  1. Is it Saturday yet? This one game a week business is rubbish!

  2. Whether they are involved a lot the first few matches or not, means absolutely nothing. You are talking about young people, maybe not speaking the language very well, moving abroad for a new job. Some might simply not be match fit. Some might have other issues. Some might simply need a bit more time than others to get ready for football in the toughest league in the world. A sensible approach would be to ease them in slowly in a tempo that suits them, and that's probably what's going on.

  6. He had a contract which ran out at the end of June. He knew that, the club knew that. It would be highly unusual for both GW and AV to not, either of them, have any idea that "you know what. this contract runs out in a week or so, let's just sit here and not mention it to each other, and then act all surprised. So basically, for him to have not been told, he'd also to have not asked directly or via his agent "er, new contract at all?" I agree that if the club were to have somehow avoided telling him that the contract was not going to be renewed, if he had not asked, if his agent had not asked, then that's poor communication by all concerned, but I don't buy it that he was in the dark because of some club (in)action. It would be nice to think that he and the club (manager, CEO) would have talked, just to say thanks and 'bye, but I don't at all accept he was accidentally or deliberately kept in the dark.

  9. Tidy finish. I think he'll end up as a striker rather than a winger - he can score goals quite instinctively but his crossing and passing are both weak.

  11. Today’s the last day of a diet that’s ended up getting me probably the leanest I’ve ever been. I’m pretty sure that I’m well into single-digit % body fat. I’ve gone from around 17st10 to 15st12 at 6’5. I wasn’t exactly fat before so some of the weight loss is probably muscle but I’ve adjusted my training to try and keep as much as I can. I’ve learnt a lot and am obviously pleased with the results and the shape I’m in but on the whole, it’s been a pretty horrible experience that I’m not sure is worth it. I’ve been constantly hungry, thinking about food, sleeping badly, pissing constantly and feeling light headed. (I don’t want to complain, though - voluntary starvation for aesthetic goals is a textbook first world problem and I’m fortunate to be able to do it by choice.) The hunger and the body’s demand to be fed has been the hardest part. I’ve probably not hit my actual calorie goal once and have eaten something I shouldn’t have pretty much every day. I’ve also had a couple of weddings and nights out where everything’s gone out the window. It took me a while to see results. I looked a lot worse for a while before I got better. Interestingly, I really started getting results when I incorporated a couple of weekly refeeds. I cheated too much in the first few weeks so had to step things up to a level I wouldn’t usually. For the last few weeks I’ve been aiming for a calorie deficit of around 1000 per day and topped it up with 500cal daily cardio. It’s completely unsustainable in the long run but has got me results in a relatively short space of time. The next time I diet, I’ll plan it better. I’ll do it more slowly and less extreme, have diet breaks and use refeeds earlier on. Off on holiday tomorrow so all the good work will probably be undone in the space of a few days, if not before I leave Birmingham Airport

  12. I decided when she was born, I wasn't going to push Villa on my little girl, so haven't bought her any clothing and stuff. If she wants to like football and Villa then I'll let it happen naturally. A tough one possibly though, living in Wiltshire. Well I say that, I have subtly being planting the seed. I've made sure she likes lions and she started roaring when she sees the badge. The last couple of nights she has gone to bed with a blanket with the badge on and has added to her very limited vocabulary and said "Villa" Looks like that seed is starting to grow

  13. No way! So the guy who does all the cinema trailer voice-overs is a Villa fan? Love it! If the movie work ever dries up, there's surely a match day role for him at Villa Park Just imagine him reading the teams out! (You would end up thinking the entire fate of mankind depended on a Carabao Cup 3rd round tie).

  15. I actually agree regarding Taylor having a good game. IMO one of the reasons he and Elmo had decent game though was because at no time were they really stretched. Especially in the second half. What I mean by that is that neither got over the half way line to get exposed in behind. They were quite comfortable sitting back and restricting space which made it much far easier to defend. We need to push forward against Bournemouth, having the outlet of an FB that can put crosses into the box isn't an option and that's why I would bring Targett and Guilbert in. We cannot afford to sit back and not try to get our FB's forward and attacking with the Midfield when we are at home. These games, picking up points is vital.

  23. Wow, I know Villalad has come in for some rightful criticism over the last twelve months, but picking on him for 'obsessing over men in suits' is not what I have come to expect from posters involved. Does it matter if he did indeed have a fetish for men in suits? For what it's worth, I agree with him. I'd prefer him to wear a suit... but it's Dean's choice and won't think anything less of him as a man or a coach if he went down the tracksuit and training top routine. Got to advertise the training wear somehow I guess.

  24. I think because he’s so highly rated it’s easy to forget he’s just a kid. Both him and Wesley. They will take time to settle and keep improving. Theres an image of Mings with his arm around Luiz after the game which sort of showed how much these younger players still need protecting. Found it:

  27. Sounds more akin to making it more like the Trinity Road executive suite instead of small individual boxes. I expect they can make more money by having a big room full of lots of tables than what, 10 x boxes seating 12 people each. If so it also shows they have spotted a way of making more money by changing limitations of an out of date stand. Large suites seem more fashionable/financially productive compared to what is possibly an out moded concept of "having your own box" I think they have struggled to sell boxes at times, certainly I know plenty of companies who used to take boxes but with cost cutting do not any more. However most companies could book tables on a match by match basis. Then you also have another large room to rent out for functions on non match days. I would think this is further evidence of commercial awareness from the new owners/their team thinking of how to do things differently instead of just plodding along with how it's always been done.

  38. I disagree with a few parts of this. Hourihane made himself available for the ball whenever he could, his touches and passes stats back this up, the thing is when you are under the pump tracking players from here there and everywhere you aren't always going to be in a position to receive the ball. There was also a definite ploy to get the ball out to our full backs in the second half where it's less dangerous against the Spurs press, so in many ways the ball was bypassing him rather than the other way around. I don't get why Hourihane is the one to blame for us not keeping possession? He was dispossessed once and had an 88% pass completion for the game. I get that people are frustrated that we couldn't get out, but I don't see the benefit of piling in on one player when the evidence suggests he's no more culpable than the rest of the team. Jack didn't play so deep because of anything to do with Hourihane, the entire team were forced back by a dominant Spurs midfield. Jack likes to be on the ball, and when we don't have much possession he goes looking for it, that doesn't automatically mean the defensive midfielder is having a bad game, he'll likely do it when Luiz plays as well. Luiz came on after the first goal, at which point Spurs dropped off a little to draw us out, so he had a little more room and less pressure to work with, and against tired players when he's fresh. It's not fair to compare him against Hourihane as the circumstances had changed and in many ways they are different players, I don't doubt Luiz will bring us more going forward, in fact that's probably why Smith brought him on. I have high hopes for Luiz, but I think 10 minutes is not a big enough sample set on which to judge him. I certainly don't feel those 10 minutes should be used to put the boot in on Hourihane who had a pretty decent game, if Luiz is the better player he will have the shirt sooner than later and Hourihane will still be very handy to keep around. I'm not Hourihanes biggest fan myself, but he should be judged fairly, he's been playing out of position essentially and done a great job by all accounts. On Luiz, he looked okay, I want to see more though, 10 minutes didn't really show enough of his defensive work and positional play to draw any conclusions, I'm certainly excited to see more though!

  39. That is probably the most nonsense I have read on VT this week. We didn't play 'park the bus, cop out' football at all on Saturday. First half we gave as good as we got, went at Spurs on the front foot whenever possible and lead the game at half time. Second half we sat back due to the pressure Spurs put on us, that's what a Champions League Finalist can do to a team like us. We didn't 'park the bus' tactically, we sat back due to the strength of the team we were playing. Of all recent Villa managers Smith has the most defined plan on how we will play all games, we will play the same way week in week out and try to win games. How we adapt to the opposition during games in the early stages of the season is something we will have to learn from and improve.
