  1. What Ollie was up to on Tuesday evening....in the crowd (of 384) at Gloucester for Truro v Torquay, supporting former colleagues from youth football days...says a lot about Ollie's humility and grounded nature https://www.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=435955482129846&id=100071461943183&post_id=100071461943183_435955482129846&rdid=S1N92Ry5NLTZNTSf
  2. 8 years ago this month Ollie scored his first league goal. Since then he has started 315 league games, an average of 39 league games started per season. Astonishing stats. yep, that average is higher than the maximum possible in the 4 seasons in the Premier League. He started 49 league games in his last season with Brentford (46 league games plus 2 play off semi-finals and the Wembley final, missing only 8 minutes all season) and 48 in his last season with Exeter (45 league games plus, again, the 3 play off games)
  3. rich praise for Chrisene from BBC commentator and pundit for his energy and for bombing up and. down the wing (though the pundit was Danny Murphy....)
  4. Indeed. Though he has also shown some decent footwork some time ago...
  5. He does have quite a record of scoring right foot, left foot, header. His last season at Brentford was 11 right foot, 8 headers and 7 left foot. And of course the hat trick v Liverpool was the 'perfect hat trick' of right foot , left foot ,header. I'm not sure what the stats are this season. Yesterday, as well as the goal and 3 assists (including for McGinn's) there was also his headed clearance off Villa's goal line......!
  6. Brief update. Continues to be automatic first choice at Exeter in League One; plays every league game; decent performances for someone now just turned 22. Not yet ready to play in a side challenging for Champions league places. Decent at shot stopping and claiming crosses. Distribution was a weakness but has significantly improved in the 20+ games playing an Emery style 'play out from the back' but with room for more improvement . Please don't recall him this January. At this stage of his career he needs to play regularly and keep playing. He's at a club where he's liked, gets to play and where his confidence and performance levels are improving. The long term future...too early to tell
  7. the Blackburn manager and their club write up use the words 'back-up' and 'cover', so that's where Blackburn fans probably got that from https://www.rovers.co.uk/news/2024/january/07/boss-delighted-with-double-deal/ Add in the fact that the current first choice left back has played 27 times for them this season (and I think provided a pinpoint cross for a goal yesterday) But this will probably suit a player returning from a lengthy injury - not having to play every minute and taking time to get back to his best (see eg Jacob Ramsey) And Useless makes an excellent point. If Ben can't get a start at left back, he can do an excellent job elsewhere - and I too share the view that his best position, and long term future, is probably in centre midfield.
  8. have to smile, hearing someone say this week that both Bailey and Zaniolo were better off the bench, so really difficult to say which one should start. So Emery's solved that conundrum!
  9. they did an analysis on MOTD2 (still available on iplayer). Everyone thought it was a clear penalty for the push on Watkins.
  10. Ollie's career hat trick tally - 5. This is the first in front of his own fans. Away hat tricks in Wales, England and Scotland for his 3 clubs - at Newport for Exeter, at Barnsley for Brentford and at Hibs for Villa. At home v Liverpool was in front of an empty Villa Park due to Covid. At last gets one in front of home fans. I think the Liverpool one is the only 'perfect' hat trick (right foot, left foot, header)
  11. Indeed. But the post I quoted (not from you) contained a lecture about getting the facts right but said that Ollie had not scored a single goal in an 11 match run. That post stated that facts were facts and asked whether we had missed something when saying Ollie hadn't scored a solitary goal in an 11 match run.
  12. Didn't Ollie score in the final game of last season against Brighton? A goal that clinched European football for Villa?
  13. I'm glad I'm not the only one wondering this. Injured in mid season (January?) It was serious but I expected to see him either loaned out again or playing for the U21s . Would appreciate an update if anyone finds out.
  14. Strange stat ..Ollie Watkins fourth senior hat-trick...but none of them scored in front of his home fans. Away at Newport for Exeter, away at Barnsley for Brentford, away at Hibs for Villa. The only one at home was the 7-2 game v Liverpool at Villa Park, with no fans due to covid!
  15. Two league games, two clean sheets. And an important 1 on 1 save in the dying minutes from the opposing striker clean through on goal. For Villa fans wanting a look, on Tuesday on Sky - Portsmouth v Exeter.
  16. Sinisalo keeps a clean sheet in an opening day 3-0 away win. He has the number 1 shirt and is currently obviously first choice (with a 30 something experienced pro as back up/challenge) (In reply to Skarroki the swapping of Sinsalo and Blackman as Exeter/Burton keepers is down to money. Exeter were desperate for a quality keeper last season and paid big bucks (in Exeter's terms) for a season of Blackman. The new manager has explicitly said that he wants to spend that money elsewhere in the squad. Exeter sees itself as an 'opportunity' club where players can build (or re-build) their careers. This is Sinisalo's opportunity and everyone hopes he takes it with both hands. Also I expect Sinisalo to be busy in a battle against relegation for precisely the reasons Skarroki mentions. Half the team gone including the best players. Replacements made up of inexperienced Premier loanees, signings from non league and a couple of midfielders who haven't played for 18 months because of injury. Will depend on how well this recruitment works out. Six debutants starting yesterday and a 7th on after 15 minutes. Though I'd settle for the table as it now stands...)
  17. Exeter needed another keeper. Currently there's an experienced keeper who fans think is a decent reserve but doubtful about as first choice. There's also a very promising 18 year old who has gone out on loan to Weston super Mare. So a season long loan of VS is ideal. Whether he plays most games will depend (I guess) on performances. One snag is international breaks. Exeter games continue during them so even if VS is first choice he'll be replaced a total of five times during the international breaks and will then have to fight for his league place again.
  18. It's a bit odd. You know when a player signs or is touted there's a highlights reel that makes virtually every new signing look world class.? In this lad's case somebody (a Burton fan?) went to the trouble of making a lowlights reel showing his mistakes/goals conceded last season , of which there were quite a few , including some howlers. But on Villa's website he's listed as the third keeper behind Martinez and Olsen, following Steer's departure. And of course was on the bench in the Premiership a lot late last season. If that lowlights reel had been a fair representation he'd not be within a million miles of Villa's first team. I've not seen anything other than the lowlights reel. So I'm hoping he's a class keeper who went through a spell of poor form. And that form is temporary but class is permanent....
  19. Rumours strengthening that a season long loan deal to Exeter is about to be announced. As said earlier on this thread Exeter in need of a first choice keeper. The last loan keeper we had at Exeter was Cameron Dawson of Sheffield Wednesday whose career has been transformed for the better. If it turns out as good as that it will be a great move
  20. Ollie has posted a picture of a phone call with the message 'Europe is calling' which might explain the celebration. First goal since the birth of the second child. Mind you,I reckon his older child (aged 18 months?) might have been able to score that one!
  21. It was a fantastic piece of defending. Without it Daka has a tap in 3 yards out. Mings rushed to congratulate Ollie for it; Ollie had been quicker to react to the danger than any of the defenders. Without that defending its two points dropped. Awful live decision; Ollie's got in front of Daka, Daka fouled Ollie and the ball bounced up off Daka's hand. This was a classic referee's 'I've sent off one of the home players; the home crowd are on my back, I've not seen what happened, so I'll give this decision the home team's way' decisions.
  22. Many have said (rightly IMHO) that Ollie is a confidence player, doing so much better when confidence is high. So what can a manager do to instil confidence in Ollie? Demonstrating by actions, not words, that he believes in and relies on him? Here's 5 of Ollie's best and worst career spells under 4 different managers. Emery - sells Ings , deciding to rely on Ollie as sole senior striker. Outcome - record breaking 5 goals in 5 successive games Smith - reunited with Ollie for £30m, sole senior centre forward. Outcome - 14 goals in first Premier League season Frank - makes Ollie sole senior striker (after 20 goal top scorer forces move to Premier League leaving Brentford) having to convert Ollie to a centre forward. Outcome - 26 Championship goals that season Compare Gerrard - drops Ollie for first game of this season, despite him doing OK-ish in pre season. Outcome - Ollie gets 1 in 11. Gerrard gets sacked. Smith - Ings signed for £30m. Confusion - are they to play together or compete for the same spot? Outcome - Ollie gets 2 goals in 9 Villa games. Smith gets sacked.
  23. Goalscoring form this season;- under Gerrard - 1 in 11 since Gerrard - 7 in 12
