  2. It’s our team, your team, my team get behind it , why not ? There is group of players preparing to go out and perform against one of the best squads in Europe fully expecting to be booed off at half time if we are behind and then vilified by members of boards such as this. Yes they are paid well but some support wouldn’t go amiss.

  3. No injuries, no suspensions and Citeh are very, very good. For me, on the day, those are the things that matter. The season on the other hand is altogether more complicated, more worrying and more difficult to predict. Playing without a striker is difficult, there's no one running the channels and no one to lump it up to - there's nothing simple for the back line to do with the ball - we have two lines of midfielders - a back line with Luiz, Drinkwater and Hourihane and then a front line of El Ghazi and Grealish. You can't lump balls up to the front line of midfielders from the back easily - you have to find the perfect pass just to get them the ball surrounded by defenders - so all the centrebacks can really do is try to find each other or try to find the deeper line of midfielders - the problem with that is that because there's no striker and no one running the channels, the opposition can press that deeper line - which means that they're always facing the centrebacks - which means they usually give it straight back to them. That's trouble - you've got a whole team that are like a circle facing inwards - everyone is pointed at Tyrone Mings - the ball goes to the back three then maybe along the back three, then into midfield where it comes straight back to the back three. There are only two ways out - either El Ghazi or Grealish beats three men, or one of the full backs storms forward into a high wing position. Neither of our full backs can do that. You're asking Grealish and El Ghazi to beat three men just to get into the opposition half. It's a mess, and it's a mess that means our centrebacks spend far, far too long with the ball - the game is played on our back line - and as you'd expect, sooner or later we make a mistake. Man City will devour your mistakes. Our entire game plan was based around frustrating them for as long as we could - unfortunately they're too good for that - Taylor got sucked out of position and Mahrez had the quality to do something about it for their first - from there, the shape we were playing was of absolutely no use to us at all. After the first goal we should have taken Hourihane off for Vassilev. Individually it's hard to pin anything major on any of the back three or the keeper - I'm sure there are individuals to blame for each of the calamities we gave away - but ultimately if you defend as often as we did and you can't get out, those mistakes will happen. The full backs aren't enough for this league - if we stay up, both of them need to go in the summer. I'm surprised we didn't see Guilbert. In midfield Luiz was sort of okay - he looked like he could see the problem and was the only one trying to make the long bursts into the corners to give us something to aim at - Drinkwater looked reasonably tidy in what will have been his most difficult debut - Hourihane for me was our worst player today, he did nothing either on or off the ball. For me there was one too many in the middle of the park and that one was the one that didn't get involved. I thought El Ghazi did okay - he worked hard on trying to hold up the occasional long ball and beat the three men around him, he deserved his goal. Jack worked hard too, but it was a day that really did look like Jack Grealish and the darts team from the local trying to beat the pros - the boy needs help and he needs it quickly. I'm not going to blame the manager, even though I thought he could have changed the shape earlier - there's only so much that can be done given the limitations of this squad. The remains of this season (and our long term future) will not be determined by how much we can get out of this group - it'll be determined by how much we can strengthen this group. I'm not sure I've ever seen a team with a bigger, more obvious problem or one with a solution that can be so easily described - we buy a striker or we go down. We might need more than one, we could definitely do with more than one forward player - but if we don't buy a striker and a good one, we're done. We can't play without one. The problem is very simple. No injuries, no suspensions and Citeh are very, very good. That'll do for today. Today won't define our season. This week will; this week might define the future of the club under this ownership group. There is some serious work to be done.

  4. The comeback was on but the clock was against us.

  5. This is now becoming as important a week for this club as I can remember. We buy a striker this week or we go down - I really believe it's that simple - and if we go down, we might not be in this position again for a decade. Ideally, we need three attacking players and a left back - but if we don't get one striker, someone who can run the channels, be available for the long ball and give us an "out" - if we don't get a striker that lets us be a football team, one that plays in a normal football team sort of way - we're done. Down. Finished. FFP? Don't care. Overpaying? Don't care. If we don't get one that can help, we could be out of the top division and away from the money for years - it could be a £500m problem. Buy a striker this week or die.

  7. I’ve been watching Drinkwater - a couple of bad errors but not hiding. he may be decent given a few games to settle in. Not his fault he’s been thrown into one of the toughest tests of the season. I’m reserving judgement

  8. If we stay up, offer him a massive contract and demonstrate intent through squad investment I don’t think he’ll go. He loves this club every bit as much as we do.

  10. If we don't sign a striker with either proven ability to score at a decent level or with talent oozing off him, put a fork in this season, it's done. Ideally that needs to be 2. And we could do with a winger with ability as well. You could maybe get away with a single decent striker and a wide forward who can fill a winger or striker role. Everything else is kinda academic at the moment. It'd be nice to have a better LB, we could do with another CM to upgrade on Lansbury. But we're ****ed without a striker and we need another reliable outlet besides Jack, which is a wide man given our 'style'. Don't get at least 1 good striker, though, and we're ****. Completely ****. We were short anyway, but now we're completely bollocksed.

  11. The more you think about it, the more laughable the striker situation becomes. Did we really think signing one striker, a young lad from a poor league, was enough to survive? I keep hearing we were close to signing another on deadline day but what utter drivel, there should have been 6/7 options available to fall back on even if that were true. This isn’t even taking into account the striker they did sign is, at best, a work in progress and at worst, not good enough for the championship. And now he’s injured. Its Jan 12th and we don’t have a f***** striker at the club who is even remotely good enough for this level. Its an absolute shambles. I’m sorry, it is.

  12. Why’s everyone going so mad at Conor? He wasn’t even playing. At least criticise the players who were on the pitch.

  13. Ultimately, our season won't be defined by games like this. Most of us expected to lose. Its the games against the teams around us that are vital; Brighton, Bournemouth, Newcastle, etc. Win those and we can stay up. Possibly.

  17. Felt for him today, did all he could with no support, playing in a position not natural to him. In what is the faintest silver lining of all time I was glad for him to get a goal in the end. Absolute bedlam when it did too, I'll be remembering that one for many years to come.

  35. Giroud had only scored five league goals in the last three seasons, and plays for a much better attacking team than Benteke, and plenty wanted us to sign him. It's far too simplistic to look at Benteke's Palace record and just presume that he's lost it and would be a bad signing, put most strikers in that Palace team and they would struggle to score goals. The truth is he's probably somewhere in between, not as good as when was last at the club, but better than the last few seasons would suggest, and certainly a good option for our squad and someone who could get us some vital goals between now and the end of the season.

  36. For me, in order, in this window we need: Striker ____________________ Left Winger _______________ Right Winger______________ Left Back_________________ Striker____________________ Goalkeeper_________Reina Midfielder______Drinkwater It's nice to get as many as we can - but if we don't get a striker, nothing else will matter.

  38. We just need to bounce back. Watford lost 8-0 to City and Southampton lost 9-0 to Leicestor and both are above us now. The way we play in the next game will show the character of the team.

  41. I said last night 'I don't think he'll be starting games any time soon', and people piled in to say 'I expect him to start tomorrow', and fair play they were right and I was wrong. Now we're seeing why I *should* have been right. How was he ever going to be ready to start, when he's barely kicked a ball all year, and can't have had more than 3 training sessions with his new teammates? We've stuck him straight in as if we've signed Pirlo FFS.

  42. Like the sentiment but just think we're kidding ourselves. He far too good for us and will be regardless of investment next season, he is visibly frustrated here at times on the pitch, owes it to himself to play with much better players.

  43. Just how small would they have to be?

  44. Let’s face it, if Benteke was any good these days, no way would Hodgson be contemplating letting him go. Hodgson is no fool, he’s experienced enough to know a good striker when he sees one, and he desperately needs more goals at Palace. This is all just a lot of romantic nonsense in my view.
