  2. Yesterday Liverpool brought on Thiago (£25m) and Mane (£34m), and left Oxlade-Chamberlain (£35m) and Naby Keita (£53m) on the bench. Virgil van Dijk (£75m) was out injured. We've got pretty much what we paid for so far, and attracted players of a level I would have expected for where we're at as a club. Whether Smith is playing the right system for the players currently at his disposal is a more pertinent question for me.

  3. You’re all **** insane. We are mid table having nearly been relegated last year, having miraculously come up the year before. Give it a **** rest. Smith has caused us to massively over achieve and this is the happiest we should all be as villa fans since MON left.

  5. Re: the above 'news' item: "What the reaction to Prince Phillip's death says about us". It's by **** ing Gyles Brandreth, natch, and it's all about the national 'outpouring of grief'. If ever there was a case of 'news as propaganda', this is it. Now, I'm not denying that there IS a great deal of pro-Royal hysteria going on. The fact that it bewilders and nauseates me in equal proportions doesn't alter that fact. But there is no 'THE reaction' to his death (and the associated media frenzy). There are reactions. It isn't just VT. A huge number of people are massively indifferent, even pissed off with it all. What does that say about us as a nation? Well it would probably disgust the flag shaggers, but the debate is there to be had. And the BBC is not reporting it impartially.

  6. My mum insists on asking me what I think of particular story lines in Coronation Street. She is convinced that I do watch it, and I just say I don’t to be contrary and appear ‘cool’. She’s actually got fairly annoyed at times, I’ve been told that I must watch it sometimes, everybody does, so why pretend I’ve never seen it. Saying that, we were having a chat once and there was some music on in the background, I can’t remember what, let’s say it was Hot Chip just for the sake of it. In a perfectly nonchalant voice, she nodded at the screen and said ‘what do you think of that, do you like it?’ I said it sounded alright, yeah, it was good, why? She said ‘I knew you would, because its shit’. We’ve always been close.

  7. Really bad luck for Trez, he’s not a perfect player by any means but he’s the kind of guy you want in your squad. He’s scored some very important goals for us and works his balls off for the team. You can see how much he cares about Villa. After having to watch numerous overpaid mercenaries over the years, Trezeguet’s attitude is most welcome. He deserves a bit more respect than simply saying he’s shit.

  8. To be fair it’s not four months, it’s not even three months since we returned on the 20th of Jan against Man City. I don’t know the reason but basically the same team. I can give some potential reasons like for some reason Covid hit us hard such that after we shut down has hit us hard residually. Our squad is small and run out of steam. Our squad doesn’t have enough quality because of size to have options and teams are finding us out. Jacks injury. Ross’ injury impacted him more than we thought. Traore is too inconsistent which his previous clubs told us. Ollie looks tired especially with no rest because of his style of play. Luiz is a 22 year old and like most younger players have poor form spells. McGinn loss of form. When Plan A doesn’t work we don’t have the players for a materially change to call Plan B. We have lost a bit of confidence and being a young team has hit us hard. We only have three creative players in Jack, Ross and Traore...see above...so we now don’t create chances. Smith and co learning at this level still. So is it any of the above, all of the above or more to it....I think it’s a combination of most of the above over the last ten weeks. We’ve still managed to win 5 of 15 games in that period despite the poor form. Our form is incredibly poor at the moment but the meltdown by some seems to be over the top.

  10. I think you're a bit negative IMO. Possibly because we could have won yesterday and gave away everything on additional time. It sucks and it's hard to stay positive. But you can still say we're rebuilding. Step one was getting a squad together. We had nothing. We had to get a new squad over a single summer. Done. Step two was surviving and getting a new more quality players in to settle in the division. Done. Step three will be to get in a bit more quality to develop further. It's going to happen. So I disagree on what you're saying. I think Traore was the wrong player right from the bat, but he's been better than I expected. Having wild card players is a nice thing, but what we needed was a top class hard working winger with lots of pace. When every single attacking player we got goes inwards it becomes a problem. So I agree Lange/Smith/Terry got that wrong. Just like we did with Wesley. It happens. It's also worth mentioning we're struggling a lot cause our world class playmaker is out injured. Finding new players to rotate with Grealish will be something we have to address this summer. It sure isn't Trez or AEG. Lange/Smith/Terry also failed with Barkley. But we are having a lot of traction with our youths, so there might be some young lads coming through. We will keep rebuilding season after season and we're not done by any stretch. Neither the wingers or the midfield were acquired for £ 30 million afaik.

  14. Maybe some can see the bigger picture and are not as superficial as to judge the manager or the team based on a couple of months of form. This season has seen massive improvement on last season and if we improve again next season then we are top 10. The manager has a huge part to play in that improvement.

  16. The board wanted stability and league status, they aren't going to ditch him. Smith has a great bond with some of the biggest players - whether Jack or Ollie, that isn't dismissed so easily.

  17. The attacking players are just shit, simple. In the first halves of the last 9 games we've had 3 shots on target, total. That's a pretty good guide to how anaemic you are as things tend to be tighter more cagey in the first half of games and we can't create f**k all. I'd normally have ago at Smith but i genuinely think the attacking players bar Grealish and Watkins are woeful. Even Watkins is actually pretty shit with the ball at his feet. It's painful watching Trezeguet run into players, El Ghazi just shoot from anywhere, Traore play a flaky pass/flick straight to the opposition, Mcginn mis-control and kick the ball out of touch. On top of the technical ability, the lack of strength of them all makes every action always feel 60/40, 70/30 in favour of the opposition. It feels like a fight to just retain the ball when they get into the opposition's half. That's the kind of players they are though and they just haven't been exposed because we have Grealish who a) is a world beater and b) demands the ball, carries the ball and takes more attacking responsibility than any other player in the league. It takes the responsibility away from them. I say this all the time and get stats thrown in my face about the 4 assists or 5 goals Traore and El Ghazi have got but their all-round game is not premier league level. They are two examples of players who couldn't get those numbers if they had to go up the pitch and cover the kind of ground most premier league players have to imo. I don't think there is much else Smith or anyone can get out of these players. In a way its kind of encouraging because it shows how good the back 5, Grealish and Watkins have been and that gets you up to 7 players. A good summer to address the attack would see us get to West Ham's level next year.

  19. Why? not as if well known managers have done that much different. Ancelotti is only 3 points better and started with a much better squad, Mourinho is only 5 points better and his team was in the champions league final just a few seasons ago before he come in and he's added a few players, Klopp despite being champions, until yesterday was only 5 points ahead and we had a game in hand but had a last minute winner to move 8 points ahead This thing that a named manager is going to make a huge difference is a myth, it certainly could by may not either. Just as easily these managers could spend hundreds of millions and do nothing and get sacked. Ancelotti has really do no better despite a better starting squad. Mourinho who costs a fortune hasnt done any better. We are into the second season of a rebuild, the owners are locking into contract Dean's players, I'd be extremely surprised if the owners are thinking anything but backing Dean in the summer with a decent spend. He's progressed the club season after season, there is no way they are going to let him go in the summer. How do you know Smith cant push us to the next level? we have no evidence either way to determine a yes or no on that. He's never been tried at the next level. This season he's had half a squad to try and get as high up in the league as possible and is achieving that. If he is given more players into the squad then he can be assessed on the achievements of that but until that point you cant judge whether Smith can take us to the next level or not. All you can do is say that each season in his two and a half years we have progressed materially league was from promotion to safety from relegation to possibly tenth in the league. Beyond that you are just speculating.

  20. Even if we lose all our remaining 8 games (which we won’t) we’ll still have improved on last season. I don’t buy into the idea of sacking managers who have delivered on the target that was set for them at the start of the season. What’s happened is he’s overachieved early in the season and given some people unrealistic expectations of what can be achieved with this squad once injuries, fatigue and suspensions start kicking in. He’s had a big Covid outbreak and a lengthy injury to his star player to deal with. Give him another summer to build and another season to show improvement. If we haven’t kicked on then we can start saying he isn’t delivering. But at the moment any claim that he’s “hit a ceiling” or “the project has stalled” is just factually wrong, since we’re ahead of where we were last season. All teams have runs of bad form. Our last two games are a 3-1 win and a narrow last minute loss against one of the best sides in the world. That’s not even particularly bad form is it?

  22. Who are these people who spend money that they earned on flowers, then get in a queue to leave them for a man they never met, and who lived a life of privilege from taxes paid by the same working people? It's incredible brain-washing. Miraculous. I know I've lived in the US since '99 but it just looks absolutely ABSURD. Surely every time one of them dies (or is accused of being a pedo) it should prompt the conversation about dissolving the whole bloody ridiculous institution. They'd all be loaded with all of land they still own.

  24. I have to admit I’ve felt like this lately with yesterday being the worst. I’m not looking forward to the remaining games when looking at who we are yet to play. First half of the season it felt like we would give any team a good game. It doesn’t feel that way anymore. I’m not blaming Smith and I’m happy with the season as a whole and understand we’re a massive work in progress. But I would be happy for it just to end now.

  25. But Bruce spent more during his time with Xia than Smith did with NWSE in securing promotion. And Bruce was here when they took over. So the Bruce the pauper card doesn’t fly. Given their spend where do you think Villa should be in the league? By the same reasoning, where should Arsenal be? Sheffield United, they spent more this season than last season, where should they be compared to last season? Spurs, have spent similar to us in the past couple of summers, their league position should be what? You seem to think we’re not aware of the amount spent. We are. We’re also aware that the squad was practically non existent when Villa came up. I asked this a couple of weeks ago (not to you specifically), what would your first xi be with the players that were at our disposal at the end of the 2018/19 season? Tell me, did you go with Bree or Elmo as centre half with Chester? Or did you extend Elphick’s contract? That summer transfer window, Man Utd spent £50m on a right back with ONE season under his belt. That’s the market Villa were entering. Could some of the money have been spent better? Yes, I suspect it could, there’s always going to be a bargain that you look at elsewhere and think “ahhh, why didn’t we look into him?”. But overall I think the return for the spend is probably about right. A few of these players are better than what they’ve been showing in recent weeks/months, but I also suspect another manager couldn’t get much more out of them.

  30. Fulham, Brighton, Burnley and West Brom have all beat and/or held " The Champions ", we beat them 7 - 2, before they went to absolute shit ( relatively ). Sometimes people should just admit when we chucked a game away ffs . We didn't get beat because we were facing " The Champions " and they were so good. As many a time this season, most of our losses/draws have been down to our own shite decision making and/or unforced errors. Leeds being outplayed, carved open etc and still getting a result would have been praised on here, if it were us, due to opposition. We weren't even being carved open, we were giving them the ball poorly. The point still remains, making it seem like we have " no right " to get a result due to who we are playing is false representation of the ACTUAL match. As I said in an earlier post, I'm pretty sure most of us expected nothing from the game prior to it. Will state again, I'm happy with our overall progress, but the comments are purely based on a game by game basis.

  32. Bringing him on was a ridiculous decision today. He's been shit for months, and in fact for all but three and a bit games. He's not our player, you would hope he's never going to be our player, so what was Smith hoping to achieve by bringing him on? Then on the other hand you have Keinan Davis, who came on and did very well last week, not being given another chance at all. I'm no big fan of Davis, but surely he warrants a chance, having done well last match, above somebody who is unfit, and has a bad attitude to go with it? It's a similar sort of idiocy and hoping for the best that saw Smith persevering with that horrendous bellend Drinkwater last season. A blind man on a galloping horse could see that he was all washed up, but Smith ploughed on regardless.

  33. Thought he was the best of our midfield 3. Some lovely steals and generally a good job screening the back 4. His passing was better than most and I only remember him turning the ball over once. I would have kept him on the pitch and swapped out Traore for, well, anybody really.

  41. This is still our biggest problem. None of our midfield have the confidence/ability to carry the ball forward. They give the ball away too easily, particularly SJM. The are awful at pressing, intercepting, tackling. They do not seem to anticipate the play very well, particularly when it comes to picking up second balls! They also love to give away needless free kicks in dangerous areas. All very frustrating!! I am happy to have SJM and Marvelous in the squad but neither can be regular starters next season. I think Luiz is good enough to start but as an 8 not 6. We need to sign a quality DCM and another 8. If you have ball carrying 8’s and really good wide forwards then you don’t need a 10. This is how I would like to see us play. We would need a better RF though as the current options are way too inconsistent.

  42. I just hate Zaha's attitude. He's always the victim. Even yesterday he stuck his finger in Mason Mount's face, so Mount pushed him away only for Zaha to kick off at him about it. Got to be better options out there for the sort of money Palace, and Zaha, would want.
