The good thing is that we're about halfway through dropping some of these atrocious contracts that have been signed over the years and have locked up long term futures of a lot of key players (Watkins/Emi/JJ/McGinn/Konas/Pau/Diaby). Unai doesn't like operating with a huge squad anyway and likes to give youth a chance so Europa league is not the end of the world.
If we can find a way to move a lot of the dead wood and high wages (sorry Digne!), then I think we can still make 1 or 2 astute signings in the summer.
If you had asked me 3 years ago if there was a possibility that Real Madrid or Barcelona or either of the Milan clubs would be playing at VP next season, I would have called you absolutely delusional. But that's a real possibility now.
So imagine 3 years from now what we could do if we cut the line into UCL and what kind of players Unai could attract and build around. Europa League would still be good and give us a chance at the competition, but I want to reiterate that Unai puts us in a way better position to maintain UCL and continue gaining ground as compared to Howe or Reneiri with Newcastle and Leicester.
Agreed. It’s a weird one for me is the UCL. I almost care more about what comes with qualification than the tournament itself. I mean, I couldn’t tell you the last time I watched a CL game that wasn’t the final - and I miss most of those too.
Everybody knows there is the potential for us to be very borderline when it comes to FFP this summer and there is talk that we may need to lose a player or two to stay compliant. Nobody can argue against the financial boost the CL will give us and Id feel a lot more secure as a fan knowing we have that money and we may not need to sell players in order to compete with the big boys. Or certainly forced to sell anyway.
Our revenue is poor and our wage bill is high. If we go out in the group stages, fine, but the cash that comes with qualification is so important in our trajectory. Its fundamental.
From a fan perspective, given we’ll be in the lowest pot, there will be some great days out to look forward to. Madrid, Bayern, Barca, PSG - home and away. Even if we only qualify once, it would be great for the fans to experience the chance to see these teams play Villa.
For me, I’ll be devastated if we don’t qualify. I feel there is much riding on it.

What?
1. We could finish 4th.
2. Arsenal could knock Bayern out.
3. Man City, the holders, could knock Madrid out,
4. West Ham could turn it around in the 2nd leg.
All of those are possible and perhaps all bar number 4, are more likely than us winning the competition, given we are only in the QF and face a tough 2nd leg.
It’s all heading towards Villa needing to win the final in Athens I’m afraid.

Sadly enough @Delphinho123 is probably right.
The cosmos is lining up that we have to win in Athens to make the UCL.
The biggest moments require the biggest players.70% of the time, I’m probably right all of the time.

We don't know that at all.
You do. You just don’t know that I know you do.

Martinez MOTM says it all. Lucky to come away with a win there in all honesty. It’ll do.
Going to be tough in the return leg.

Let’s not beat around the bush here. We all know this is going to come down to Villa needing to win the UECL to qualify for the CL.
Big, big final awaits

Didn't know where else to put this and I do like a good Interstellar comp - just a reminder of how amazing a season we've had and how it's still in our hands.
Anything interstellar based and I’m in. What a film. Great video too.

I don’t rate Buendia at all.

I'd spend 5m on him, max. His wages wouldn't be above 40k a week. And even that is a stretch.

Leverkusen will get ripped apart in the Summer. Whoever owns the club is going to make a lot of money in the Summer.
I think we need to be clever with our transfers. Maybe spend big on 2 players with the intention of them being first teamers and pad out the squad with free transfers of high quality. If we want to be ballsy, maybe we sell a couple (Luiz and Ramsey) and roll the dice with some Monchi magic. Being in the CL will make us much more appealing.
Main focus still needs to be on shifting the 6/7 players that have no future here.

He's related to some old neighbours of ours....really pleased for them all.
He seems genuinely touched by his move to us......seems to have a good attitude to it all....the signs are good.

Just to add a 5th Scenario i.e. if City and Arsenal go out.
Scenario 5 - Madrid, Bayern, Liverpool, Leverkusen, Ath Madrid, Villa go through
Assume whoever goes through gets a draw away from home and a win at home
Current points totals are as follows
Germany - 16.357
England - 16.250
Scenario 5
Man City - 0.125
Arsenal - 0.125
Bayern - 0.571
Liverpool - 0.500
Leverkusen - 0.571
West Ham - 0.125
Dortumund - 0.143
Villa - 0.375
Germany - 17.642
England - 17.500
Scenario 5a - Madrid beat Bayern, Liverpool and Leverkusen get to the final, Villa go to the final
Bayern - 0.143
Liverpool - 0.500
Leverkusen - 0.500
Villa - 0.500
Germany - 18.285
England - 18.500
So not all hope is lost if both City and Arsenal lose. It just depends the manner of the defeats and if we can get 2 of Liverpool/West Ham/Villa into the final.
The way I see it is, it’s pretty much done if Arsenal go through.

We need another 5 points in my book. It then becomes virtually impossible for anybody to catch us. United as an example would need 17 points from 7 games. 5 wins and 2 draws or 6 wins. No chance.
2 wins Villa, 2 wins. Not even that.
We should go all out to beat Bournemouth and we’re almost there!- 3

That Archie Gray at Leeds will turn into a very, very good player.

Our best midfielder. Lock him down!
McGinn and Kamara are better.
Luiz is overrated on here. Good player but we treat him like he’s a world beater when I don’t think he is tbh. He’s been average a lot this season in matches.

He is what he is. He’s a quarterback style defender. Great for setting up attacks and splitting the lines but average defensively.
It’s a trade off unfortunately. I think we’re a better team with him in it though.

I’m just so ‘meh’ on him.

What is it with us and 2 goal leads.

Strong team. Really interesting that he’s played Rogers ahead of Diaby.
Expect Diaby is being eased back in and will see the last half hour.

Fancy them to beat United in a couple of weeks time

We’ll be giving that to Digne next Friday.

No. Torres was on the bench already for that game and was the player that came on to replace Mings when he got injured
I sometimes wonder how the season would have played out if Mings hadn’t got injured.
There is a part of me that thinks Torres being thrown in like he was, was a good thing for Villa as he had to adapt and grow into a PL player very quickly. Obviously it would have happened regardless of Ty’s injury, I believe it just expedited the process.
Would Mings and Torres have been our first choice? Tough to say because I know Emery likes a right and left footed partnership. If you watch the way we play, you’d understand why that is so important.
Fascinating to see how Mings comes back from the injury. One of my favourite ever Villa players for sure

This is a monumental result against them if Plymouth can hold on.
Coventry need a win tomorrow to have any hope of finishing in the play offs.
Its getting to the point where even draws aren’t good enough for them.
