  1. Ultimately for me our success this season has been down to Douglas Luiz and Kamara being so good they can take on three-man midfields, meaning we have an automatic overload. Since Brentford we have been struggling to adapt to a situation where we have basically never (and won’t again this season) have them together. It’s a big switch and I hope Unai can crack it.
  2. Argh balls. Ok well even if we don’t get back into this, we are still sitting 4th and still in Europe. Telling myself that!
  3. Yeah worth every penny of the £40m - and yes ideal pairing for someone like Pau.
  4. I think a big part of it is not wanting to drop Lenglet as he’s been decent but wanting Konsa/Torres/Cash back in. Personally I feel in that situation he should just make the tough decision - he’s taken the option today where none of his regular starters feel overlooked. Time will tell if he gets the performance as a result.
  5. Yeah I should’ve played this as ITK eh. Unless… Unai is just reading my posts…? Unai - don’t start Cash RW, I wasn’t saying it was a GOOD idea.
  6. God I am so smart it scares me.
  7. Got a feeling - and people will hate me saying this - we will see Cash on the right wing. I think if JJ is out he might play Tielemans further left and Bailey off Ollie. Then he can play Konsa and Pau without dropping Lenglet, which I think he’ll like.
  8. Maybe you’re right. They’re expecting him to be starting for Serbia by the Euros this summer (been called up to recent squads) so if our second choice is playing for his country aged 18 with a season under his belt in the CL, we will be doing well! I’d be very surprised though if we signed ANOTHER right back having brought him in.
  9. Fair enough on Tim (though I think he’ll have a part to play) but I think Nedeljkovic is intended to be the step up in quality you mention. We haven’t gone and dropped the best part of £10m on a right back who is playing CL football for him to come here and play for the U23s/sit on the bench all season. He’s coming in to improve an area of the team that needs it.
  10. I only watched some but interesting to read that vs the stats - Everton had 23 shots at Old Trafford! That can’t happen too regularly even these days. But trust your eye test - sometimes games can still feel very comfortable even if the stats are skewed, especially with an early lead.

    Ezri Konsa

Just the second leg. Which is fine as we want him for 90 mins vs Spurs and West Ham.
  12. Looks that way for sure. I’m not questioning the decision, it is what it is, but if you’re Zaniolo and you’ve scored the winning goal in the final of this tournament, got 17 caps for Italy etc, and you don’t get the nod over a kid who was playing for Boro 6 weeks ago then you have to think things here have run their course. But you never know in football.
  13. This 100%. Compare to Newcastle who just tried to go in fifth gear every game and blew their whole season, league and Europe.
  14. Good line in the Guardian match report: ”The problem with setting the bar so high, as Villa have done this season, is the average performances feel anaemic.” Or the caviar/sausage line, as Wenger used to say.
  15. Without discounting the potential of a lingering injury, the game at the weekend is potentially our biggest since promotion. If they felt him playing 45 mins v Ajax was the best thing for his performance vs Spurs, it’s obviously the right decision.
  16. I came on here to post this the other way around - if we don’t lose to Spurs (as a draw in that game suits us fine) then taking tonight a little easy feels fine. If we lose to Spurs it’ll feel disappointing. But it tends to be how Emery goes first leg so it wasn’t surprising either way.
  17. This is a guess but my assumption is he was only ever supposed to play 45 mins tonight. Guess we will find out shortly
  18. They’ve had one shot on target! (Come off his line nicely I guess)
  19. Seems a weird thing to say given we are fourth in the PL despite having loads of injuries all season!
  20. This is how Emery’s teams have approached every first leg in 16 years. He has a decent record overall.
  21. I’d keep Emi even if we sold every other player. We’d still get a few 0-0s
  22. Whether it’s “FFP” or not, every business in the world has to balance the books to SOME degree. That was as true 100 years ago in football as it is today.
  23. I am assuming here there is a theory doing the rounds that if they get relegated we will buy him back and sell him again?
  24. I said McGinn but purely because of age. I don’t think we will sell any of these.
  25. To be fair there should be a system that suits 92 clubs not just a % of the top tier - but that’s OT! For Villa, if we have to sell to buy that’s just a case of balancing the books and that’s fair enough in any business. As for Dougie - I see both sides. I get that at £100m you can find other great midfielders - but even the best can take time to settle. Also as someone who always sang his praises and said to be patient when others were saying he was rubbish and to get rid, I just want to enjoy him for another season or two
