These type of signings are the future of our club. Get them in whilst they are relatively cheap. Develop them at a high standard. Make sure they are playing to the Aston Villa way of playing, so they are more 'first team ready'. However, as a business we either: get a player cheaper than they would be at 23, or Sell on and get the FFP benefit. In the case of FFP, I believe 'youth development' is excluded from FFP calculation of spend. So it could be that these purchases aren't in our costs, but the sales in a few years give huge benefit. Running the youth team for profit, with the hope of them making the grade, could buy us a lot of FFP scope in years to come.

I love football fans. Fin Azaz - only played in the Championship, 23 years old, capped once at U21 level for Ireland. €1.5m valuation on TransferMarkt (I know, but it is an indication).Ridiculous (say some) that we've only sold for £2.5m - worth way more than that. (I have seen someone say £15m on twitter!). Cam Archer - playing in the premier league; turned 22 a couple of weeks ago. 11 games and 6 goals for England U21 - won the Euros at that level last summer; €18m valuation on TransferMarkt - probably won't get £10m for him if he comes back (again according to some). Never change.

We were able to 'bank' the £9m (or £18m) as pure profit for FFP. We bring him back for £7m, (say) and amortise over 5 years. Buys us headroom for 5 years. Often these deals are dictated by the accountants as being the best option based on the accounting treatment. I say this as an accountant. I also suspect we've gambled that he will score goals (3 so far?) and enhance his reputation. They have been dross, but the feeling is that Cam, having just turned 22, is doing well given his first season in the league. He isn't a lone striker but he will score goals at this level.

I would rate our chances of selling Traore as zero. Injured. Barely played. Likely to spend a month at AFCON. Out of contract in June. Might as well de-register him if we need a slot in the squad.

These are the steps we need to go through if we are to become a top club in Europe. We were (just about) seeded in the draw as we picked up the PL co-efficient points, otherwise we have no European ranking points so are ranked bottom, along with sides from the Faroe Islands, Gibraltar, Malta and Scotland. This is what has also hurt Newcastle in the CL, and put them in "the group of Death" - they just aren't seeded as they have no historical points. It's how UEFA try and protect the 'big boys'. We are building our points base; just slowly. It will all help in the end, as you rightly say.

Oh - in my view we need to upgrade Cash and he become a squad player (unless Unai thinks he can step up again). I was just amazed he let Young go at all. I was so wrong!
-
Agree - I had exactly the same reaction in the summer; more so when we didn't sign a replacement.

Ollie is back. Need him to go on one of those scoring runs. I believed - into my fantasy league team this week after a goal!

He's genuinely giving me McGrath vibes. Not at that level of course - no mortal can ever be - but he just does everything so well without a fuss. As others have said - not the quickest, tallest or strongest, but good in all those areas, and reads the game well. The pundits rave about Lewis Dunk (who I rate), and often show his last ditch tackles. But he's making those tackles because he didn't stop the danger earlier. Konsa usually does. I know which I prefer.

1. Injury 2. Being at a club built entirely around you scoring goals. He kept us up, the team was built to serve him. Liverpool don't do that unless you're Salah quality.

Villa player assessments you got humiliatingly wrong ...

I thought Gary Gardner was going to be as good as Gerrard. I thought Micah Richards was a great signing. And many much worse I have worked hard to forget. -
Leave him, as long as he's playing. He needs a full season; he needs goals.

Has it finally clicked for this kid. I know its "only" League 2, but he has only just turned 20. He's scoring goals, so will no doubt get a proper run of games.

I know people like a last minute signing - but we don't do that now. In my view, this is because we are now a well run club. This should make us happy. I agree with those saying it's been a great window. But the outgoings (hopefully with another 3 being announced today) are as impressive as the incomings. I have no idea whether FFP was becoming an issue - but it can't be now! We've had 2 serious injuries - and brought in Zaniolo and Lenglet to cover on loan. We're all seemingly worried about about the reserve GK; he's played 2 and half games this season and conceded once. Maybe he's improved too. (I know the opposition). With RB - I think he wants to play a CB there often - we have those in Chambers and Konsa. And the striker - I think Duran is ready. It's a big drop off, but he has to play to improve, and who could we realistically get?
-
And that player is now apparently for sale - and Everton are interested in him.
-
Agreed. Unai has clearly decided Ramsey (A) will get limited minutes this season, and it's in everyone's best interest to let him go, play and develop. He's clearly well thought of - hence the buy back - so the risk is low, and we've got £14m if he doesn't actually make it to the level we'll be at. Fans seem to forget that these young players need a career - not just a few minutes in the cup. If we actually take care of these young players, we are more likely to attract the next generation, as the parents will recognise that we are supportive of their careers overall.

Shit. I was hoping they wouldn't do a medical. Never mind.

Sorry - as much as Olsen worries me - you just can't predict that He is an Aston Villa player. If the manager trusts him, he must have his reasons. I would be surprised if he plays in more than 10 games this season - he's played in 1, and kept a clean sheet. I suspect he'll play next Thursday - hopefully 2 for 2! Any keeper we could realistically sign would leave us praying that Emi doesn't get injured.
-
A lot of people saying we need a replacement for Olsen. Personally, I agree. But....I don't think the clubs does. We have good young keepers coming through, and are loaning them out to get them experience. Olsen has worried us all - but, Unai has improved players from the minute he walked through the door. Why can he not improve Olsen? A reserve keeper is a unique role, and whilst the players seemed (past tense) a bit nervous with Olsen in goal, is that still the case, and would a realistic new 2nd choice be any better? We have spent a bloody fortune on keepers over the last 6 years; maybe what we've got is good enough for a handful of games?
-
No. The priority is that they develop first team players. But the chances of us repeating the Man Utd "Class of 92" is just about zero. If we can get 1 a year on average into the first team squad we're doing well. Secondly, if they don't make it into a (hopefully) top 6 premier league squad - we maximise our return for the good of the club. We aren't a charity, so the cost of the academy needs to be covered. And in this regard, we should ensure we take our duty of care seriously. There is lots of noise about what happens when players don't make it - well, we'll put them out on loan appropriately so they have the best chance of developing to their potential, and by doing so we maximise our return. And by doing this, we make our academy more attractive, because we do things right by the player. As a result - the whole premise of the academy is to make sure the players develop to their maximum potential. Some play for us for a long time, others move on and have good careers, and some leave football altogether. This has never changed, it's just that FFP brings it into focus. Don't forget, there are 100s of players at lower age groups who we are trying to develop - it isn't just about the U23s taking the last massive step.

100% And by selling all 3 (with buy backs) we've generated close to £40m - or the Diaby signing. And if turning Aaron Ramsey into Jacob Ramsey at Burnley costs us £10m extra (for example) - that's still a bargain!
-
This is what Chelsea and Man City, and to a lesser degree Liverpool have done for years. And it's what fans miss when they complain about FFP. It's almost worth running a youth team as a completely separate entity - bring in the players so that they can be sold to fund the first team. If one or 2 move into the first team squad completely a season, you are doing amazing work.
-
This feels right - I trust Emery's judgement, so there is no point in just keeping him on the bench. Good price, low (ish) risk. Either he goes a smashes it, in which case we've got a serious player who has developed for a good price - developed in a way he couldn't by staying with us. Or he becomes Rhian Brewster - in which case we've sold him at his peak.
