of the deal but I'd be very surprised if it was drafted that way. Take Dougie, for example - I don't think we could have sold him in the buyback period without first asking Citeh and, if there was a profit, they would have exercised their option first and then sold on presumably.
