Aston Villa Review: Episode 135 - Tottenham Hotspur preview and other bits and bobs

Life as an Aston Villa supporter is currently dominated by the appointment of the club's new manager, expected to be confirmed as Remi Garde this morning, but there's football to attend to as well. In this week's Aston Villa Review we briefly preview tonight's match against Tottenham Hotspur and even more briefly preview Sunday's visit from Manchester City.

There's a very short chat about last week's League Cup loss to Southampton before we address a handful of listener questions, ranging from the new manager's use or otherwise of Libor Kozak, possible transfer requirements and the overall attractiveness of the Villa job. (Not very.) Welcome to the club, Remi.

    • Gotta say I'm not sure what's the point of investing in the Australian side. Small population, talent spread our among ridiculous amount of competitive sports over there, AFL is king, rugby, cricket, swimming etc. There hasn't been much Australian talent of note lately (hopefully we got the best one lol). Not sure there's much profits to be made on Aussie soccer either but could be well wrong.  The MLS franchise seemed to have made more sense in all aspects.
    • To a degree it delayed the restart, as Ollie didn't have a ball to take the penalty, then got further delayed when funnily enough the ball turned up from the crowd just as he was about to start his run up.

    • Coen esque noir farce. Would advise just going in knowing nothing other than if you're a fan of Fargo you'll more than likely enjoy it rather than watching the trailer which spoils a bit of the plot.
    • Doesn't a card have to be physically shown to a player and their name written down? This goblin of a ref did neither. He took the card out, then Luiz came over before he could flash it, then he told him to **** off and then put the card away again. How exactly is that booking someone? I honestly think these **** modern referees are touched in the head. They act like shell-shocked war vets sometimes, they lose the rag under seemingly innocuous circumstances half of the time and expose themselves as clearly not understanding the rules of the game the other half. **** nuts.
    • Premature. Chelsea, Newcastle and Man Utd can still catch us if they win every game - we could still be in the conference league again
    • Israeli airforce back at it tonight, hitting Iran backed militant groups in Iraq. They did a lot of work against the Iranian air defence network last night, which is exactly what you’d do at the beginning of a longer air campaign. They have an air corridor through Syria and Iraq which can be used to fly close up to Iran and launch stand off munitions, minimizing risk to IAF aircraft. Iran can’t do a thing to prevent this, so their only option to respond is further direct missile and drone  attacks from Iran, activating Hezbollah rocket forces in Lebanon, or terrorist attacks in third locations against Israeli civilians. None of that can secure Iranian skies from further strikes, so it’s really a question of how much damage Israel now intends to inflict on the Mullah’s regime, it’s military and proxy forces, and Iranian CNI.
    • Scrap the league cup, and put the Conference League place to the League position. Have the FA Cup 3rd Round in October or early November to enable the competition to be spread evenly over the season. Will stop the congestion caused by League Cup semis and the final as well.
    • Have a feeling he will score a couple more goals before the season ends. His form has gone to shite and he looks ineffective and weak but we've all seen how he started the season, I think he may end the season in the same manner.
    • Top post. We quickly get used to things previously unimaginable. However, as things have panned out, it would be quietly devastating in the same way Leicester couldn't ever quite get over the line despite massively positive seasons overall, to qualify for the Champions League under Rodgers. Right now, it would be snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Such a blow could reverberate for years. My personal feeling is that we qualify, and a new era is being heroically written in front of our astonished eyes.
