  1. Dean Smith when asked, "Why were you shouting at your players to get up whilst 2-0 up? Surely you could have sat back and played it safe? Why take the risk?" " My philosophy is this : 1-0, 2-0 or 5-0 up: never ever settle for it, you must be hungry for more. If you do sit back not only are you inviting the opposition to get back into the game but you are showing them mercy. You have to look at the bigger picture, I don't only want us to destroy our current opponent's. I want to breed fear into our next ones "?

  3. Derby fans were going on before the game about how they were the best footballing side in the league. We made them look like the Aston Villa of old; absolutely ineffectual. We ripped apart one of the best sides in the league. Best performance I've seen from us in donkeys years.

  4. I hate to beat an old drum but today's performance shows just how much we were underachieving during the entire Steve Bruce tenure. Thank Christ we can actually watch our team play some football under Smith. He's making supporting villa enjoyable again.

  6. I'm sat here with a happy smile on my face. We're becoming Smith's Villa. We're not there yet, which makes today's performance all the more exciting. I've just spent an enjoyable 20 minutes browsing Derby City Fan Forums, and I have to say that some of their fans have shown a lot of respect for this Villa performance. They're obviously disappointed about the loss, but put it down to Villa being a class act and a top team. When did we last have this kind of respect from the opposition? This growing respect will make Aston Villa a team to be feared in the weeks and months ahead. UTV !

  7. Some guy who wasn't important at Brentford and who can't work without the Brentford structure came here, and is way out of his depth.

  9. Smith was an 18-25 year old Villa fan when McGrath wore our colours. Imagine becoming the manager of your lifelong club and having one of the best players to wear our colours in your lifetime posting that.

  12. That was the best away performance i have seen from us in a decade! Hamstrung by a Kodjia with too much to prove and Adomah who is simply off the pace we still played better in the first half. Enter Elmo and Bolasie and we simply ran over them. Kudos has to be given to Nyland who was a different animal tonight, a much stronger showing with confident shouts in patrolling his area, gave the defence the solidity it needed; The new keeping coach deserves his beer. Im genuinely excited how far this team can go once we build a head of steam. I know you shouldnt read into one result like this, but it has been building since the first game.

  13. Really on a different planet to Bruce today, we were everything a Steve Bruce side isn't, aggressive, playing with high tempo, pressing high, constant intensity and focused on keeping the ball. Of course, there's areas to improve, too many defensive lapses in the first half, too many missed chances throughout, however it's clear that Smith is implementing his ideas and the team are receptive to them, we will only improve. What I really love about this is that there's no real place for Jedinak player. I've said ever since we've been in the Championship that a holding, 'destroyer' type is simply not need at this level if you press high and keep the ball. I'm so glad Smith believes in this logic and is putting it in place here, we will benefit so much more from it. Great stuff so far.

  15. Today we played away from home against one of the best teams in the league, who have only lost once at home (and that to Leeds) and had more possession than them in their own back yard, scored 3 without reply and had 21 shots. As such I can only assume Dean Smith is a witch and should be burned at the stake. Nothing else makes any sense.

  16. MOTM Frank Lampard for switching to 3 at the back and giving us the space for those crosses. Nice one Frankie!

  17. Probably the best half of football I’ve seen us play since we get relegated. First half we were decent unti Taylor got injured and then until half time we more or less had 10 men so they put some pressure on. Nyland well done. Very assured and great saves. Second half wow. We missed chance after chance yet won 3-0. Gave Bolasie motm as he changed the game in terms of the first goal when it looked like it wasn’t going to come. Lets put this in to perspective. We’ve just gone to the ground of the in form home team of the season and played them off the park. Everything looks different for the season all of a sudden.

  18. Much to be pleased about. Not least, and I’ve not really seen it mentioned much, is that only 2 sides have conceded FEWER goals than us (3) since Smith ( and JT ?) arrived. Thats an absolutely brilliant turn around from where we were, and with the attacking talent we have puts us right in contention. Particularly as 4 of his 5 games have been against the sides at 1, 2, 3 and 6 in the Form Table ( with us at 5 and our next opponents at 4). Just shows there’s many ways of improving a defence.....not least going at the opposition rather than inviting them on.

  20. It's not just the win, it's the manner of the win. Great free from fear attacking performance. Playing to win rather than playing not to lose....that's a refreshing change and I'm loving it!

  26. I think he should tone it down. Comes in, transforms existing squad into entirely different sexy football, gets Alan bleeding Hutton to make successful forward passes. No window, no money spent, and 2 points per game promotion form. Many chairmen will be taking note.

  27. I was nervous when we signed Smith. I like him, progressive, exciting football, with a decent track record, and Villa fan to boot. But this is his biggest job, and he's a relative unknown. We've nothing to fear if this is anything to go by. What a **** performance. It was frustrating. We were very wasteful, and should have been ahead early on, but once we got going we **** eviscerated one of the best sides in the league. 3-0 doesn't fairly represent how much we dominated that game. Up next, small heath. lol.

  28. YES YES YES! Exactly this! The last minutes of a game isn't just the the end of that game, it's also the start of the preperation for the next game. Sitting back defending a lead will stick into the mind of the players who and they will carry that mentality with them to the next game. It's as much for the next game as for the current that we should keep on playing. FINALLY a manager who thinks the same. I loved it when he was announced but he is better than the already high hopes I had, better than in my wildest dreams even!

  34. Buzzing, the 3-0 win is emphatic in itself but the fact that we dominated what is supposed to be a really good side, on their own pitch....words cannot express. The big thing for me too is that you do not get the feeling that this is a one-off, I'm not saying we'll see this result every week but I'm confident now that we can replicate this level of performance consistently.

  35. What i love about Dean Smith is that he never tries to shut up shop, get a goal, he wants another. This is what we've all been crying out for. Now that isn't always going to work, there will be times when we conceed chasing more goals, but I'd confidently predict that his philosophy will win us many more points than it loses. And it's infinitely more enjoyable to watch. We are going places with this bloke.
