  1. He's not kicking up a fuss, but some were asking if he'd have grounds to do so, he doesn't. It is very strange though, that the club have trademarked the design with the extra detailing, because I'm not sure they needed to. They already had all of the components that make it up trademarked and I don't think it's enough of a deviation to really warrant the extra trademark, but full disclosure I'm no expert on trademarking. Personally, I think the detailing causes as many issues as it solves. It looks really nice in the render, and it looks slightly better than the non-detailed version at large-ish sizes, but at smaller sizes it looks a real mess. There are still fundamental issues with the design, no amount of extra detail is going to fix that. I'm not really sure what is going on now, @OutByEaster? said the club is speaking with the FA and I've no idea how long that process will last or has been going on, but I'd be surprised if the detailed version is what has resulted from those talks. Possibly they've seen the render and thought it looks nice, thought maybe we can use that somewhere, or someone else might use it somewhere, lets trademark it just in case. The whole situation is a complete mess and the communication on the matter has been beyond poor, it might all be worth it if we got a great crest/brand at the end of it, but from what I've seen so far that's going to be far from the case.
  2. The detailing was already trademarked by the club long ago, all he did was put it over another design that was also already trademarked by the club, and then did a fancy render, so I don't think legally he'd be able to kick up much of a fuss.
  3. I'd critique this, but how can you critique perfection?
  4. Farewell sweet prince. Football is supposed to fun and what's more fun than having no idea what's about to happen? Bertie was certainly never predictable and for that I'm grateful. In a world of rigid systems and production lines of disciplined players it was nice to have someone as mad as a bag of frogs. Go well Bertie.
  5. As you've mentioned it's something that has happened on kits and I'd imagine some clubs with more modern crests (like the Juventus redesign) do have variations for different sizes or are at least more optimised to be used in different ways. I think part of the problem is that the Premier League itself is a brand, and all of the crests of the teams in it are part of that brand, so it's not like each club has total control of how their crest is used in every single piece of branding, they can put out guidelines for how their crests should be used, but not everyone that uses them will follow it to the letter, managing the different guidelines of 20 different brands would be difficult and from a legal standpoint they are just guidelines, you could maybe stop someone from using your crest altogether but that only usually happens in extreme examples. Some of these crests are very old, or based on very old designs, it's difficult to modernise something so old to work on new media, whoever designed the original Burnley Crest wasn't thinking 'I need to make sure this scales down well for a profile picture on X in 80 years time'. Finally, people (generally) do not like change, plenty fear it and crave the familiar. Even the Juventus redesign upset some people on here, that's a club from another country with no affiliation to us whatsoever, so you do have to be very careful in how you update things, incremental changes are more likely to be accepted.
  6. Your design is nice, and having the star above is much better from a design point of view, for the sake of symmetry if nothing else. However, we don't know 100% what all of the restrictions in place are. Can we change the colours? Can we change the lion? I try to design to what I think they may be, but it is all guesswork. The leaked crest suggests to me there are a lot more restrictions in place than I thought. If there were no restrictions, no surveys to work to etc. I'd drop the star and 1874 as well, as you say it can be used elsewhere as part of the brand
  7. To sort of visually back up what @ThunderPower_14 is saying here. The Premier League will have guidelines on how much space a crest can take up on a kit, I don't know specifically what they are, but I'd imagine the area allowed is square in shape as this accommodates most logo/crest shapes. So in the graphic below if you imagine the grey squares are the amount of space your crest is allowed to use, and see how much smaller you have to make your crest to accommodate a star above it, especially at smaller sizes. You can also see that Forest can get away with losing the vertical space because they have a simple easily definable shape, even at small sizes, having two stars rather than one helps as well. Detailed crests cannot afford to lose the vertical space as they are already fighting a battle at smaller sizes and need all the space they can get. This is also likely why you don't get very tall or very wide crests.
  8. Got tired of making badge designs so thought I'd have an early look at a kit design for next year using an Adidas template and the leaked badge design... Think I might try a few different patterns... and maybe try something a little less obvious with the claret and blue to try and make it less 'West Hammy'
  9. Interesting decisions ahead for Liverpool you'd think. Alonso is the obvious name, though I'm not sure how much his and Klopp's styles overlap. I'd expect there'd be a bit of player turnover/rebuild time for the next couple of seasons, it seems strange to say tear it up and start again, but that's often the best way when somebody steps down after so long. How much extra is Klopp getting out of these players? He signed pretty much everyone there at this point and has close ties to all of them, Will a new manager be able to get the same out of them? Likely not, and that's why it's not just a case of carry-on playing the same way and everything will be fine. Alonso has done very well at Leverkusen but it's a big jump to one of the European heavyweights and the expectations that come with it, I'm sure in an ideal world Alonso would like a few more seasons in management before jumping into the big seat. It's a tough gig for whoever takes over, much like Emery taking over from Wenger. Klopp is an outstanding manager, and although he's said and done some daft things at times, he has my respect for the job he's done. Like others, I hope this is nothing health-related and good luck to him whatever he does next.
  10. No problem, I'm a bit sleep-deprived at the moment, apologies for getting the wrong end of the stick on that one.
  11. I do, but I'm not as successful as you and your comedy career obviously...
  12. Made it look a bit less pukey and stood it up a bit straighter. Something is still not right though, think the proportions are maybe a little too human... I'll probably leave it there, got work to do.
  13. I got a bit bored waiting for the announcement, so I thought I'd have a play at improving the lion, trying to get a bit more movement and make it more regal... Moral of the story? Lions that scale down are really difficult to get right...
  14. I'm not sure it's luck, they invested in a new stadium and took the hit while it was being built, but because of it they have now doubled their income on matchdays and are near if not the top in terms of earnings for each game. They've steadily sold players for big money, but stayed at a similar level, so recruitment, although mixed and occasionally wasteful, has been generally successful over a long period of time. In theory, they have loads of room in terms of FFP from the Kane sale and large income streams. The only things they've done wrong is not to win anything, and to keep changing managers at a high cost. I'd say the only luck involved was being able to use Wembley while their new stadium was built, but that's more just taking advantage of their location. Essentially, they just took advantage when they got in the top 4 and the extra money it brings in. I hope we can too should we be there at the end of the season.
  15. The issue would be that anyone could purchase a license for that same lion from Shutterstock and do whatever they wanted with it, and we'd have absolutely no leg to stand on from a legal point of view. With a brand as big as ours you want protection over your image/brand. Having a lion custom made and copywrited protects you from having your lion plastered all over porn sites, or another club hijacking our popularity by adopting the same lion etc.
  16. Just calling it as I see it, I do not need to twist anything, but you're most welcome to ignore my opinion.
  17. The problem is it is in the second less visible tweet. He knows (or should know as somebody with so much experience in the industry) that this is what has happened, there's no 'could' about it, but he has still tried to mislead people in his first and most visible tweet for some reason (most likely clout/interactions). It's just irresponsible. Misinformation is a global problem at the moment and 'experts' like Lee using their knowledge to manufacture outrage is not very helpful to anyone.
  18. Looking at the people who contributed these vectors and the other things they have contributed, Lee has found a giant nothing burger. This is not where our lions came from. An internationally renowned company like Dragon Rouge isn't going to just grab a vector lion off Shutterstock. Thought someone with his experience would know better and maybe dig a little deeper.
  19. Depends on the brief, if you're not allowed to change the colours, lion or star (which I think might of been the case, I mean why else would you keep them?!) then this design wouldn't fill the criteria and nor would pretty much all the fan made designs we see/have made.
  20. Mate, you are entitled to your opinion, I'm not going to be offended by it. But I am also entitled to mine. I think it's good, but far from perfect and I will always strive for better.
  21. Though I agree with most of his critique, I'm not overly impressed with the crest options he's produced, better than we're getting for sure, but his designs have their own issues. Again a lot depends on the brief, evolution or redesign, the difference in restrictions make a huge difference.
  22. I've explained previously from a design perspective that a round badge isn't optimal for a few reasons. But, from a fan point of view, I understand it's a far more complex matter, as it ties in with a short period of incredible success for the club. However, some seem to forget we bobbed around not doing much after that and also got relegated with it, so it's not like it only brought success. It was rightly changed in the early 90's as it looked very dated by then, very 80's, and in the 90's everyone seemed very keen to distance themselves from the eighties like it was some kind of bad fever dream. Nowadays, with the retro appeal and a relative starving of success, it's not all that surprising so many are pining for a round crest.
  23. Just to add this I previously posted the below in reply to someone: In addition to the above, there may be supplier contracts that can be allowed to run their course rather than straight cancelled which would likely involve cost as well. Brand evolutions can be good, and environmentally better as there is less waste, but they depend on the current brand not having glaring issues such as ours.
  24. I struggle a little with this as well, but I'd guess our owners have a budget of what they are willing to spend on us year on year, like any of the other businesses they run, and we have to be at least near that budget. They may have near-infinite wealth between them, but they don't afford us an infinite budget, which is perfectly reasonable.
