January transfer window is like 1.45am in an 80's nightclub before the DJ plays the smoochies. Everyone is desperate, all the decent quality has long been snaffled up. All that is left if the dregs, but you convince yourself that they look far better than they really are. You wake up the next morning, look at what you've got next to you and think. OH MY GOD, WHAT HAVE I DONE? It's just not a place you want to be unless you are absolutely desperate. We need to snap up all the hotties now whilst they are available before we get the beer goggles on.13 points

My OH gets very annoyed with me not knowing who people (particularly kids) are. Mainly because I don't give a shit. "Oh look at this picture of Dom, hasn't he got big?" "I don't know who that is" "It's Lyndsey's son!" "Who's Lyndsey?"12 points

28 goals and 22 assists in 146 games since joining, we need better for the starting eleven but he's been a very good signing for us.12 points

There's a real lack of credit for what Sheffield utd did compacted the box, let us have it out wide knowing they could cope with crosses, let Hourihane and Luiz have it 40 yards from goal knowing they weren't picking anyone out from there, double up on grealish, let Watkins have it away from goal rather than in front of it, cash and target had a lot of the ball but no options on because everyone and every bit of space in the box was covered And that's not a case of wilder out thinking Smith The only tweak I would have made would have been let target and cash swing it in earlier from deep and test the theory that they would have coped with crosses but who on the pitch could you throw in the box as a gamble? Get mcginn and grealish in there looking for headers? The play it out wide draw them in deep lay it off to the edge tactics suited the midfield we have11 points

Rather sad that a handful of fellow Villans could get pissed off enough at some fellow Villans having a bit of childish fun that the thread has been closed. Not every one has to read every thread and every post, getting pissed off at this, mmmmm, can't imagine how these people cope with every day life. This is not a rant, merely a personal observation.8 points

The Barkley link is legit, not to say it will happen but it is 100% legit. Loan with option to buy, wages part funded by Chelsea. I thought our game against Sheff United showed how much we need a number 8 and Barkely could be a very shrewd addition in my view. I like Loftus-Cheek or liked, personally I think he is crocked now so wouldn't go for him personally and I think we would be wary after Drinkwater but Barkely, if we can do it would be a good move.6 points

Don't think Grealish would have signed a new deal unless we would be strengthening more than we currently have. Expect to see at least another attacking signing and hopefully a CM as well. Ideally a CB as well but I'm confident we'll get at least two more signings.6 points

Would seem a bit premature to get rid of a player who has only been here for 9 months , especially with him only playing for 3 of them. He hasn't been great but showed enough pre lock down to indicate he may be useful if we get an injury or two.6 points

depends what bits of each you are imagining i guess. It may be the height of messi, work rate of bolasie, humility of ronaldo and the understanding of visa laws of ronaldinho6 points

Theres more to a virus than just it's lethality. It appears that it seems to have longer lasting effects in some people that are otherwise healthy. I'm not sure you can just ignore that.5 points

This all sounds like just lies. I'm assuming "stats" are purely goals and assists here? Because I'm almost certain Hourihane - our #1 set piece taker - will do better there than John McGinn. However, in almost every single other aspect of the game, McGinn is simply a better player. I have nothing against Hourihane, but if it wasn't for the fact that he has such brilliant set piece delivery, he wouldn't be at Aston Villa. He offers very little else.5 points

Seems to be a lot of Hourihane hate in here today. For a player that’s played a key part in getting us back up and stayed up, that bemuses me a little. Sure he’s got his limitations and we should aspire to replace him with better quality, but he should still be an important squad member for us. His output in goal contributions shouldn’t be ignored.5 points

Hes right, but calling your players, in effect a load of shite is hardly gonna raise morale4 points

I though he was alleged to be fat But seriously he is here. He got a bad injury, couldn't access full medical/physio assistance during lockdown, came back played a few games but was unsurprisingly not anywhere close to match sharp, then we had another break...then 1 game back. It's "normal" for players to take a while to get back match sharpness and so on after lay-offs. He'll get there.4 points

Your cynicism is probably well-warranted. Interesting to compare the hand-wringing over Christmas that they're going through months in advance on the one hand, with announcing people couldn't celebrate Eid *the next day* a few weeks ago, on the other.4 points

It seems there is no right solution for dealing with the situation. Perhaps it’s time to just accept that it exists, do what you can as an individual to avoid catching/spreading it but to get on with life again as ‘normal’, accepting that sadly some people will die because of it (as we do for a range of other illnesses and ailments).4 points

Can't you see he's wasted out wide? He doesn't get on the ball anywhere near enough. He needs to be given a free role and he will get even better. We need two out and out wide attacking player who have pace to get in behind the defence and we need Grealish pulling the strings behind them. Trust me, that's the way forward.4 points

Great keeper, right back with a solid debut, record striker signing. All of those are starters. This is a crazy window, so if we added just another attacking midfielder like Rashica or Sarr, I'd say this is a very good window whichever way you look at it.4 points

"Wow he can't properly place a mask on his face, imagine him trying to aim shots or passes if he can't even manage that. Proof of a terrible signing." - VillaFella224 points

This was taken after one of the greatest ever games at Villa Park. Fifty years ago, we beat a Manchester United side that had lifted the European Cup only 2 years earlier, which had included Denis Law, George Best, Bobby Charlton and a young Jimmy Rimmer, 2-1 in the League Cup semi-final 2nd leg in front of 58,667 fans, on 23/12/70 (what a Happy Christmas we all had that year!) :4 points

I've done a little digging this morning and the lad in question, was our mascot after all. His name was Andrew Pugh and he was from Lozells. What a day for the lad! He went on to become an accountant and sadly passed away in 2011. HEITS. I obtained the above information from the Birmingham History Forum (link below). Here are another couple of photographs from his special day: https://birminghamhistory.co.uk/forum/index.php?threads/villa-park-1957.29975/4 points
