  1. Working from home for the past 9 months has its obvious benefits like saving money on fuel, knowing when you go to the toilet twenty other hairy arsed blokes haven't blasted last night's curry down the pan before you settle down......but the massive bonus that has only just dawned on me is not having to put up with the "whacky and zany" office festivities like the shit buffet where everyone brings in happy shopper quality cocktail sausages, quiches, crisps and rola cola.......secret santa where the limit is £5......five effing quid.....the quizzes where you guess which boss from the baby photos emailed around along with other shite questions....and everyone is wearing a xmas jumper, bought from the market and is 100% static to the touch......and so on.... Yes, i am a grumpy old git ! So what ?!

  2. @HanoiVillan You were worried about the Oxford vaccine raising some red flags? I think you must have misheard, you got the flag bit right though...

  3. Obviously a gag but still Ben Bradley is one of those people that, were he to unfortunately be hit by a car and killed, you'd erect a statue to the car.

  4. An amusing thing that is now happening in America is the following: With their shiny new bigger majority on the Supreme Court, conservatives have managed to get rulings that overturn restrictions on religious attendance in the name of virus prevention. So now you can go to church and spread the virus to your heart's content, and there's nothing the government can do to stop you. The Pope then published a suspiciously prompt op-ed in the New York Times encouraging people, in a very mildly veiled way, to actually listen to what public health experts are saying and not to put other people's health at risk. And now catholic Republicans are *extremely* butt-hurt about it: From the replies, this gem:

  5. See, I genuinely don't care about him looking a bit scruffy. It's the same as Michael Foot's duffel coat, Corbyn's wonky glasses and Abbott's shoes. It's all irrelevant, provided they can do their jobs. Blojo can't.

  12. Indeed. Though as @bannedfromHandVsays, it's clearly deliberate - a false impression for effect. Another little signifier of untrustworthiness, perhaps?

  15. Easiest way is just to cut into small pieces and shallow fry for 10 mins on medium heat to get the edges crispy. If it's plain tofu in water then you'll need to wrap it in about 20 pieces of kitchen roll and press it hard between your hands to get as much of the water out as possible. If you make a marinade then the longer you leave it (overnight) the more flavour it'll soak. The picture above is after mixing it with cornflour so it gets a crispy outside when fried. Done right it gets very close to fried chicken. Most of the time though I just get cauldron smoked tofu pieces and fry them as is for 10 mins.

  19. I think a lot of the issue is that part of the spontaneity has been taken out of the game in exchange for... basically nothing except errors being made in slow motion rather than real time.

  20. Villette - Charlotte Brontë The Master and Margarita - Mikhail Bulgakov Ulysses - James Joyce The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle - Haruki Murakami Petersburg - Andrei Bely Crime and Punishment - Fyodor Dostoevsky Manhattan Transfer - John Dos Passos Bleak House - Charles Dickens Mrs Dalloway - Virginia Woolf In Search of Lost Time would be in there and near the top but have only read the first three volumes. Probably some obvious ones I've missed, and maybe some recency bias as well.

  21. Watching Top of The Pops on BBC4 and Faith No More have been on. My wife says never liked them, as they were hair metal. Don’t worry chaps, she looked as if she enjoyed the 10 minute lesson on what is and what isnt hair metal. She won’t make that mistake again.

  22. Not sure what the deal with is with us and keeping scores a secret, ours in the only result in the second round of the premier league cup that's unkown, and the only reason we know the score from the first round of matches is because one of the players put it on their instagram. Other clubs have clubs have been updating through their official channels, like twitter and club website. Same with the England youth teams playing a bunch of frienlies against club sides in the international break, ours was the only one where the result was never published.

  24. This vaccine increasingly looks like an embarrassment, so it's completely natural that the government would want to stamp the flag all over the project. It's a perfect metaphor, really.

  25. A long time ago I was if not fluent in German, at least capable of conversing ordinarily - i.e. not having to think in English and then work out the German, but just speak in German without having to think. if that makes sense. I've lost it now, mind, though can still read and understand a reasonable amount. Maybe 15 years ago or more, I did the same as you and had a go at Italian (as I used to go there with work frequently) using an internet gibbons - I think it was called "Memrise". It was OK, but I sort of tailed off, as I decided going for a walk at dinner time was better. If this clampdown goes on much longer I might get back into the German stuff.

  26. People that put empty things cartons, jars bottles etc... back in the cupboard/fridge, because they’re too lazy to go outside to the recycling bin. Even though I’ve moved it to the back door, literally less than ten steps away. Then when questioned they say “oh I didn’t realise it was empty”. My 18yr old stepson has now taken to leaving the tiniest dregs in the bottom so he can claim it’s not empty, and therefore not his responsibility.

  27. It’s that type of minimisation of issues that deflect the importance. Ask families and friends who have lost family members to drunk drivers and ask whether they believe it’s important? Maybe try putting yourself in the shoes of those who have lost family members to drunk drivers.

  28. I think Mings wouldnt work with him if he felt strongly about it, he is a strong character and had no issue criticising the FA chief. I think Terry isnt a racist, he has played with a lot of black players and none to my knowledge have accused him of racism BUT I think he did say that comment to Ferdinand at the time

  29. And so it should. Rather like Jack was clearly driving his car pissed and smashing into surrounding vehicles there was not enough to convict in a Court of Law, I'm pretty sure Terry said what he said. Hopefully for both of them it's a lesson which will make them better human beings in future.

  31. For what it’s worth, hypothetically, if I was ordering something and after I typed in the delivery address it came up with “You can receive your order in two days, however we’re scheduled to deliver other goods in or near your postcode in five days time, would you like help the environment a bit and receive them then instead?” or words to that effect, more often than not I’d select to receive my order later. I’m sure there are reasons why that’s difficult and impractical but anyway, it would be a feature I’d be ok with using.

  32. BBC reporters still claiming that the country has 'maxed out its credit card', and stating this as economic analysis, even though a national economy has essentially nothing in common with a household one. They are still doing this 12 years after the financial crisis:
