  1. I have a real issue with this formation. It puts too much emphasis on the 3 at the back and the full backs. They get too much time on the ball, these are not the players you want on the ball. You're also shoehorning Ings and Watkins into the team, neither knows where they are supposed to be. Watkins is not a player to beat 3 men and score. He would do better wide of a front three, if Ings and him are both playing.

  2. I think that’s a very fair assessment. I think he does well as a second option in attack on the left, backing up the left attacker in a 4-3-3 and overlapping, but has definitely struggled at times as THE wide option on the left.

  3. He looked good defensively yesterday. I just don’t think he’s a wingback. I highly doubt we’ll persist with this system but if we do, we’ll need better than Targett to progress. Im perfectly happy with Targett the full back.

  4. I haven't seen any reason to start Tuanzebe over Hause if we persist with a 3 man defense.

  5. I am not blaming Dean for this collapse either, but lets get something straight here. Dean or any other manager is responsible for the mental attitude of the team....He is the motivator and motivating factor.....He sets the tone and the culture of the team. He himself has admitted " The team mirrors the manager" and below you can see why. You can point to Shankly, clough, Saunders, Revie to name a few.....they set the standards to play to..... They are responsible for the hunger and will to win in a team....that what makes Leaders.

  6. Just got back. For me, its nothing to do with smith, tactucs or subs. 3 pathetic goals to concede within a total collapse - all in 10 mins. Players should hang their heads.

  7. Hahahahahahaha! On the bench… not even brought on… The rest of the team won without him… Awesome… Just… awesome!

  8. Looking at the positives: McGinn is in top form Buendia looked better Wingbacks played well Luiz looked good Ings steady as ever Konsa and Martinez fine. Looking likecSanson may finally have a path to regular playing time. Bailey and Traore back soon. It's only October. Time to rally around the players and manager and not level them with abuse.

  9. Weak mentality to this Villa side. 2-0 lead at home in the second half and they crumble. Unforgivable. The center of defense is a problem besides Konsa. I think subbing Luiz after his flight was perfectly fine. Can't blame Smith for that. Can't blame him for the Cash sub, cuz he was injured. Buendia still not ready to complete 90 minutes, so I was ok with Ramsey there. This was less to do with Dean and more to do with the players losing their nerve and concentration, and Wolves not giving up. Bitter loss but let's not tar and feather the manager for it.

  10. The issue is not is scoring goals, it’s the inability to control the game with possession. Mings and Konsa were tremendous last season. Having three at the back is the problem, we are yet to see if Sanson is the player to help us manage possession better. Mentally we crashed in the last 15 minutes which was reminiscent of the old Villa pre Dean Smith. As I said if we finish mid table, it’s not going to be look good for Dean Smith and our squad. Martinez would be gone as well as a few others.

  11. People act like variance isn't a thing. You can put the best players on the pitch and lose the game because you're unlucky. You can pick a team that doesn't work together but still win if you get lucky. Focusing on specific games doesn't help too much because there's too much luck involved - even the best teams with the best players and best managers don't win every game. We're still relatively early in the season, and ultimately Dean will be judged on his final league position. Unless we end up in serious danger of relegation, Dean's earned the right to stay until the end of the season - at which point the table won't lie. Not to say Dean shouldn't take any criticism but it's super weird how when we beat United people thought Dean was the messiah and when we lose a game like this people think he should go in the bin. Neither is true.

  12. He's just not half as good as he thinks he is. His distribution is very hit and miss, and now he seems to be falling back into his old habit of switching off and making mistakes, something he looked like he was trying to eradicate last season.

  13. I feel like Ings was a panic buy and we should have gone for a younger back up to Watkins. I would drop him and play 433. Ings is a good player but not good enough to change formation for.

  14. 4-3-3, Ings in Watkins out for me at the moment.

  15. Let's be honest, whether we're Smith in or out, it's been a pretty cr*p season so far. We're not playing particularly well, we don't look particularly creative or enterprising, and we don't seem to be getting any better even though we're 8 games into the season. People say we've had 2 brilliant performances and then two bad ones, I really don't agree with that opinion. Against Everton we were the inferior side until Bailey came on against an Everton team that had 3/4 of their best players out. Against Manure we had some good chances on the break but in the end had about 8 shots to their 30 odd and were reliant on them skying a penalty in the final minute of the game to get the win. To me those aren't brilliant performances at all. Our best performance this season was Chelsea away and we lost 3-0. All the others we either won with an element of luck or drew/lost and played poorly. Even the Newcastle game we got lucky with Wilson missing that clear chance early on and then winning a penalty but being called for offside. We really need to start getting more points but we also need to play a lot better. I think Smith has to take an awful lot of blame for the way we're playing because he's persisting with the 2 up front and 5 at the back and we're playing like shit. He's supposed to be an attack-minded forward-thinking coach but we look a bang average team at best at the moment and he has to sort it out asap.

  16. Great can be relative to his normal performances up to this point which have been mediocre at best. So yes, he can still be great without it meaning “he played like Kante today.” It’s also why I said there’s much more from him to come. Regardless, him and Luiz ran midfield today. We lost the game when they went off with Podence taking over the game.

  17. To be honest, we're all going to get covid sooner or later, even if you (like me) haven't had it yet. It is inevitable, and that is the implicit logic in removing restrictions. But it really does make a difference if you get vaccinated: (from: https://twitter.com/PaulMainwood/status/1449062935469379589 I know most people commenting in this thread have already been double jabbed. But maybe there are some lurkers out there who haven't, or maybe the commenters know somebody who hasn't, and I just really recommend you get yourself vaccinated, for your benefit and that of everyone around you.

  18. I don't think we'd usually lose the game from the position we were in, tbh. Not to say the performance was good but if you put the team we had on the pitch at the end of the game out against wolves during the next fixture you wouldn't really expect us to be 3-0 down after half an hour, would you? Sometimes good players inexplicably play badly, or get rattled, or have some bad luck. I think all three happened yesterday, and not all of it can be blamed on Dean. The team do have to improve their performances but I think some perspective does need to be maintained too.

  19. Whinge whinge whinge. I'm not defending yesterday's game. It was an awful result to throw a 2 goal lead away. I'm defending the usual ridiculous posts talking about him being sacked.

  20. Mings IS the shit defender at the moment.

  21. I don’t get why he wasn’t able to play the full 90. He hasn’t been injured for ages, I know he hasn’t started much and he had that pointless trip to Argentina but didn’t he play most of the cup match against Chelsea? How have we not got him to the point where he is able to complete a full 90? Surely other teams use their u23 matches for this reason. The Luiz sub was understandable, of course he was tired but I think the club have mismanaged Buendia if he was unable to complete the game. He was good yesterday.

  22. This. I feel dirty saying this but the Ings signing felt like something to placate the fans having lost Grealish. I’m not sure there was a plan behind it at all. Stunk of a panic signing.

  23. He gets far too much leeway. We are constantly having these conversations about him. The fact he’s our captain is honestly laughable.

  24. It really isn't reactionary. The manager sets the mentality. And today we genuinely looked like the Villa from 19/20. It's absolutely inexcusable losing the way we did. This is regression not progression.

  25. To be 2-0 at home, we should 100% be closing that game out, absolutely no excuses

  26. I’d 100% rather let Adama have a 1 v 1 than neves have a freekick even from 50 yards.

  27. It took a long time for Smith to finally bench Barkley. He usually is pretty stubborn with these things. Could take a big while persisting with this formation still.

  28. I love Smith but this change to two out and out strikers all of a sudden seams so desperate. Ings is brilliant and Watkins as well but together they just don’t work. He’ll have to cut his losses.

  29. So we were terrible and Wolves had loads of chances in that 80 minutes that we were terrible in . They dominated possession Martinez made numerous saves to keep us in the game ? No. Did we play great ?No We can be terrible and we have been terrible but today we were not terrible for 80 mins.

  32. Sunk a fair few hours into this now. It's absolutely brilliant. I would say that, even if you have an OLED Switch, don't bother playing it in handheld mode. The game is gorgeous and you need to have it full screen on the telly to really appreciate it. It's safe to say that Metroid is back.

  33. He was great today. Outside of getting muscled by Traore he was very active defensively, stole the ball multiple times and made some great passes. The best part is there’s still much more from him to come.

  34. Thinking about sacking Smith right now because he;'s not a top 6 manager is like me walking into the bedroom to tell the missus I want a divorce because I doubt her ability to secure a top 3 finish in Miss World

  36. This was way too reminiscent of some of our capitulations over past seasons. To be fair I'm not even sure if I blame Deano. Harsh reality is, we might have to start looking at some of our favourite defenders. The fine margins, are even finer now, we can't afford some of the schoolboy errors we make individually now Have people noticed that almost ALL of the goals we concede, are from unforced individual errors?

  37. Can't understand why Buendia is still being criticised, he's obviously just getting used to the people he plays with. He's improving each time I see him play.

  38. He and Dougie our best players by far. Them pair didn't deserve that defeat.

  39. Making subs for the sake of making subs. Brian Little talked about it biting him on the arse and never making the mistake again. I don't care about fatigue. You don't at 2-0 in total control take of midfielders and your spine of the team. Absolute clown today Oh and Mcginn was **** sensational today
