Aston Villa Review: Episode 162 - Villa snatch draw with Newcastle United

Aston Villa made a meal out of taking a point from the game against Newcastle United on Saturday, but take a point they did. After going behind to a Tommy Elphick own goal, Villa battled back with a rousing last half hour. And, for once, it was Villa who grabbed a goal at the death. Aaron Tshibola's header gave us something to cheer about.

In this week's Aston Villa Review we examine the myriad questions posed by Saturday's match, discuss Roberto Di Matteo's tactical choices and ask whether the latest in a long line of draws might be the one that pushes Villa on. We also preview two upcoming matches, namely the visits to Barnsley and Preston North End.

    • Guys operating on a new level. His overall game is superb and must scare the living crap out of defenders. Technically so so good.
    • It seems like one after the other is turning down the Liverpool job, they could well end up with Mourinho or Gerrard if they run out of alternatives.
    • Apologies for Morgan Sanson who I've just ignored for a week (where were you on that one @HanoiVillan 😉): Morgan Sanson (Nice) 5th/18th [Ligue 1] Home to Lorient (3-0) - Substituted in the 71st minute. 46 touches, 80.8% accuracy, 2 shots off target, 1 shot on target, 1 goal, 2 key passes, 1 big chance created. WhoScored.com rating of 8.14 / Sofascore.com rating of 8.2.   Please let me know if you can't get the video in your region! Also,  Teddy Rowe (Gloucester City) 23rd/24th [National League North] Home to Bishops Cleeve [Gloucestershire FA Challenge Cup Final] (2p-2) - Played 90 minutes. Missed penalty in shootout.
    • Indeed. Sports Witness rated Tier 4 source. If not on blacklist already, they should be
    • I can’t remember his book value it’s back on page 53 but we could pay half the wage for a player in his early 20’s for circa 20m which would be lower than digne’s amortisation per year and get a similar output. hes been decent this year not a world beater. we shouldn’t be having two older player for one position you should always have an eye to the future and not be paying 6.25m per year for a squad rotation option we don’t generate the revenue for it. its the smart financial thing to do
    • Walked from Elephant Park to Anspach & Hobday a couple of weeks back. That route was two shades of moody AF not a million years ago, you didn't hang around. I'm like, whoa this has changed. She's cooing at period property with original features.

    • Based on your description, may mean instead of having to buy an LB AND RB ( Assuming one of our LBs leave this summer ), someone like this could competently cover both, as well as wings? 🤔... Plus Cash and the kid we signed.
    • This should be filled in the bullshit bin. Poor source.
    • Will have to see how Ty looks in pre season if he's still on course for that. Even if he's lost a yard of pace (which feels inevitable given how bad his injury was) that will impact on things. I think I'd rather just stick with him centrally and see how he does on his return and would imagine we'll ease him in through league cup and sub roles first. The plan in pre season was to start the season with Konsa-Mings and then Pau would get games at LB and then shift to the centre at a later stage in the season. However given how well he's adapted I can't see any point moving him back out to LB now. Konsa a bit different but see how the new Serbian player does.
