A New Season, A New Approach
In our 2nd instalment of changes suggested by you in the "How would you change VillaTalk?" thread (the first changes being the forum re-ordering) we have decided to amend our approach towards moderation of VillaTalk. We have listened to your requests and suggestions and have acted upon many of them. We now ask that you take a moment to read our response.
Below is an outline of the changes which will come into place for the start of the new Season - 15th August.
1. The 'Respect' campaign
First and foremost, our new 'Respect' campaign is specifically designed so that POSTERS RESPECT OTHER POSTERS AT ALL TIMES. This is the main thrust of the new modding approach and it will be taken very seriously.
VillaTalk is a private forum run by Villa fans for Villa fans where everyone can put their point of view and can expect not to be abused. If you are on VillaTalk then you agree to behave in a certain way. You are here because you want to discuss things in a civil manner with other Villa fans even if their opinions differ from yours. If you have an opinion, then you have the right to put it across and expect it to be discussed and argued reasonably; and that goes for posters on both sides of any discussion.
We want to promote healthy discussion at all times. We want to put an end to the petty bickering, insults & the jibes. Any comment you make can easily be taken the wrong way, so if in doubt, leave it out and if you do offend someone, apologise. There will no longer be a "grey area" where unhelpful and unconstructive posts can be made and not dealt with.
We want to prevent intentional de-railing of threads, malice, trolling and other attempts to bring VillaTalk down to the level of the schoolyard. Troublemakers are not welcome and will quickly have their accounts blocked. On VillaTalk no-one has the right to behave how they want to who they want, when they want.
2. Yellow cards are no more
We will no longer issue yellow cards as cautions. Cautions can still be given via PM, but there is no longer a public rank associated with that. Only the poster in question and the moderators will know that they have been cautioned. The card system was a success for a time, but we (and you) felt that it has outlived it's usefulness. It also means there is no longer a simple '2 strikes and you are out' approach to membership. There are various benefits to removing the cards system.
a) Lately it appeared as though the yellow card rank was almost a badge of honour to some.
b) It was also used as a safety net by those who felt they had an indiscretion 'in hand'.
c) Similar to 'b)', when cards expired many went back to previous behaviour - repeat ad nauseum.
d) The rigid 'red follows yellow' system stopped doing what it set out to do.
e) There were times when people knowingly baited posters into their 2nd yellow card thus undermining the system.
f) It tied the hands of moderators in dealing efficiently with troublesome posters.
3. Red cards are no more
As an extension to #2, there will be no public rank identifying users as being banned. If you suspect a friend of being banned, you can email them to ask them. It doesn't require the inevitable forum discussion that a public rank would prompt.
So that's it. As long as posters behave as we ask above, and as the vast majority of you always have done, then both the site and individual posters will be fine. On the other hand, should anyone feel that the rules don't apply to them and can be ignored they will in all likelihood be removed from the forum and have their account blocked in a very short time.
Thank you. |
