I was rather hasty to give him stick in the match thread after his miss and his effort in the build up to the penalty, but he turned it round.
The tracking back and battling to win it back leading to our first was excellent, that's the kind of stuff you want to see.

That was a really excellent performance after 120 minutes on Thursday.
Didn't allow Bournemouth to create much, their best chances were from our mistakes.
Excellent going forwards, all of the front 4 were great.
We didn't look exhausted, which i think is the result of how Emery has taught us to how to manage and control games, always thinking long term over the course of the season.

Dumb from McGinn leading to that chance against

This is true, but he's been out for a month and then played 120 minutes less than 3 days ago - he probably shouldn't have started
Fair point, but unfortunately he's like that far too often even when fully fit and up to speed

Cash has been atrocious
Not just the penalty, but everything they are doing is coming down his side.
He's constantly out of position, not getting close enough and allowing easy balls across. Then there's all the dumb decisions he makes.
Prior to the our goal, he went charging in for the ball, missed it and set Bournemouth on the counter
Luckily Diaby got back and we go back up the other end and score.

Rogers is a baller
Great by Diaby tracking back in the build up, that's the kind of effort we need from him
-
Brainless from Cash, which is a regular occurrence.
And Diaby has been pathetic, done nothing apart from easily lose the ball and miss a sitter.

Very poor from Diaby

Budget squad builder Pep crying now about the schedule. clearing in the woods wanted 5 subs yet rarely uses them
Only 3 subs today, 4 midweek although 2 were in extra time, just 2 despite smashing luton 5-1 and those were in the last 10 mins, 1 in the 87th min in the first leg against madrid.
He's always moaning about something, just like that other word removed Klopp.

Yeah he was booked in the 95th minute of the first leg
However, https://www.uefa.com/uefaeuropaconferenceleague/clubs/players/250026721--emiliano-martinez/statistics/ shows him as only having 2 yellows in the competition, and i thought you needed 3 to be suspended?

The ref was standing way too close all pen shootout and even moved forward towards the spot as Luiz was on his run up. Couldn't believe what I was seeing.
Unbelievably unprofessional by the ref; he was basically inline with the post for Dougie's penalty, and then as you say started moving closer during the run up. Would have easily been visible and distracting to Dougie out the corner of his eye

Worth noting that since the end of the international break, which was only 3 weeks ago, we've played 4 league games compared to Lille's 2, and their games were both at home. We've had trips to Man City and Arsenal.
Their domestic schedule will have benefitted them in terms of fitness and freshness, ours the opposite.
So we've done well to grind it out.

I think over the two legs we saw the downside of (by necessity given injuries tbf) getting through previous stages of the competition playing at like 25% to try and manage workload.
It's then not easy to turn it on when you come up against someone who is a lot, lot better than you've faced to date. Probably doubly so given there's quite a few in the side who havent really got much experience of a european run.
Still, we dug out the result, and that is all that matters in cup competitions. Hopefully these two games give a bit of a wake up to the intensity we will need to play at to get further.

Back to his early season form before all the gambling stuff broke
Even if he's not getting goals or assists, he was holding it up, carrying it and generally putting defenders on the back foot

Brilliant, this team and manager is something else

'World's best' Van Djik nearly doing a Gerrard

Absolutely mad how poor Bournemouth's finishing has been overall.
Although Solanke's goal was excellent

Assist to the ground staff for watering the hell out of the pitch before the game

Good win, but we are going to have to play much, much better next week.
Gave Lille far too much space, and let them exploit it through stupid decisions and turnovers, e.g. the 1 on 1 Emi saved from whatever Rogers was trying to do in the first half with that bizarre ball backwards.
-
far, far, too easy for them
we are offering nothing
-
2-0 up, 85 mins gone and you are giving free headers 7 yards out
unacceptable
Set pieces have been an issue for ages and nothing has been done about it
-
pathetic
disgraceful effort at the near post
a set piece yet again!
We've done **** all the last 20 mins and got exactly what we deserved.
-
I have a bit of sympathy we Luiz on that fk
He's got players running at speed at him near the edge of the box because Bailey couldn't be bothered to make an effort 5 seconds earlier
-
Emi again
That was a pathetic attempt to block at the near post by Digne
Too many playing far too casual atm

To have the strength to hold it up, run with the ball with defenders hanging off him, but then also have the quick feet, vision and passing ability, and finishing. Very excited about what he can do in the future.
