Don't a lot of the best teams do that?  The full backs push up, the centre backs go a bit wider and the defensive midfielder moves in between them to pick the ball up and move it on with short passes.

You could literally have thrown a blanket over the three of them they were so close, and then the problem with Doug is he struggles to find forward passes.

  2. I'm sure that a lot of the people who rate Luiz so highly do so because of his 'filthy' bits of skill, but impressive as those moments are, they rarely/ever result in anything significant. He obviously has talent in some respects, but I don't think that his skill set translates particularly well to being a major influence on matches.

I think most people accept that he has limitations as a defensive player, but presumably many feel that his supposed 'playmaker' abilities compensate for this. But that really is the part that I have an issue with. I think the idea that he is a great passer is largely a myth. He is a sideways passer. He can hit long floaty diagonals when given time, but so can most players. He isn't an incisive passer, there is no penetration to his play. He doesn't have the vision of someone like McGinn. It is in games where we are in control, like the Brentford game, where this becomes more apparent.

Would it be different if he was played further forward? I'm not so sure.

  3. Even if his performances haven't been particularly good lately, him and Konsa is undoubtedly our best CB pairing by a country mile. It doesn't help anyone to keep chopping and changing the central defence, and to drop him with so many other changes today was bizarre.

Again, I’m looking at a small representation of the game, but given the way Targett has played this year and the way he looked in the small sample that I saw today, you either have to start Bailey in his place if he’s ready and if you’re staying 3-5-2, or you have to give Young another chance if you revert to a back 4 or if Bailey isn’t ready.

I thought that up until the last ten Targett did a pretty good job of stopping crosses coming in, he blocked quite a few attacks down that side.

  5. Brilliant today, that pass to cash was exquisite. Did get a bit concerned when he went 'full-on McGinn' for a few minutes that he might get carded again, but he managed to rein it in.
