  1. Oh and how much to be done on the treadmill....
  2. I think anything north of 60 miles starts to get crazy to be honest, but I break down at 50, so I will never know that. Whats interesting is seeing how different people react to different training plans; some people need mega mileage, some just go for the three quality sessions, and not even 40 miles and then cross train. Depends on how good people are at recovering between sessions.
  3. 100 miles per week. Wow. I presume thats 2 training sessions a day? And what time are you aiming for?
  4. Radio show on one of the greats; Nurmi. Famed I believe for running with a stop watch and pacing himself. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b009twrf
  5. What time are you aiming for?
  6. Well his natural talent is out of balance; as an athlete he’s fast, had incredible acceleration, footballing wise he improved immensely and with his speed his ‘slowness’ of thought was perhaps compensated. Now he’s lost his natural edge and I would say more importantly his desire. Yes he’s probably achieved more than others who have come through the ranks and were hyped; the Moore brothers, Delfouenso. And Shane Paul. In part his decline has been magnified by the players around him; when you are in a team with players like Barry, Young, Carew, Milner, Petrov, its a damn sight easier to be a decent player. So yes his career has exceeded expectations. He just shouldn't be on the silly money he is, and he shouldn’t have baulked up, and taken better care of himself. Would be delighted if he scored some goals...
  7. To be honest no. His is a sad story; he could have had a very decent career; not a world beater, but a much loved striker who chipped in with 10-15 goals a season. Instead he’s spent more time as a bench warmer/club goer/a ghost on the pitch player. That he’s made an enormous amount of money is depressing. Anyone who follows https://twitter.com/avfcgoals will know how useful he was; not just goals, but match winners. His football obituary could have been written three or four years ago.
  8. So 2017 Marathon Plans are starting. Targeting Manchester and somewhere under 3.15. See Andy has started training for London. Anyone else?
  9. What number was Gustavo Bartlet? And did his sunglasses have a number?
  10. Great time. I was fine until last four miles, and then just couldn’t find anything left. Really cocked up hydration and refuelling; Abingdon only had cups for most of the drink stations, which I find impossible to deal with unless you walk through.
  11. Got the monkey off my back and ran a decent marathon on Sunday; 3.25.59, 17 minutes off Brighton time. Was doing about 40 miles a week, one long run, plus tempo run, but no speed work. You definitely need the speed work to get faster. Now dithering about doing another one, didn’t get in London, so looking at the options (one thing is for sure I am NOT doing Brighton) for the spring. Or maybe just stick to halfs, and try to get below 1.29.
  12. I would love some kind of triathlon, when they literally pulled it out of the hat on the day!
  13. This is the thing I don’t like about triathlon; its so over balanced to running. I know the reason they have it in that order (for safety), but would love to have it in a different order, and also increase the length of swim (would also like the removal of wet suits and the force introduction of breast stroke!!). Have been tempted by the Alpe d’huez by the nature of the parlours, but too many other fun challenges before then...
  14. If you read Born to Run it talks about how complex the foot is and how it can deal with all manners of things, so the difference of the foot should be accommodated. I would guess that if you don’t get injury problems then orthotics would be unnecessary, if you do then try and solve it with shoes (and exercises, strengthening & stretching) and then if necessary orthotics.
  15. If you over pronate and you buy a pair of shoes to deal with that, then orthotics should be unnecessary, as the shoes are already dealing with the problem. I wore orthotics for near 20 years, then saw a physio who said why are you wearing the shoes and orthotics. Tried with orthotics, and didn’t have problems. Its not to say that orthotics don’t work for some, but more than likely you won’t need them. Most important is finding the best shoes. I ve always found Asics to be the best, though not the most stylish or the lightest.
  16. Great park run down in Plymouth; Plym Valley. Beautiful part of the country, tough little course
  17. It depends on how you measure it. Coventry became one of the most prosperous places in Britain in the 50s & 60s when the car industry was in boom. You could see that the council did actually have some far reaching good ideas; the Polytechnic and Warwick University were well funded. They had a great sports centre. And as will you know Coventry Railway station for its time was pretty impressive! Its got a dreadful ring road of course. When the car industry (and supporting industry) hit the rocks, so did Cov.
  18. Its doable if you do the training and get the legs in the miles; on stuff like Jack Daniels it translates to just over.
  19. From what I recall the Germans destroyed a part of the Medieval Coventry, but the council did their fair share in the post war period. That was modernisation.
  20. Not sure this has been posted anywhere: http://epapers.bham.ac.uk/chrysalis.html Great images of Birmingham, of a world that didn’t exist probably ten years later and of what was the world that was to come
  21. Most people wouldn’t recommend stretching before running; rather stretch after, but always warm up properly. Some people do some gentle stretches after a warm up if they are doing intervals.
  22. Is that the Pinarello with Shimano Dura-Ace
  23. Yes. I seem to remember someone else said they had a cracked fork on a Boardman. I haven’t heard any bad reports about this, but this seems like a trend. I ve got a 11 year old Carbon Specialized that has thousands on the clock, not cracks or anything. Whatever you do, don’t ride.
