  1. Dean Smith appointed when 14th. Not convinced with this appointment (fair enough). promotion in first season. - still not convinced Kept team up following a complete squad overhaul and a keeper injury crisis. plus a league cup final - still not convinced 11th place finish including wins over Liverpool, Arsenal x 2, Chelsea and Spurs - still not convinced. Started the season with a win at Old Trafford for the first time in a decade - still not convinced. I think it’s safe to say anybody that is still not convinced by now will never be convinced. So it’s a pointless debate.

  4. Tactically he destroyed Jurgen Klopp last season and has given Tuchel a run for his money 3 times in the last 5 months. He also beat the Spurs, Arsenal and United coaches in recent times plus Ancelotti, Bielsa and Rafa

  7. 10th day now since I tested positive and have to say for about 6 days it is probably as ill as I have ever been. Fevers, aching all over, night sweats, feeling totally done in, no taste and no smell. I ended up in A and E on Sunday as my temp was 39 and blood oxygen 93 and I had feet like ice blocks and there was concern I may have sepsis. Last couple of days I have felt a little better but still have very little energy, no taste and smell and a bit of strange thing of when anything touches my skin that is colder than my skin be it clothes or bed sheets I am getting the feeling of wet instead of cold which is horrible when you are in bed as it feels damp. I imagine what I have had is considered mild and I dread to think how much worse it could have been had I not been double jabbed.

  9. There have been many empires all around the globe that have relied on slavery and persecution of others. That have gained land to gain wealth, at the expense of others. That have driven others out, or absorbed them and snubbed out their cultures. The Aksumite Empire is a personal favourite. Much of their wealth and influence came from the trading of slaves. They were African and already trading in slaves for hundreds of years before the Norman French Duke of Normandy iimposed his will, his law and his religion on the Anglo Saxons. I will not apologise for selected historic slavery. I will not apologise for the Irish Famine. I will not expect an apology from Normandy, I will not expect an apology for King Edward’s reign of terror. Doodlebugs were not the responsibility of Germans born in 1985. I will do my very best to treat everyone fairly and equally, to understand privilege and to try and counter it. I will always be receptive to education.

  12. I think some Villa fans should be more respectful towards Smith but despite what he constantly does, in the current manager role, he doesn’t get it from that section of Villa fans. Critical analysis is fine but some are being critical for the sake of being critical and not showing Smith any respect at all for what he’s done with us as others above point out. Why is Potter getting more respect than Smith whose also one of our own?

  14. Nick Drake was hugely UNDERrated for years. He sold next to no records when he was alive, and - although I was vaguely aware of him - like just about everybody else, I didn't really hear his stuff until the mid-1980s. And it's (overused word, but correct in this case) unique. Great songs, mesmerising voice, fantastic guitarist.

  17. Aston Villa is delighted to confirm the signing of Declan Frith. The 19-year-old wide attacking midfielder joins Villa’s Academy having impressed on trial over recent weeks for the Under-23s in Premier League 2. Frith also scored a hat-trick for the Young Lions in the Birmingham Senior Cup first round last month. Academy manager Mark Harrison said: “Declan left Chelsea at the end of August and has been on trial with us for a couple of weeks, playing in games against West Bromwich Albion, Coventry Sphinx, Stoke City and Wolves. “Having performed well he has signed a professional contract. He is a wide attacking player who can play both sides. “We look forward to seeing how he develops.” Official Site

  18. Unless I'm completely missing something, Potter has shown nothing whatsoever in the English game to suggest he's a better manager than Smith, he finished 10th in the Championship with Swansea, Steve Cooper immediately improved them, and then in his last two seasons with Brighton they finished 15th and 16th with 41 points, hardly an improvement on their finishes under Hughton. How can anyone even in their wildest dreams think that that makes him a a better manager than someone that won promotion from the championship when promotion looked impossible, then managed to keep that team in the Premier league having had to build an whole new squad, and then finished last season on 55 points, which is fourteen more points than Potter has managed in his two seasons with Brighton, and lets not pretend as some do that they're some sort of Brentford-esque club, they've spent hundreds of millions of pounds on their squad.

  20. Who? People talk about Potter’s nice football but not astute, and his team have finished 15th then 16th in the league…not great winning 9 league games per season. I don’t even know why Gerrard is mentioned, that’s laughable. Rodgers is a fantastic manager and one of the best. To Smith’s defence he took over a team struggling in the bottom half the Championship while Rodgers took over a team that had only won the PL two years prior to his appointment. Smith has out smarted most of the top managers over the last year getting some great results and tried different things. I think having a differing opinion to his decisions doesn’t mean he’s wrong or your wrong but he’s in charge and he’s been very astute and tactically very good against some top managers and against some not top managers.

  21. Almost… Albrighton and Carew are still a fans… They were pretty much forced out… They didn’t want to leave but had to carry on working… Football is their job after all! Mellberg is a fan… He wanted Champions League football but didn’t want to play against us… So he went abroad… But to be the dogs danglers of “your club”… and then to conspire with your agent and family to try and weasel out of a contract you signed with “your club” a year after signing it… Doesnt sound like someone who is a fan at all!

The one above it right up there on my Christmas list of 'please be true'. The Toon fans will be gutted, reading their forum they are looking for hundreds of millions to be spent on world class players in Jan and they are already calling Amanda's and PIF's ability as Bruce is still manager and a manager like Conte is not taking charge for the Spurs game

There's a lot of fingers in ears about the entrenched consequences of wealth being hoarded and appropriated by the powerful in the past. 27. This and your original post is fair. I think some come to the defence of Smith quickly because you get tarred with the same brush as the people in bold. I think your criticism is fair and you’re entitled to your opinion although I don’t agree with it.

  28. This is not a Starmer thing, this is a Labour thing. Corbyn, Milliband, Brown, Smith, Blair, Kinnock, Foot, Callaghan, Wilson, every single one of them would have been the same. Labour really is too invested in FPTP and is part of the problem not the solution to electoral reform That's Parliamentary Labour and constitutional Labour btw not the membership, much like the Brex** word, the big Unions are also on board with this, they even blocked it at the last conference when the actual membership was seemingly in favour I said it a few weeks ago, until Labour change their stance on Electoral Reform, I won't even consider voting for them. It's become that crucial an issue for me because without that no meaningful change will ever happen.

  29. Maybe they think Newcastle is a nicer city and able to attract better players. Also, the weather is cooler in the summer, Barcelona can be very hot at times and Las Ramblas has become very touristy with way too many pickpockets.

  30. I'd say its absolutely rampant. Basically no footballer ever tests positive, you'd be a fool to assume that means it's all clean. Just the opposite. No look policy firmly in place and it suits everyone to dope up players.

  32. Just don't get this, people talk about hat Smith has done since he got here as a way of explaining why they rate him to people who constantly say he's not good enough. It's not like anyone is dragging up ancient history or anything. I think the polar opposite of this, we've played several different formations successfully. Before we had one decent first eleven and the shape pretty much picked itself based on those players. No we have options and we've played 4-3-3, 3-5-2 and others so far this season. I have no idea why you would think Smith is lacking tactically, he is one of the the most tactically astute British coaches in football today.

  33. I’d say it’s imperative to acknowledge the wrongs of the past but it’s always going to be a power play. Sweeping generalisation but those with the power have often obtained (or inherited) it as a result of taking advantage of others. Their mindset will always be that they (or their ancestors) earned it and possession is nine tenths of the law. I do worry though that the world is becoming more and more polarised and the fight for indigenous rights will only reinforce another divide. Such a complex issue though. 34. I wouldn't blame them if they hadn't been sitting on their behinds getting paid for it during lockdowns. If the extra test per day that their getting asked to do is for a limited period of say 9 months then they are indeed rocket polishers of the highest order. Anyway going back to tests, I had mine at 8:30 in the morning and managed to drive the grand total of 2 miles due to some severe congestion f**keries. The examiner said "I think I'm going have to pass you" but you could tell by the way he was shaking his head he didn't want to. Fortunately there's no minimum distance covered (or at least there wasnt then)

  35. Agree with @mjmooney. You’re right about Oasis, although calling them a 2nd rates Beatles tribute band is more of a compliment than they deserve. Bit Nick Drake, whilst not my usual taste, is really great, just reading his name has got Hazy Jane II stuck in my head! Some great songs.

Fortunately she is pretty much symptom free and feeling ok but more upset that she actually has it. Double lucky, everyone else in the house is still testing negative with no symptoms…

  38. Automated cars cannot come soon enough. Just tell the app on your phone where you want to be and when - a car shows up and picks you up. Read, look out window or go to sleep until you arrive - all without having to deal with other peoples egos/aggression/mental illness behind the wheel. I drive to work along back roads to avoid the motorways. Absolute cretin right up my arse all the way home tonight. I slowed down to about 15 miles an hour to annoy him - wish I had that Bond car with guns in the exhaust.

  39. I watch Coppola's Dracula about once a year, and I always get a bit blown away by it. This is a good retrospective on it, and some of the same things that I appreciate about it. The effects work is incredible in it's simultaneous precise complexity and brilliant simplicity, and sets the tone and atmosphere for the whole thing as a modern take on a 30s horror. I get that it's an incredibly easy to mock movie - the dreadful Keanu performance, it's absurdly melodramatic and self serious, it has that very specific Gothic romance revival tone from the late 80s/early 90s that aged like milk - but the artistry and quality of everything else is so good I have to love it. Even with everyone hamming it up to the nth degree and the fact it's not really a terribly accurate adaptation and so on. It's **** great.

  41. Consistent results largely come from having better players than the opponents (or worse players than the opponents). Until or unless that is the case at Villa, results will continue to be a bit inconsistent. Manchester City and Liverpool are consistent because they are able to put out stronger sides than all their opponents. Norwich are consistent because they have worse players than the vast majority of their opponents. The notion you seem to have that our manager is let down by some kind of inherent flaw which leads to Villa results being “inconsistent” is, in my opinion, a load of nonsense.

  42. David Niven's Fridge. For those of you who aren't coffin dodgers, this was a Monty Python sketch. At a glitzy award ceremony David Niven is presenting an award. The host announces "Unfortunately David cannot be here today, but he has sent his fridge to make the award." The fridge is wheeled on, presents the award and leaves. Everyone acts as this is completely normal. It's surreal comedy at its best. At work some of the elders like to wind up the whippersnappers. A favourite is to drop old and obscure references into mundane correspondence and events. Today we got a new fridge. A colleague circulated an email saying that a long retired colleague called David Niven had passed away. In his will he'd left his former colleagues enough money to purchase something for the office. We'd used it to purchase a fridge. Later that day he called everyone together and announced that unfortunately David Niven can't be with us today. But he's sent a fridge. He then recreated most of the sketch as a solemn eulogy. I almost p!$$ed myself but managed to disguise it as emotion. Tomorrow it will have an engraved sign "David Niven's Fridge." If you like surreal humour Google "David Niven's Fridge." Genius.

  43. I bumped into the man, the myth the legend at Birmingham Airport today! Firstly, sweet jesus he is a good looking gentlemen. I introduced myself, said how exciting it is to be a Villa fan at the moment, then asked where he's flown in from. He said he can't say, but if Villa fans are excited now, the project has barely started. We then fist bumped - and I'll never wash that hand again.
