  1. The hilarious bit of this is when his redesign is a lot worse than the 'new' crest he's critiquing. Yes I dislike the drop shadow and colours, but the redesign in that thread is pants, and it's a lesson in how these things aren't as easy as people think. It's easy to critique, but when you get those ingredients it's difficult to actually nail it.
  2. That's what I've been saying all along. The design isn't bad at all. The colours and the drop shadow are the issue. It looks nice with a good lion that actually stands out with some contrast.
  3. The one on the right would do. The lion needs pushing up a tad though. I wonder if it would be too much claret on the shirt though.

Yeah but come on McGinn doesn't tell the manager to make subs. Not unless someone was injured. That's not his role—Emery's pretty renowned for his interest in managing all the fine points in a game as we all know.

There's no universe where John McGinn told Emery to take off Duran.
  6. This is more or less what I was doing yesterday. But I wasn't bothered about the text position. TBH these are all nicer. I think they're decent. Any of these would be good. And sure I prefer the text on top.
  7. Eh. If they think the Lerner v1/2 is better then they're not very good designers! (except for the drop shadow—if their objection is because of that then that's a different matter). And yes that is my opinion!
  8. Talk about making over-generalisations based on social media.
  9. I get it with Leeds when they had that awful option, but this is just silly (imo of course). Just look at those Cambodia/Phillipines photos above. For 15+ years we've been branded with that yellow/blue crest. Although I hate those colours, there is logic in evolving the brand rather than a complete reboot. What's the sense in a reboot? And there is no way the v2 Lerner crest is better than the new version. No designer on the planet is going to agree with that (except for maybe not liking the drop shadow). If Heck and the club have decided to evolve the Lerner crest then there is sense behind that, and minorities of fans not preferring it on club message boards isn't really relevant. Loads of brand evolutions take time for people to get used to. I live/have been living in Madrid and everyone hated the new Atletico crest to begin with, now the fans like it.

We can't just have one striker. That would be madness.
  11. 1) Websites and online overreactions are a poor way of judging this. 'It's not what the fans wanted' is very Brexit. Everyone has their own fantasy version of 'something' perfect in their head, but designing things doesn't work like that. 2) One guy on Twitter? I did some professional work in the branding field and it's nothing like the disaster people are making it out to be. (Emphasis on 'some' admittedly)
  12. 'What the fans wanted'. This is Brexit all over again!
  13. Apples and oranges. I love the star—we deserve it above the badge/shield/blob whatever it is. That's not what I was talking about though.

It would imply we're getting a replacement at least.
  15. It's irrelevant. And really they surpassed us in 1998. A European Cup and top division win in the 80s is less relevant than the last twenty odd years of premier league and European history. It's not about assertiveness. I see it as logical. And it doesn't matter if 'most of' the fans like the round badge—no design thing anywhere should be done by committee/public vote.
  16. It's really not. You're right that whatever we do with a shield it'll look similar to Boro in monochrome, which is a shame, but we're a much bigger team than Boro. Less so in colour, but yes it is definitely similar. But more significantly Chelsea are a much bigger team than us, and one we're trying to compete with on a global market.
  17. It's night and day. The new badge is clearly an evolution of the two Lerner badges, but it's so much better than both. That 1874 is nowhere near as egregious as 'Prepared'. As I said in the previous post, I wonder if it is there to balance the star. It's the same colour for a reason. It also makes it a trio of white features—the star, the year, the border. And design elements work better in odd numbers.
  18. That's what I wholeheartedly disagree with. There's nothing it doesn't do better or the same.
  19. I wholeheartedly and completely disagree. That badge is so lifeless.
  20. It doesn't matter if the 1874 gets lost a little. It's not that important. Plenty of badges have elements that get a little lost. The main things are prominent—the lion and the name. Giving the lion the pride (ahem) of place is sensible from a design point of view. The balance between lettering and lion and empty space is awful in the original (or v2) Lerner badge. The text is too big compared to the lion. The two elements are competing for focus in the heirarchy of the design. There is no question that the heirarchy is better in the new one. Putting the lion on top isn't an issue either. The Lerner badge is so basic and has no gravitas. The new one actually has a touch of that, genuine gravitas. My first reaction to the new badge was 'what the ****!', but I can see what they're doing. The backlash is such a shame imo (though I admit I have my version with the good lion in my head now). How they can go back to the shittier lion I have no idea. I played about with it briefly. I actually think the 1874 is too big in the new design. I think getting the colours working is tough. The claret lion is a bit dull for me. This was just a quick go though.
  21. Not at all. That's obviously absurd, and the photo is overexposed in the lighter parts too. The layout of the new one is absolutely fine. It's good in fact (as I say I am totally owning the fact I have worked 'a little' in design here—I actually freelanced but I wasn't really a 'pro' pro). My only problems with it are the colours and the shittier lion. I don't like the light blue light yellow combo at all, but if those colours are tweaked and at least one of them is made darker and more saturated, the design works. The Lerner badge is nowhere near as good as the new one. And tweaking and honing and improving a design is a complicated process. Sure people have magic ideas for amazing magic badges in their heads, but in reality it's actually quite difficult. And like it or not the Lerner badge has been our identity for 15 years. Improving on it (vastly improving on it) makes sense from a commercial point of view.
  22. I think you're all mad and have shit taste!
  23. From the few people I've shown (in my family OK, yeh) the consensus was the new badge is best, but the lion needs to be the new lion.
  24. Me and you Jimmy! It needs a better lion and no shadow, but it's actually pretty good.
