  1. Not sure why people are disappointed. We're effectively replacing Neil Taylor with Ashley Young. A Serie A winner and champions league player. And he can cover multiple positions. He's not being signed as a starter. He's not a "Waste of a squad position". He's exactly the kind of player you want in a squad position for a club like us. Experienced, can do a job in multiple position, not on ridiculous wages, free, and happy to be a squad member and not sulking that he isn't starting every week Edit: in fact you could probably say he's replacing Taylor AND Elmo

  3. Sorry to labour the point, but I have no idea where this idea that he’s an asshole with a bad attitude has come from. He dived to win a penalty 10 years ago, so what. The lad who might go on to be one of our best ever players, if he isn’t already, is an absolute master at choosing when to go down. Just because he’s one of the best ever at that as well doesn’t change the fact. And you can be damn sure he wouldn’t change his game if god forbid he ever faced us in opposition. Neither would I expect him to. Young was at the club what, 4 and a half seasons? And people are expecting him to have acted like he was a boyhood fan. Either way, it’s pathetic to hold onto it for so long. It was TEN YEARS ago. All the evidence regarding his personality points to the contrary, that he’s a consummate professional. I hate it when “woke goes wrong” but I genuinely think the colour of his skin is clouding some people’s judgement of him as a human being.

  4. That period where he was flying down the wing and putting in devastating crosses and corners, where Laursen Carew and Gabby were all knocking them in, culminating in THAT Everton game, one of the best periods we've had this millennium.

  6. It was one dive a decade ago. Time to let it go. You'll be happier for it. The good he did for us far outweighs that.

  12. I think Mourinho needs to transition to international football. Think he'd piss these tournaments with a squad like England's or France etc. His style is very suited to the international game whereas club football seems to have moved past it.

  13. Thought exercise for the jilted lovers people airing their legitimate gripes; Your team currently has only 2 senior full-backs, having released 2 of the squad's "older heads" in said position (the left-sided of which was - regardless of age - arguably not good enough for the club's current level). Your squad is the youngest on average in the league. One of your left-sided senior wingers is currently injured for an undetermined (but estimated to be lengthy) spell which required surgery. You have the opportunity to sign a player whom; knows the club, having enjoyed a highly successful previous stint. has a wealth of experience competing at the highest levels of club competition, having won (amongst others); the domestic league, both domestic trophies and a European trophy. provides cover down the entirety of the left-flank. represents a threat from dead-ball scenarios not currently present in the squad (save for one player who is less likely to make the starting line-up and may ultimately be sold). demonstrably still has something to offer, having just won Serie A. is available on a free transfer. Ask yourself; would this be a good signing? If it's not Ashley Young, if that dive wasn't part of this equation at all, would this be a good signing?

  16. Nope, nope, nope! Not for me. He seems to be at the heart of the good culture we have. He still had a lot to contribute on the pitch too. Where we are right now McGinn is way down the list of players to sell IMO.

  17. Yep. The whole notion of loyalty is bullshit, because fans are hypocrites with it. They only want good players to be loyal and they show no loyalty back. No one wanted Heskey or Mcleish to be loyal. No one demanded Lansbury remain loyal and fight for his place. I'm genuinely stunned there are people dead against this signing.

  18. I think the issue is a gap between the 18's and the first team 25's. Ashley will buy us some time, and raise the bar of winners around BMH, I think that is the essence of this deal.....The kids can learn from him.

  22. I still find it weird that whenever people mention Ashley Young, they talk about him as a fullback. I get it, he was forced to play there at United and it kinda stuck, but it’s a travesty that Ashley Young never left our club and became one of the best wingers in world football. At his best, out on the left for Villa, there can’t have been many better left sided forwards out there. He was electric. He’d square his man up, he could go either way and his crossing was on another level. The way he whipped it in with pace was a Strikers dream. Has he had a good career? Absolutely, but there is a part of me that thinks he should have gone on to be even better. I digress. It’s great to have him back and whilst he may have been brought in as back up for Targett and Cash, don’t write him off as our left sided forward. I have a feeling he’ll have one eye on that spot and even if he has a lost a bit of pace, he’ll be up and down that left side and could prove a real asset. UTV

  27. " May as well have kept Micah Richards " Indeed, because Micah Richards, with a blown out knee, who physically couldn't play anymore, is comparable to a 36 year old who just completed a season with the Italian Champions. " We have plenty of good coaches " Obviously not good enough, because it appears some of our fans know what we need/want, more than they do. " what we need is good young players, not a 36 year old. " Is the agreement that, upon his signing, the academy is eradicated, and all of our current young players are released? " Don't like this one at all. " Well obviously the manager does.

  29. Is this Matt Targett of which you speak? Players’ Player of the Season for 2020-1? Blimey, if he is only a reliable 6-7/10 player, I’m not surprised you are fearful for the rest of the summer because in your mind we must be needing a complete renewal of the squad in every position.

  30. I'm actually baffled that people don't understand this transfer. 90% of our signings are going to be under 25s with resale value but it doesn't mean we shut the door to opportunities like this. We get experience, squad depth, cover at multiple positions and an improvement on what we had before, all for no fee and just wages. He will get a decent chunk of games with the injuries/suspensions we are likely to pick up. We don't have European football, we aren't in a position to go spend 10-12m on specialist RB and LB as a backup to our current starters, this a great short term solution for 1-2 years. He's clearly in decent condition having just played 30 odd games for the Italian title winners.

  31. It's a good way of looking at it. Replacing Neil taylor with Ashley young. A fantastic player, some would say world class on his day that could have played for anyone at his peak. A true legend of the game. And we are gonna replace him with Ashley young.

  37. I just don't understand how Mings gets dropped after that performance against Croatia. I rate Maguire, and I think most non-Villa fans (not just bitter Bluenose types) would say he's usually a better player than Mings... but straight after an injury? Nah. I would stick with Mings and let him fight to keep that shirt. Sadly Mings seems to be a focal point for criticism, including amongst our own fans. I've never really understood it. Yes he has a mistake in him, but you can say that of pretty much any CB. People are talking about Maguire as if he's Bobby Moore, Tony Adams, Sol Campbell, John Terry or Rio Ferdinand. Come on. He's 28 and hasn't won a single trophy in his career. He's never made a PL team of the year. He's got 32 England caps. He's a good defender, but **** off is he good enough to walk straight back into an England side the minute he recovers from injury.

  38. Being a Villa/Inter fan (my missus is a massive Inter fan, and we've therefore adopted each others clubs - I definitely got the best deal), I've seen basically every game he's played since being over there. In his first season, when he joined in January, he was very good, and started basically the remainder of the season at left wing back. He got forward really well, and still looked very fit. He wasn't great defensively, but a Conte wing back doesn't necessarily have to be (he won the league with Chelsea with Victor Moses at right wing back, for example, and Hakimi at right wing back at Inter this season). This season, however, he got Covid in about October, and it really affected his performances, and he looked a shadow of the player he was prior to that. As a result, he didn't start anywhere near as many league games (just 16 in total), rotating with the likes of Perisic and Darmian. There's nothing to say that he won't get that fitness back, and if he does then I've no doubt he'll be a decent signing for a season, as he's very fit for his age - Covid withstanding. As for the man himself, I was fuming with that dive, but I definitely softened on him whilst cheering him on for Inter, and as others have pointed out, if it meant we could pump £10-15m of our budget in to a more pressing position rather than a backup left back, then I'm all for it.

  39. I feel like we've been quite rude here. Just waltzed in and slapped a £25m bid on the table? Not even weighed it up or prepared it? Didn't give Arsenal fair warning to brace themselves? Frankly I thought NSWE had more class than this.
