  1. These arguments as to who has had it worse are pretty pointless and have been done before. Tell the 80 year old who has lost a husband or wife of 60 years without being able to be by their bedside that they've had it easier than the 21 year old who can't go to the pub. Tell the lady who got told that she'd miscarried without her partner being allowed to go to the appointment with her that she's had it easier than either of the above. I'm not sure what it achieves trying to play one age group off against another and that's coming from someone who isn't a lot older than the group of people that you're arguing have made the greatest sacrifices of all. Everyone has had a pretty tough time of it some more than others in every age group across the country. Asking for a bit of common sense and some compliance with the social distancing regulations when restrictions are lifted isn't that much to ask in the grand scheme of things. Again I'd blame the venue as much as the people and given that the venue is now under investigation I guess the lesson should be learned.

  2. I have all the mental health issues with a few more on order from Amazon so let me just say this. I'm more upset that @Demitri_C wrote "I cant believe people want to stand outside in the freezing cold like sardines." than I am when people make any kind of "they need a head check" remark. Sardines don't stand . They are marine based. Penguins were right there man . They were right there ! It's like Steve Irwin died for nothing.

  4. This is another thing that ALL supporters think, that their club is the one that bucks the trend and will give a winless team three points, or allows a striker who hasn’t scored in 10 games to get a hat trick. I bet Liverpool supporters were thinking “Well Villa haven’t scored 7 in a single game for decades. Of course we wait until we’re reigning champions turn up and break that run and embarrass ourselves...” I bet Leeds supporters were bemoaning the fact they bucked the trend and let a Grealish-less Villa take three points “Oh well of course it’s got to be us that let’s them do that...” I bet Fulham supporters were equally thrilled to hear that Tezeguet got his first and possibly only goals of the season against them. “Typically generous of us” I suspect they were saying. “Nice of us to help him break his duck.” I could go on. These kind of things DO happen to Villa, but they happen to pretty much every club, more regularly than you think, people are only aware of Villa’s unwanted facts because you’re probably not interested in other clubs doing likewise. Go on other clubs forum if you don’t think so.

  6. So what you're saying is that the established Big 6 clubs who have been investing in their squads for the last decade (at least), while we were fighting relegation or in the Championship, have more squad depth than us!? Come on, listen to what people are saying here. Nobody thinks Smith has built this club into the new Real Madrid. But he's being held to standards that just aren't fair, intelligent or reasonable. They don't stack up with where we are in our development. People have got way ahead of themselves - largely because of his success.

  7. My favourite comment in this thread was someone saying you can’t say Smith has improved us season on season for 3 seasons because this season isn’t over yet. We already have more points than we did last season! With another 24 points left to play for! Sorry to use stats again, but Smith has clearly improved us every season, while integrating loads of new players into the starting lineup each summer. That has to count for something. I also would love to see us playing better football, scoring better goals, fighting more for possession in the middle of the park, and not being so reliant on Grealish. These are all fair criticisms of our recent performances. But the idea the project has stalled is just wrong, it’s completely wrong. That’s not me “under reacting” to bad results, it’s just a fact.

  8. Best season in years, young squad, great owners, best players tied down, only a small transfer window needed but some people want the manager gone, 10 new signings and complete change top to bottom?

  9. Have you never drank at The German Market? Its always baffled me. Perfectly good pubs in easy walking distance yet pay £6 for a pint of unbranded German lager whilst standing in icy conditions. No thanks.

  10. It hasn't, though. Relegation form is bottom 3, and we haven't been bottom 3 on form at any point. https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/premier-league/formtabelle/wettbewerb/GB1?saison_id=2020&min=20&max=31 You can play around with the start / end gameweeks here. There are a bunch of teams consistently below us - Southampton, Sheff Utd, West Brom, Fulham, Newcastle. Our form is basically mid table. What we've seen is a dip from Europe form early in the season to mid-table form later in the season post Covid / Grealish injury. And people are acting on here like it's a catastrophe, when it's basically in line with our expectations last summer.

  11. ‘The Pub’ = normality and socialising. Whats sad about wanting that? I think what’s sad is how the boundaries of normality have been tested so much in the past 12 months that we’ve ended up with an army of robots parroting the governments lines on what is and isn’t acceptable. But that’s just me.

  12. I don't get THOSE people. You know the ones. You're on a long journey down winding country lanes with no overtaking possibilities. Let's say in Cornwall. The speed limit is 60 mph. There are lots of straight sections where you could easily do 60mph, 55 mph would be a decent average speed down the whole road. They are doing 40mph the whole way. You get to a village, the speed limit reduces to 30mph. They speed right through it at 40 mph. I don't get those people.

  13. Isn't it? Who says? Judging other people by your own life and determining your own life to be "normal" is pretty common. What is normal to you isn't normal to others. Plenty of people go out at Midnight for a drink, you just don't know about it because you're in bed (or whatever else it is that you do at that time) Also claiming something isn't normal in the current times we live in is just a strange concept. Nothings frigging normal

  14. Do people normally queue up in the cold at midnight on a Sunday evening so they can have a beer in a cold, dark garden? Its pretty pathetic if you ask me.
    6 points
  15. Don't understand the mocking. People have had their normality taken from them for over a year. I wouldn't personally do what they've done, but I'm not going to judge or mock them for wanting a shred of their normality and humanity back.

  16. Our poor form started after we returned from the covid break and have played 15 times since then, we are 13th in the form table during our shit run and still picked up more points than we did in the entire 2015/16 season

  19. Didn’t seem that serious at the time but there was a moment where he grabbed Alissons leg and you thought either this guy is serious drama queen or he’s in a lot of pain. Then when you saw his tears you could tell it was bad. Can’t beleive he tried to carry on playing! Wish him well for recovery. For all his faults he gave everything at all times. You have to admire that.

  22. To be fair it was you under 40 scum what gone done got us into this darn situation. With your hoity-toity instagram cuisine and adrenaline based Tik Tok challenge lifestyles.. It was all fun and games in the avocado on toast days but you had to push it ! Then came the fry ups served inside a CHEP pallet and next thing you know it's bat souffle in a boot-ageddon. Then again my generation made all the pubs yellow.

  23. I have young lad, think he is 21, at my work place who I asked to do some work related tasks for me this week and it transpired he was taking Monday and Tuesday off. First thing I thought was I bet he is taking the time off as the pubs are reopening and I was right as he was meeting up with his mates. He has pretty much lost a year of his life in terms of socializing and when I think to when I was his age in terms of going out the weekend started on a Thursday night and didn't end until the early hours of Monday morning. I get that him and many others like him will have been desperate to meet up with their mates in a social environment like the pub. I think the young are owed a huge debt of gratitude, but I suspect they won't be getting it, as they have arguably made the greatest sacrifices for others in the main as they are the least affected in terms of getting ill from covid.

  24. I think From my own sphere and viewpoint of the world, going to the pub at midnight in freezing temperatures is madness. Other spheres and viewpoints are available and other people have them. As long as it's allowed in the rules our unfortunately elected government have set then I have no right to criticise anyone else's choices. I suspect that most people there aren't just off a shift or have no other time to go and I suspect that most of them are doing it to post it on Facebook or kind of virtue signal of crazy they are. But some might not be. Some will be so desperate for social contact with good friends they'll go ASAP. For some, midnight will be like 8pm to others. If wrapped up warm it's just like going out in winter where you'll have to sit in a beer garden. To judge people's choices by your own situation and values is pretty much the perfect definition of bigotry.

  25. Let’s be honest, it’s been relegation form since Covid restart. Thankfully we had a great first half of the season. So much work still to be done for Smith and co.

  26. Why? It's not a desperation to get shitfaced, I can do that at home. It's a desperation to get back to seeing my mates, having a pint and a laugh, and getting back to some sense of normality. Of course we could meet somewhere other than the pub, but a pint or two makes most things more fun. You wouldn't find me queueing to have a pint at midnight on a Sunday, but we have a table booked, and I can't bloody wait.

  28. I really don't get why people think he'd be a good footballer here when he doesn't do much at spurs, an arguably better side. A punt on free sure, but he won't be free will he? And massive wages just like Barkley.

  29. A fortune was spent in the Sherwood Era, the Di Matteo era and the Bruce era. Yes a fair amount has been spent in the Smith era. But for once, we are actually seeing rewards. We have done nothing but progress since he’s been here. If that’s not enough then there’s just no helping some Villa fans. We are on exactly the right course.

  31. Well the 9 teams below us all have <33% win rate this season. Southampton are shit without Ings. Palace are shit without Zaha. Newcastle are shit without Saint Maximin. Wolves have -10 goal difference compared with our +10. The remaining teams are just shit full stop. And then all the teams above us have a more expensive squad, with the exception of Leeds, who are 1 point ahead and we have a game in hand... It's hard to see a single team where a manager is outperforming us on a lower budget. Leeds is the only possible example really, and it's very debatable.

  32. Funnily enough. when one of our players gets injured, my first thought isn't "I wish that happened to someone else", it's usually "That's shit, wish that didn't happen", and just because you lampshade it, doesn't make the point less valid and your arbitrary choice a sensible question.

  35. The three or four times I've seen Dike he's looked good, I think he's more direct and agressive than Davis, and obviously has shown a better knack for scoring goals, and he's doing it in a Barnsley team who if you watch them play don't actually look that good, it's pretty much Dike's goals that has elevated them to their current heights. Also worth remembering that he's still only 20 years old. Presuming that we're not going to be looking to replace Watkins as the starting centre-forward, and are therefore unlikely to be looking to spend £40m plus on a player to come straight into the first team then I think it will be someone with a similar profile to Dike that we go for.

  37. I pick my nose a lot more than I realised. Whenever my phone tries to do face ID, it doesn't recognise me because I have my finger up my nose. I could try and kick the habit but I think it'll be easier to redo the settings so it only recognises me when I'm digging for green.

  38. When I was in my 20’s I’d often go out late on a Sunday night, most often getting bolloxed of my face on Es in a club, followed by an after party, and not get home until lunch time on Monday. Sometimes even getting dropped off at work still tripping. Now I’m an old man, the last thing I want to do is be out queuing for a pint at midnight. But young me would have been there. It’s easy to forget people are at different stages of their lives, we were all mental once, some still are. Good for them, as long as they’re not endangering anyone else.

  39. Yeah in fairness I was surprised when I checked how "good" our recent form was. But I guess we have a few draws and the wins against Southampton, Arsenal, Leeds and Fulham. What I think Smith has really fixed this season (possibly Shakespeare's influence, possibly Martinez's stellar form) is that we often pick up points against the run of play because of our solid defence. That's an important base we can build on with a bit more attacking talent.

  41. In the good old days, I'd have referred to a previous 5 pages as "a bunch of gay ass fagits who need a slap, the god damn retards" But this isn't the good old days, this is the "let everyone have their say and be kind to one another" days, so I'll just think it in my head without actually saying it. This is facts; 1. people are dickheads 2. only 3 people called Steve work on nights these days - stop referring to people finishing work and going to the pub at midnight - the Steve's just want to sleep 3. Have you not seen the videos of england fans throwing pints in the air when we scored? Most of those dickheads were at the pub last night, and their +1's - the abused girlfriends and wives who don't get a say in finance management/event management - "get your coat, we're goin for a pint, ya slag" 4. **** people who love the government 5. equally, **** the people who hate the government 6. A line has to be drawn somewhere 7. It was drawn too late, because the tide was already in - the knobs 8. Just do what you want to do, but PLEASE let me judge you for it, you trampy bastards 9. means no in German 10. a machine that helps your muscles I believe 11. Is summat to do with Stranger Things I think? 12. Let people do what they want 13. Let my judgement of them continue 14. refer to point 1, because that's what people are.

  42. There’s one for the things I don’t get thread! I’ll never understand why a group of people, typically under 35 to 40 in my experience, spend much of their time on their phones ignoring the friends they are physically with, presumably social media posting/messaging others who aren’t there. This was highlighted to me when out with friends a couple of years ago in a busy bar in Birmingham city centre. My wife noticed some women in their mid/late twenties all stood in an obvious group. 8 women were staring down at their phones or taking photos of their drink, whilst the 9th woman looked bored with no one to talk to. Why not focus on who you are with at that moment and save the chat with others until you’re more available or actually see them? You’ll also have something to talk about instead of hearing “I know mate, you told me that last night when you were out with your other mates”. I appreciate this makes me sound ancient!

  43. That might depend on how well they maintained social distancing. In regard to the current spat on this thread, I’m doubting if the turn of phrase ‘seek help’ was meant as a literal mental health slur.
