Player Match Ratings: You can’t win them all!

It would have been fitting to have won a second successive home league game on a night when the sad passing of Dalian Atkinson was impeccably marked on the tenth minute by home and away fans alike but it was in May 2015 that we last managed to win two home league games in a row. Last night’s 1-1 draw mirrored the score when the two clubs last met at Villa Park in 1987. That point eventually played a part in securing automatic promotion for us and let’s hope this point can do the same but we

Player Match Ratings: We win for the first time in 189 days!

Yesterday’s win was our first since March. We really had to break the losing habit quickly and we did it in our first home game of the season to provide a much needed confidence boost to both players and fans. Alan Stubbs said following this defeat “We won’t be the last team to come here and get beat”. I hope he is proved right and that Villa Park soon becomes a fortress for us. Rotherham gave a workmanlike performance yesterday but they offered little threat and we will face tougher t

Aston Villa Review: Episode 158 - Villa beaten at Sheffield Wednesday

The 2016/17 season is underway and Aston Villa made their Championship bow on Sunday against much-fancied Sheffield Wednesday. Roberto di Matteo's side put in a performance of two halves but conceded late in the better half to lose 1-0, but there are some positives to be taken alongside the same old negatives. In this week's Aston Villa Review we assess the game at Hillsborough, welcome Ross McCormack to the club and wave goodbye to a few of the departed. There's no show next week so we also co

Aston Villa Review: Episode 157 - the Championship season begins

It's been a minute but we're back. Yes, plenty has happened since our last show but we needed a break after four brutal years or we might not have even made it into this coming season. It all begins on Saturday, with Aston Villa's Football League Championship kick-off taking place at Hillsborough on Sunday afternoon. In this week's Aston Villa Review we have a quick preview chat about that game against Sheffield Wednesday and recap the club's summer dealings, welcome the new coaching staff and

Player Match Ratings: New season same Villa?

This was admittedly only a friendly but this game gave little cause for optimism for the season that is ahead of us. This performance was uncomfortably similar to many of the displays that we gave last season and those around me were openly questioning what differences there actually has been on the pitch itself rather than off it. We had the best of the game until they hit their equalizer on the hour mark. But our defence suddenly looked shaky as it had done more often than not last season

VIDEO | The Villa View Tea Brew!

You'll often see fan channels do a video about new transfers. "ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW IN 60 SECONDS" We like this idea but wanted to make it our own. We started the idea by finding a name and as a bit of a joke picked 'Tea Brew' - "What if we gave the stats and figures in the time it took to make a cup of tea, that's roughly a minute" And here we are. All you need to know about Pierluigi Gollini in the time it takes me, to make a cup of tea.

In the week when an interview with the striker emerged claiming he wants to get Villa back to the Premier League accompanied by a training montage Rocky Balboa himself would be proud of, Matt gives his reasons why he thinks it's time for Gabby to leave Villa Park.

    • I’m thinking he is more CCO - Chief Commercial Officer. But then who is the CEO and COO of Aston Villa?   He surely isn’t combining all three roles?
    • 59 games. 2 full seasons would be 76 games. By the end of the season it will be 63 games, and by that time we'll likely have made over 15 more points that the team that averaged the 5th highest amount of points in the same time frame. And probaly 20 more than Spurs. If we somehow finish below them it would be bad luck. I'm not saying there's an excuse for it if we do, just bemoaning our misfortune. We definitely deserve a reward for what Emery has performed with this squad. 5th place and europa league would be nice, but not quite what I think our form has deserved.
    • I thought he was "President of Business Operations"? This is the Chief Operating Officer in my view; not CEO. His job is the boring rubbish in the background. At least that's my take. He should be relatively invisible. I 100% agree that there's stuff he should have done better. But it seems like his initial remit was to identify underperforming aspects and improve them quickly, probably with an eye on PSR for next season. The nice may simply have to take a back seat.
    • And as a side to it and what it does to la Liga...  Don't forget the states are hosting the expanded world cup in 2026, I wonder if part of this is to try and expand the soccer market in certain key areas that happen to host WC games, because they have a feeling that Cameroon vs Finland played in a 80k seater stadium in front of a global audience might not be the best idea
    • That's a bit like saying that Emery had a pretty easy task in terms of improving us on the pitch after the s*** show that was Gerrard.  Just because our revenue was pathetic doesn't mean that we've not done a good job of getting out of some bad deals early and then doubling / trebling their value within a few months.
    • The obvious problem with the PLs 39th game was still the fact that it was a 39th game...  If they just stuck to 38 and played a regular "home" game somewhere else in the world, like the NFL international series, I think it would have been accepted  The next problem is that the PL have no combined or mutual pot of money, they're all greedy, so if there was 1 PL game played in new York for example, the only 2 teams that would benefit from it are the 2 teams that play there, so why would the other 18 teams agree to let it happen, the only result, which is probably the same as what Spain will be looking at, is that the big clubs will get bigger
    • We are still at the start of our journey (hopefully) both on and off the field.  Just as Emery is not content with 4th and the semi-finals of the Conference League, I am sure that Heck isn't content with the deals already done.  Atairos have yet to reveal their hand and nor have the new Directors.  NSWE clearly have a very aggressive plan and are very determined to make it happen.
    • Whoever comes in after Klopp will be under stupid levels of pressure and expectations and is bound to fail.  Exactly like it was for Moyes at Utd and Emery at Arsenal, when objectively, looking back, they didn't do as bad as some people said they did. Slot might be an easy bandaid manager, who can take the flack, be relatively stable and then be easily replaced in the next year or so.
