sorry to but in.....I have difficulty with your reasoning. I class myself as a supporter and a fan.....I renew my season ticket every year, but don't go away games anymore, age is a hamper, and getting tickets too. Every fan/supporter has a right to respond to supporting Villa, How they please, within the rules/law. I sing quite loudly, much to my spouses displeasure.....but I am not obliged to, its my choice. As you can see from my posts, I am well aware of our shortfalls( IMO) and openly express them on here....not in the ground, on matchday....but thats my call. Supporters giving out, over episodes of poor play, is evident across the whole football, industry.....or even staying away, if you are so severely affected. Folk can still be Villa Fans and not go to games.....and they have every right to voice their opinion adversely, if they so wish. Long live "Free Speech"

Thanks. I am not blaming anyone, because that would be deemed as criticism, and I emphasize, my intention is observation...not criticism, there is a subtle difference. I have also been quick to accept, we are WIP, so things that I see, will take time to improve, that's of course, if the manager sees what I see, (who knows) and of course he is what matters. The manager does set up the team and sets out the tactics, with the only available players he has....so maybe it would be different, if he had a full first team. We have shown, what we did during those fateful 9 minutes, has been repeated in similar fashion in other games, Like Luton, Man U, Forest( where we still won) it's nothing new......do you think Unai, is expecting that, on each occasion, judging by his reactionary expressions, I don't think he is. I do not think Unai Emery sets up with notion, that these collapses might occur as a result of his planning....for whatever reason ( and that gets tricky, and opinionated) he is not expecting those lapses. I know why we play at a slow pace, and the benefits expected from it, will be subjective .... Unai will ultimately be judged by results against targets, as to whether, the style is worth it, or paid dividends. Personally, I am not obsessed, with the style of a team, I just like winning, and I pretty much take what comes, in terms of how we get there.....I know some fans prefer their perceived entertainment, so 3-3 will be a good day out. I am just a fan, who thinks, if you don't pay much attention to defensive appreciation, you only achieve so much, not the top prizes....as they say goals fill stadiums, defences win titles....that's where I am, and I make no apologies for it...it won us the European cup, being resolute, I won't change from appreciating that team and its doggedness. I am not sure, why, we are not so tight as we was last season, or earlier this season...but I do think Mings is big miss, for his presence and defensive organisation. I will finally say, I am not blaming anyone, for these bizarre collapses, its collective....and it will only be remedied collectively. I hope I have answered you, Honestly.

I think that is the essence of the debate. To get Champions League places and to compete with any hope, you have to be consistent and resolute.....and collapsing like we did, is commensurate with those comments. I agree, no game is a banker, and it can be equally annoying, when some folk think is...but thats their call. The top 3 who are cemented in the champions league places, show the minerals to make them what they are.....we in contrast have some way to go, that's clear. In response to your point, that collapse can happen...it has happened a few too many times.....It only happens to teams who allow it to happen, that's another thing that separates us from the very top. as the saying goes...."first time, coincidence, second time happenstance, third time, enemy action".....this is not going away, whilst we are WIP and having an unprecedented run of long term injuries to key players. I don't think it's about perspective, ( in that sense) that's kind of accepting what has just happened as ok, and it's not....Unai Emery, will not be breezing in Monday morning, preaching perspective, he will be intent on working on how that debacle is not repeated. I think the perspective we need is about recognising what we are good at, and what we are not so good at, and plugging those weaknesses, and building on the strengths.....either now or in the Summers window.....any injury returnees will also help. We are undoubtedly WIP and its encouraging to see Morgan Rogers development, Ollies assault on the magic 20 goal threshold, and Ezri's call up ( despite his day off on Saturday) Personally, I think champions league football, is a big ask for us, with the squad size as it is, and FFP rearing its ugly head, at every sign of our ambition.....I wouldn't refuse it naturally.....just a big ask for me.

There's your answer....City are the same.....The next 3 down Us, Spurs, and Man U....have similar issues, check the goals against column. when we go 2 goals up the likelihood is the opposition seize a plan to come back at us.....that's the time the "Off the ball" skill set gets tested.....we don't stop opponents coming at us, very well. You can make your mind up about that.....but when you scrutinize what the best teams do.....they go after you, to deny you the ball, to hunt the ball down, and smother any initiative, the opponent has...That's their way of defending in midfield. as the old managers use to say, the time to get your foot in, is after you have just scored....its called competing. When you have one the best Goalkeeper around and one of the best strikers, you always achieve something, but we need a bit more, for consistency. Injuries are killing us, I know that, and the bigger squads this time of year, highlight that....its at the business end of the season, it makes the difference.

So did you think we would get a draw against Brentford, before the game?....with Brentford in 15th place and struggling in the league......and us at home in 4th. Did you think we would be cruising a 2-0 up, and capitulate in the manner that we did, to a team who didn't lay a glove on us up till then? That's what many fans are discussing, without digressing to how well the season has gone as a whole....they are saying, how did that happen, is that a surprise. The stadium is full to capacity, every game, with spirited fans, singing their heads off, me included.....Does that strike you as fickle or unappreciative fans? Fans have a right to express themselves after a game....and that one did throw up some anomalies.....Fans reserve the right, to express themselves differently. Many think the race for the champions league has passed, some think we have created a huge task for ourselves, some think nothing has changed.....who's right, I don't know. On the evidence of the collapse, and other games, where we have done similar, I am not sure if we are actually ready for Champions league competition, anyway, with a WIP team...but that's just me.

I agree. It wasn't all on him, it was a collective effort....but it was just him we was addressing in debate.
-
I couldn't agree more. Look, Kamara is a huge loss, so is Mings, and I still think we miss, the dogged intensity of Buendia, in certain games.....but Kamara is no Rice of Rodri...that is another level Kamara has a big influence on Dougies game too, Dougie has lost his edge, like he did before Kamara arrived....because he is a fill in No 6, bless him...Tielemans is not a pivot player either....as you suggest, we are missing aggression from that position. I think we sometimes see the missing player, but forget the influence they have on others in the team. Pau is much better, with the additional assertiveness, in front of him, Kamama brings.
-
which kinda dispels the notion of tiredness. The last 10-15 minutes showed the intensity of an early season game.....so the infamous 9 minutes, must have been a tea-break.

I accept, that the injuries and suspensions are hitting our resources hard....and under the circumstances, we have achieved miracles. So why do some, seem to think we are going to blow teams away, with consideration to those circumstances. The top teams are going for the title and the lesser teams are preoccupied with the trap door.....so why should they be talking in terms of dead rubbers like Brentford. All these teams, fight for their fans.....every game is a fight, and that's what I look for in a fixture. I would accept us scoring only 6 goals in the rest of the fixtures, 1 every game, as long as we conceded none.

Look the season has been great, lets get that Elephant in the room out of the way, to start with. We have let 2 goal leads slip, too many times this season, for it not to be a concern....and the main concern is the manner of the collapses. Pau Torres, is not solely responsible for them either....that's out the way, too. The defensive side of our game, needs scrutiny and forensic examination.....I see things during a game, that concern me, as do others I guess. I am not suggesting Unai changes his football philosophy, but I am suggesting we concede too many and too easily....and I do not share the view, the forwards have to cover for that, by scoring more, and missing less chances, as some propagate....I don't accept that trade off. Its largely the manner of those goals conceded yesterday, that's the major concern......The opposition never laid a glove on us, before the infamous 9 minutes.....Then they smelt a rat, we was standing off, and that was the incentive they needed. Paul Torres, played his part, but it wasn't all on him. Konsa, stopped Vinicius Jnr, but couldn't stop Reguillion?.....It was collective incompetency and in no way was Unai, expecting that. Pau Torres is a fine footballer, and I'm glad we have him....but he is missing, crucially adept players who can compliment his skill set. When we see teams, with physically adept players like VVD, Rodri, Gabriel or Saliba......it has a significant effect on those teams.....We miss Mings and Kamara.....and so does Pau.
-
The problem is, the players he needs around him....Kamara and Mings are not there. I understand the necessity of trade offs, for where we are......but progression, in itself, warrants limiting those trade offs to a minimum. My main point is to progress, we have to defend better.......how we do that, is a debate in itself. our record this season, of 49 goals conceded, is not all on Pau......We all know that.
-
I agree. I also acknowledge, the balance of the players around him, with those attributes, leave him exposed. We all know, what he does best.....and I still want him in our team.
-
and Rodri is one of the main pieces in theirs.....I think we may have a different view of the context to dominating the ball....I don't see dominating possession, mainly unchallenged in your own half, as dominating the ball......City dominate the ball, in the opponents last third. For me, there is a significant difference. What Unai wants to do, and what we are doing is too different things......We dominated Possession yesterday, and we scored 3 goals, great......but without the ball, we didn't hunt in back, so we invited them back in. I don't believe, that is a strategy, Unai wants from his team......losing the ball in duels as easy as we do, is not dominating the ball.
-
Simple is sometimes, most poignant...as the old acronym suggests K.I.S.S. I don't accept your point as a trade off......we need both, if we have plans to go somewhere. We are WIP ,so I am hoping Unai addresses some of defensive frailties, in the summer.
-
A major issue for me. Its like school kids who only want to play when they have the ball.....It's not a team who is designed to go after the ball and hunt the ball down. We simply do not have enough players in the team with a nose for it. We have no one to come close to Rodri or Rice, Kamara is our closest and even he gets caught in threatening positions....sadly even though we miss him, he's out until next year......This role is crucial to get right. Far too many times this season, we have let a 2 goal lead slip.....and let's be clear here, it's not just against the top sides. So the notion that we haven't got the level of talent like them, is misleading. Our talent leans heavily towards offensive play, both in numbers and in style We are 4th, because we have an abundance of offensive players, who often show a very competent standard......defensively, we cannot say the same....and the stats don't lie. We simply cannot expect to just out score teams, its naive. Under the circumstances the season as a whole has been great....but we are now in danger of choking, and its not the offensive side, that letting us down. We have one of the best Goalkeepers around, it's inconsiderate how as a team, we fail to protect him. I think Unai, has a big job on to address these issues.

Many, many things are required to be a successful team............but if we" stand off" and fail to engage in a challenge, like we did, for periods yesterday.......we will go nowhere. We can have the best everything.....but if we don't compete, we are passive.....and passive teams get torn one. If we analyse the top 3....a place where we are aiming for in the coming years, amongst all their talent, they have aggression and intensity......you could see on the faces of Trossard and Gabriel, after a determined block by Gabriel....this team is fired up. Yesterday, during that infamous 9 minutes, I was discombobulated with astonishment.....it was puny. I ask the question.....are we really ready for champions league football, are we really, honestly?

who does? Some would call it denial, some would say its puny, some would blame the injuries, some would be grateful for the point......it's just folk looking for a reason to stay positive. I'm glad, I am not the manager, tonight.....I might say something, I would regret. I have had concerns about our defending for some time, even during games we have won....and I am talking about the whole team, not just the back 5.....I don't see any appreciation of it, or for it.....I just see a team, that wants to outscore the opposition. The problem is, its not always possible to outscore every team....because they set up to shut you out. We need world class forwards to have a chance to do that, and even then, it's hard. You only have to study the defensive work of the top 3, to fully appreciate the focus they have on it......and the intensity, their players employ, to go after opponents. The top teams, work like trojans in going after opponents to deny them fluidity, and passing networks, they smother opponents initiatives......we don't, we are passive in comparison, and go easy, when we have a lead. Sure they may have better players, but the mentality is trained in to them. You don't just work when you have the ball...you work harder to get it back....that's why they are top 3. Unai has said...."we don't want excuses".....and I for one, don't want to look for them, either.
