I actually think that Carney is being prudent by waiting a bit. He is only half way through his contract. He can easily afford to wait until the summer and re-assess his options then. I think he will sign to be honest. I’m pretty sure he acted in a similar manner last time. Funnily enough, I don’t have that high expectations of him. He has talent but I’m not sure how he fits in. He’s not really an 8 and he’s not really a 10. He’s definitely not a wide forward or a 9. So what actually is he? I have much higher hopes for some of the other lads. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him drift through a fairly average career.

I don’t think that the quality of the squad is the major issue here. The greater problem is that we don’t have the right balance or blend. We have loads of 8’s but only one 6. We have loads of wide forwards but only 2 full backs etc. Our players are also a bit too similar physically. We lack power and pace everywhere. Gerrard will need to address this but it’s not a quick fix and he’ll need to work with what he has in the meantime,

After three years of Dean Smith I was still totally unclear as to what he was trying to achieve. What’s worse, is that the players also did not seem to know. A few weeks of Gerrard and not only can you see what Gerrard is trying to achieve, you can also see the team slowly developing to meet his requirements and we are also buying players that will enhance that further. We have been unlucky in each of our last two matches, neither of which we deserved to lose. Some of our play last night was really lovely. What he has achieved in a matter of weeks is not only impressive but really exciting. Just think back to how bad we were against Arsenal, Southampton and West Ham. We are levels above that already.

He’s got all of the attributes required to be very good. His strength will increase, which will really help him. If he develops the football intelligence to go with it, then he will play 50 plus times for England. He just needs to pull it all together. Hopefully it will come quickly with experience.

Gerrard likes Ollie. He said before game yesterday that he had probably been our best player since he had been manager. He is so key to what we do that it’s difficult not to see him starting, if fit. He’s never gonna be a great finisher but his other attributes make him a certain starter. Buying a centre forward with all of Ollie’s strengths, who is a good finisher and has greater vision would cost Grealish type money.

We don’t really know what’s going on. Wasn’t there loads of talk like this also going around when he signed his last contract? I trust Gerrard to be honest. Probably more than I’ve trusted a Villa manager in the last 25 years. Whatever the reason is that Carney didn’t come on, it’s because Gerrard did not think it was right. That’s good enough for me.

Or, he knew it was his fault and he was trying to divert attention away from it. Jamie Carragher made some comment about it on Twitter along the lines of “Every time I see Villa concede recently It seems like Konsa just stands there blaming someone!” Spot on.

Mings is much better than Konsa. I agree that we need a new centre back but Mings will still start.

It’s all about performance though. We were excellent tonight. If we keep playing like that we will do really well. Some of our one touch football was stunning. It’s really starting to come I think. We will win on Saturday

I genuinely thought he was good tonight. He’s never going to be perfect but he’s important to us at the moment.

I thought his performance was worthy of a bump. He did really well. Not sure how Dion rated McTominey above any of our midfielders to be honest.

We were robbed to be fair. How many bent decisions are we gonna get against Man Ure? It’s more than one every game. Utterly ridiculous.

Caught ball watching again for the goal. Don’t attack the ball and then wave my arms trying to blame someone else. Really has to be more aggressive in his play.

I suspect Targett will go in the summer and be replaced by a young left back to be understudy to Digne. Digne is a big upgrade on Targett. He is a much better player at both ends of the pitch. Supporting Villa hasn’t been this fun for decades.
