    Race for Champions League - 2023/2024

    On the topic of "would you rather questions" we have never played in the Champions League under its current guise and that is a tad shameful. If we have qualified previously and had a few runs, a trophy would generally be preferable, but having never had a Champions League night at Villa Park is something we need to remedy.

    Article in the FT this morning about Nassef Sawiris. Mainly about his plans for OCI where the majority of his wealth is if anyone is interested. We are mentioned in passing.:


    From London and Abu Dhabi, Sawiris is building NNS into a holding company that can manage his various investments — including Aston Villa. He and US billionaire Wes Edens, co-founder of Fortress Investment Group, acquired a 55 per cent stake in the club for £30mn in 2018, rescuing it from financial crisis. A year later it was promoted to the lucrative Premier League and Sawiris has since expanded his stable of sports assets under his and Edens’ V Sports, including a stake in Portuguese club Vitória. The group announced in December that US investor Atairos had become a minority partner in V Sports, with people familiar with the matter saying the roughly 20 per cent stake valued Aston Villa at more than £500mn. While Sawiris’ bet appears to be paying off, he insisted he was not in Aston Villa for the money. “Anybody who does football and says this is a pure investment, in 95 per cent of the case he’s a liar,” Sawiris said. “It’s a passion. It’s addictive.     I'm going to assume a few years ago West Brom's academy was something akin to Brazil 1970 given all the highly rated players who came out from there.

    I'm 46 and all week I have been like a 10 year old waiting for this game. I'm actually excited. 

    Villa potentially going top, at home, under the lights on a record winning streak, to the team bottom of the league shipping goals left and right. 

    In other times I would have been concerned that this was all going too well and it would come crashing down around us. But no, we are now "New Villa", Villa 2.0 and that shit doesn't happen to us anymore.

    The stinger for me is the rationale being given. "Too many seat too quickly" is obvious bullshit, it doesn't even give us a top 10 stadium in terms of capacity. It is not like we have a great stadium and we were talking about adding another tier somewhere, it is a horrible little stand that ruins the aesthetics of the whole ground.

    For the first time in ages, I am not worried they are going to smash us to bits, I am actually looking forward to the game with a touch of light optimism. 

    How far we have come, that we can play the best team on the planet currently and think we could be in with a shout.

    These two along with Pau's passing range from the back transform that left hand side.

    I can't imagine Everton will take this will take this seriously given they are a very poor team at risk of relegation, even if they do want to maintain momentum from the weekend. 

    We should win this at home even with a weakened team.
