The World Cup is still underway, but I figured I'd post a look at possible EL opponents and seeding.

Villa enters the competition in the playoff (4th qualifying) round and is assured of being seeded, by virtue of a coefficient of 25.871.

Possible opponents in that round include: Red Star Belgrade, Anorthosis Famagusta, Grasshoppers Zurich, Rapid Vienna, APOEL Nicosia, Montpellier, Trabzonspor, Wisla Krakow, Motherwell, Hibernian, Dundee United, Omonia Nicosia, AIK Stockholm, Bohemians.

Should Villa advance to the group stage, it is possible (if there's enough upsets in the CL qualifying) for Villa to fall as low as the fourth pot. If there are no upsets affecting the seeding for this round, then the possible group stage opponents would be:

Pot 1 - Atletico Madrid, Porto, CSKA Moscow, PSV, Juventus, Sporting Lisbon, Olympiakos, Fenerbahce, Stuttgart, AZ Alkmaar, Steaua Bucharest
Pot 2 - Lille, Galatasaray, Dinamo Kiev, Bayer Leverkusen, PSG, Sporting Braga, Celtic, Brugge, Palermo, Getafe, Besiktas
Pot 4 - Austria Wien, Feyenoord, Real Mallorca, Litex Lovech, CSKA Sofia, OB Odense, Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk, Napoli, Dortmund, Dinamo Zagreb, Partizan, BATE Borisov

If we get into the group stage, we'll at least be playing some name-brand clubs as we add to the fixture congestion.

There's some good clubs in there. Here's hoping for a more convincing crack at the tournament this time around.

Can we get Motherwell, home town team, went to primary school next to the ground and therefore can't lose.

I hope we get Napoli. It would be great to visit my old home and it would be a nice trip. Very Happy

Hopefully the Dublin friendly will be a dress-rehearsal. Either that or a wee jolly north of the border.

i wouldnt mind playing vienna again just to put them in their place as we just didnt care about that game.

would love a cypriot team also as i should be in cyprus about the time we play the game.

we will get a tough group thats for sure

we could get a death group of juventus, galatasaray and dortmund

Well i had just got back from a holiday weekend in Vienna when they knocked us out last time (Why do things like that always happen Shocked ) so i would enjoy a return fixture against them... as long as we won this time of course!!

Indeed dots. Demitri is making the rather dangerous assumption that we would somehow care this time around.

Absolutely BOF! If we do happen to draw them just to say Vienna is well worth a visit!

yeah your right bri, personally i think we should at least take qualifying to the group stages seriously then play some backup players. if we get past the group stages then take the competition more seriously

I'm with you Demitri, I would hope that we would; and I actually think we will this time around. But I would hate to draw them, not take it seriously, and go out again Laughing
