U.S. Politics

Was looking for this thread the other day, saw the palin statement, embarrassing as ****, was thinking well at least that's him done, picked up the paper the next day apparently it's a huge hit with Christian America because he's a divorcee etc

Amazing that the most powerful nation in the world still votes based on religion and that muppets like palin and trump can have a career in politics

I just don't want Hillary or Rubio to win. The other two winning would be fine. Sanders because I like listening to him talk and Trump because it would be interesting. I like a good villain.

Donald Trump has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.

Honestly, he has.

I'm leaving; this world is broken.

The list of people who can proffer a nomination is in the hundreds. Bound to be a few kooks among them.

And there have been some humdingers who won, too ...

Kissinger.

Aye. I'm aware of Kissingers award - the only known war criminal to propose genocide with a Nobel Peace Prize - but in fairness, although it was mostly evil, at least he'd done something.

Someone has nominated Trump because hearing an old man in a wig threaten the Chinese makes them all warm inside - that worries me.

Iowa is an unrepresentative state and I've no idea why it has the sway it has.

Trump's popularity should suffer as the field narrows and the 'moderate' Republicans switch to whatever establishment figure is left standing. The problem is the longer Cruz and Rubio stay in the race and look moderate next to Trump the chances of them becoming the nominee grow, which is troubling because both are more extreme than Trump in everything but rhetoric.

New Hampshire picks.... Trump & Sanders.

:)

Pretty accurate indicator of opposing political views in New England. Solidly left wing, progressive, anti-war social justice candidate vs unreligious, sloganeering, jingoistic racist.

Interesting that things have polarized so far that it is the candidates at opposing ends of the spectrum that are picking up the greatest support.

It's a crude comparison but I suppose the equivalent would be front runner candidates from the BNP and the Socialist Workers Party in the UK.

Hard to see any sort of potentially unifying figure emerging between now and the election, so post 2017 will see the US public more politically divided than ever.

Two questions really, how did it get to this position and what do you think it bodes for the future?

The most important point re Iowa and New Hampshire is, don't read too much into them. Their practical function is to reduce the size of the field.

Sanders remains on course to lose comfortably, as he still appears to have made no inroads with minority voters. This chart, borrowed from here, shows how far behind he is in the next two states, followed by some of those with the largest delegate counts:

DATE STATE CLINTON SANDERS
2/20 Nevada 50.3 28.1
2/27 South Carolina 60.5 29.3
3/8 Michigan 59.9 29.0
3/15 Florida 61.0 26.0
3/15 North Carolina 55.9 28.3
3/15 Ohio 52.8 38.6
4/5 Wisconsin 45.6 43.4
4/26 Pennsylvania 51.4 28.0
6/7 California 46.3 32.

As you can see, he's looking to have to overturn 20+ point deficits in most of them. The smart money remains on the Democrat race being basically over in favour of Hillary within a month or so.

Trump is different, he seems like he could actually win, although it's a very very very long way to go yet.

It's be like Jeremy Corbyn getting elected as labour leader, and someone like IDS as tory leader and then them being popular amongst the grass-roots. Couldn't happen in the UK. Oh!, did they. Cripes.

Am I the only one that wants Trump to win just to see what would happen ? For comedy value alone.

Same with the Scottish referendum,  just too see what would happen is half the fun.

He is a crazy but I have to admit I am little curious!
