What bigger incentive can the players have than the thought of being top of the league for 24 hours at least, but hopefully on Christmas Day as well? Massive, massive game and possibly achieving over 40 points before the end of the year is ridiculous.  So I think we have a real opportunity here to lay a marker to the rest and create a nice cushion of points going into the United game and new year.

Injuries and a silly suspension are going to leave us light and set plays (against) could be significant, that’s why I’d go with Konsa, Carlos and Lenglet. We need to defend well.

                                 Martinez

        Konsa      Carlos       Lenglet       Digne

                       McGinn       Luiz

            Bailey                             Ramsey

                       Diaby        Watkins

Subs:  Marschall, Olsen, Cash, Moreno, Chambers, Dendoncker, Zaniolo, O’Reilly, Duran

If we can score early, I’m going with a controlled 3-0 win.  UTV

Good team that, well it must be cos it's same as mine 😉

God, I feel nervous ! Come on you Villa boys !

  2.                        Martinez

    Konsa.    Carlos.   Lenglet.      Digne.

    Bailey.     McGinn.    Luiz.       Ramsey.

                      Diaby.

                                 Watkins.

Is the way I'd go IF Pau and Youri are out. Still enough quality to get the job done, as long as the attitude and application is 100%.

Lenglet and Carlos have had a bit of experience playing together in Europe so that will help.

Diaby needs to get back on track, hopefully this is the match he does it.

Zaniolo and Duran options off the bench.

  3. I picked the same team as Emery last time out (wooh), but on reflection, it wasn't the side that won us the game, so maybe we both got it wrong 🤔

    I think I'd go (fitness issues aside);

                            Martinez

    Konsa.     Carlos.        Pau.        Digne.

    Bailey.       McGinn.    Luiz.       Ramsey.

                 Tielemans.

                                    Watkins.

I think it's pretty safe to say these will sit in, hope to be hard to break down & leave little space in behind, so (if fit) I'd put Tielemans in there for his guile as opposed to Diaby's pace (& current lack of form).

Toss of a coin at left back really, either way I think both will get minutes.

Hate these games where we are absolutely nailed on favourites, because the pessimist in me is expected to be let down, but this is a different Villa. Emery's Villa. At home. The 12th man. Under the lights.

    3-1 Ramsey, Watkins, Zaniolo.

    Top of the league 🙏

  4. If Bailey and Tielemans are both out,  I'd go;

                             Martinez

                Konsa.   Carlos.    Pau.

    Cash.                                            Moreno.

                    Kamara.    McGinn.

    Diaby.              Watkins.            Ramsey.

Pretty flexible this, but more likely Cash RM ahead of Konsa as a 442.

A fair bit of running power up top.

Confident McGinn can step in centrally and drive us on.

I got 1-1 right last night so I'll stick with a 1-3 Villa win.

  5. I'm all for making changes in this one, and I still think we can get the point required (minimum)

                                Olsen

Cash    Chambers    Lenglet     Digne/Moreno (45 each)

    Diaby    Dendoncker    Luiz      Ramsey

                    Zaniolo

                                        Duran

Think Chambers is the biggest concern there, but hopefully he would perform better than he did at RB last time out. Can't be any worse, can he...🙈

Olsen improved last time out, so why not!

Minutes for Moreno in view to Sunday.

To be able to rest Martinez, Konsa, Carlos, Torres, McGinn, Kamara, Tielemans, Bailey, Watkins for Brentford would be massive IMO.

    1-1 tonight.

    1-3 win on Sunday.

Then top of league on 22nd 😬

  6. SkyBet have the following odds

    Us  - 100/30

    Draw - 3/1

    Them - 8/11

So they are still favourites, but nothing like the usual margins. Current form, Rhodri out and our home form, the main factors you'd suspect.

They still have the quality to hit us for 4 or 5 on their day but I hope we do ourselves justice and cut out the unforced errors. Everyone needs to be at least 7/10.

I suspect plenty of goals and I think we will need at least 3 to win it.

  7. I think definite starters against Bournemouth (injuries permitting) are Martinez, Konsa, Pau, Digne, McGinn, Luiz, Tielemans and Watkins, so that's 8 players I'd rest for this one (well 7 because we have to start with Emi).

    So on that basis, giving us enough to win (hopefully) and managing the squad, I think something like;

                                      Martinez

             Cash       Carlos         Lenglet        Moreno

            Bailey     Kamara    Iroegbunam    Ramsey

                              Diaby

                                               Duran

Hopefully get a good hour from Moreno and Ramsey and Diaby can play is way into a bit of form.

I suspect he's claiming that Konsa's handball should have been a penalty - despite the fact that Emi collided with Konsa and dropped the ball on top of him as they both fell to the ground.  Did it touch his arm?  Yes.  Was it a penalty?  Never in a million years.

Ah yes may have been that one, or Carlos challenge on Gil in the same incident. Neither were pens !

A Spurs mate has just said they should have had a stonewall penalty, I don’t recall that?

The only one I can think your mate was referring to, would be Digne's tackle on Kulusevski in the second half. VAR checked it about 5 times, probably hoping something in it (least that's how it feels sometimes), but he clearly won the ball.

Voted Martinez MOTM, mainly for the double save, but Kamara was class (apart from one blip) and Tielemans changed the game.

Rode our luck, but also had a goal ruled out, Torres header, Bailey hit the post, Digne's free kick, Watkins goal-line header... a few chances of our own there..

    League table looks 👌

First time I've put good for a ref since I don't know how long.

McGinn MOTM for me, got a good goal and was integral to how we bosses the first half. Some dodgy moments but we deliberately take risks to be able to pull the opponents shape apart.

Incredible performance, they had an amazing record at home and gave west ham a very tough game in the semi final last year. The box midfield with Tielemans in one of the advanced positions worked very very well.

Funny how people see things differently, I thought McGinn was one of our weaker players tonight (yet, created and scored one!!)

Bailey MOTM, Tielemans a close second for me.

Fantastic away performance though, I'd say maybe only Cash was below 7/10. (From the starting eleven).

    Bring on Luton..

Wasn't Moreno again an unused sub tonight? I really can't see him on the back of 0 minutes since mid May suddenly been thrown in against Sterling.

Everton is more realistic game for him to start, probably Ramsey aswell.

Aside from that probably the team we'll pick with possibly Bailey getting the nod although we see his usual standard away. Zaniolo is getting there but against this type of opponent he might keep giving the ball away unnecessarily.

Maybe we'll go 3 at the back instead as Chelsea might play that formation.

I agree about Moreno, doesn't bode well for him starting with no minutes last night or previously - It was more wishful thinking that inclusion.

  12. Be interesting to see what sort of team he puts out against Zrinjski now (sandwiched between Brighton and wolves)!

They've won today, so if (god forbid) we lost, we could be out after game 3 (arguably our toughest game on paper).

Who will want Chambers starting in that? And full use of the squad?

I'm sure it won't come to that, but we've put extra pressure on ourselves now (& more reason to go stronger!)

I’m backing Emery on the rotation. We have 5 more games with 3 at home to get it right.

I really want us to beat Chelsea more then I wanted us to win this and half the team playing less minutes gives us a much better chance of doing this.

I personally would have preferred them* playing 60 minutes and (possibly) winning the game.

Not sure an extra 30 minutes is going to make a massive difference. It's as much the travelling midweek as anything else.

    Plus winning breeds confidence.

*them - being the 'better' players.

Feel like we learnt nothing from the Stevenage game there.

You can't rotate that many players and expect to maintain any semblance of shape or form.

Chambers and Lenglet chucked into a back 4 that's never played together...can't really do that and expect to keep it tight at the back.

An out of form Kamara given Teilemans as his partner in the middle is going to expose that untried defence even more.

You can bring in Digne for Kamara.

Chambers OR Lenglet in for Pau

Tielemans in for the out of form midfielder, but not the linchpin that's held us together this season.

Zaniolo and Duran for Diaby and Waktins is then fine if you haven't completely shafted the rest of the team.

But we tried to play it too cautious with ssving our fitness, and under estimated them. Something I didn't think would happen for an Emery team.

Maybe easy to say in hindsight, but I had those concerns looking at the starting lineup and they proved correct. Long way to go... let's hope the league form and morale doesn't suffer as a result.

Maybe but our starting XI should’ve been too strong for them.  There was no kids in there and many strong European veterans like Chambers, Tielemans and Lenglet as well as current internationals like Digne.  It’s not a weak team.  They should’ve had more than enough to win.

    Should've been, but wasn't.

The problem was playing too many of those players.

If you put just Chambers into our best eleven, you can probably just about get away with it.

When you put Lenglet (not played a game for us) and Tielemans (rusty) also in, it starts to show.

Especially when we're trying to play out from the back.

You then have Zaniolo (who did ok btw) as a new player settling in, and Bailey who literally never plays well away from VP it just adds to the problem.

Start strong and change after 45/60 minutes, we've now lost the game and not really saved anything from it cos we've still used our so called better players for 30 mins anyway ?!

I'd rather of won our first 3 grouo games then completely rested the players!

  16. Need to see a massive improvement now after tonight's performance. Kamara and McGinn lucky to start.

                         Martinez

    Cash.      Konsa.       Pau.        Moreno.

    McGinn.    Luiz.    Kamara.      Ramsey.

                   Diaby.      Watkins.

Olsen, Digne, Lenglet, Tielemans, Dendoncker, Bailey, Duran, Zaniolo, anyone but Chambers.

I want to see DESIRE, FIGHT, PASSION.

It’s not like we played any better when the other players came on.

We didn't, which is probably more concerning than the original team selection. Usually Emery sees things and will fix it. We looked like we had no game plan at all after the subs.

That said, even then, we had 3 very good chances of getting a draw or even a win. (Ramsey, Diaby & Tielemans).

  18. Ratings:

Martinez 4 - Feel disappointed he let in the third.

Chambers 0 - Slow, sluggish, crap on the ball, partly to blame for all 3.

Digne 1 - Partly at fault for all 3 goals l, scored albeit a deflection, no heart.

Konsa 5 - Not surprisingly looked uncomfortable next to Calum.

Lenglet 5 - Nothing overly bad, but didn't inspire confidence.

Tielemans 3 - Another one sluggish, missed the sitter at the end, summed his game.

Kamara 3 - Like Youri, didn't influence the game at all, didn't want to do the dirty side. Midfield gaps all over.

McGinn 3 - when he doesn't play well. We don't,  it seems. Looked lethargic. No passion at all.

Bailey 3 - probably should've been a red for his opponent, couple of dribbles, goes missing.

Zaniolo 6.5 - decent first half, good shot, decent work rate. Tired quickly.

Duran 7 - took his goal well, unlucky with another chance, had a bit of presence.

Emery - 0 - ultimately blame lies with him, poor starting line up, odd subs - players coming off, not the ones going on.

    Crap.
