Aston Villa Review: Episode 141 - Villa serve up a festive turkey

The season goes from worse to worser to worsest for Aston Villa and the Christmas period hasn't been much different. There was a glimmer of hope in the performance against West Ham United, just enough to make supporters wonder whether a miraculous escape might be possible after all. Sadly, two days later, any remaining hope was dashed.

In this week's Aston Villa Review we use the phrase "by our standards" a lot in order to try and squeeze some positives out of the West Ham match. There's a cursory nod to the Bank Holiday defeat at Norwich City, some choice words about a former player and brief previews of the upcoming games against Sunderland and Wycombe Wanderers. Warning: negativity.

    • No obviously that's not what I meant. I would have played Rogers or someone else. My point was even with Bailey injured, I wouldn't have started him.
    • Bournemouth have injuries aswell luckily. I think we'll see Diego Carlos back in. Maybe Konsa to RB to give Cashy a breather as it was 120 minutes after a hamstring so have to be careful. Digne could do with a breather so annoying that Moreno is out again for a few weeks. Going to be tough for Tielemans aswell so I'd like to see Tim come in for this to give him less ground to cover as Bournemouth do press a fair bit. Zaniolo out aswell so really if we stick with 4-2-3-1 we won't really have anyone bar Duran to come on and change things with 20 minutes left. Feels like a bit of a 1-1 to me. I agree with the above we're really going to need the Holte End on good form to drag us through if we're 1-0 up with 15 minutes left. I'll be in the Holte for this game so will play my part.
    • A boycott is required
    • He has played a lot more football than I thought he would have at this point. Some of it might be due to the Ramsey injury, but either way he has performed well and deserves the game time he is getting. The fact that Emery trusts him enough give him the minutes is a a great sign.
    • This is probably why he's not a football manager.
    • It's gonna be a tough game but all of their good form seems to be at home. Lost to Luton in their last away game.
    • not really a general UEFA or competition thread to talk about this but watching last night i do think the conference league looks a good idea - not because we won...when the commentator is saying it's villa's first european semi final for 40 years, it was lille's first european quarter final ever, west ham won it last year, fiorentina are going strong again, the other QF was fenerbahce vs olympiacos, these are all "big" teams in their own right, its strange how a competition that i saw at the start as UEFA box ticking as you had icelandic and bosnian teams making it to group stages for the first time ever come the latter stages is decent, my skepticism has gone (i always wanted us to win it anyway, i didnt want us to play the u17s in it and not care) i look at the EL line up and maybe thats the same UEFA are their own worst enemy with these competitions
    • It really is interesting looking back through the political threads here, because they do work as some sort of diary. This article was linked in the Brexit thread in 2017. https://www.private-eye.co.uk/ It's from Private Eye, their website has changed I think? The link goes to the homepage now. Look at the names and what's happened since? Collapsing councils in fire sales shocker.
    • It's funny watching the shootout back with that commentator in honking outraged prefect mode, constantly misdiagnosing what's actually happened with the yellow, while Lucy Ward's audibly screaming off-mic when Emi makes saves It's mad that after everything that went on he got a yellow for innocuously asking for a ball when there genuinely wasn't one on the pitch, only for it to mysteriously reappear from the Lille end just as his own teammate was trying to take the pen. You almost pulled it off Lmao also at the idea that Emi was sailing deadly close to the wind like he probably doesn't know the rules for shootout yellow cards better than any keeper alive, he lives for this shit
    • Tone deaf response from the FA. We need an independent regulator so badly.
