   Falling Out Over Intertoto Entry?
The Intertoto Cup Posted by: Richard on Friday, February 28, 2003 - 11:04 AM

Richard reports on an apparent argument brewing between Graham Taylor and Doug Ellis over entry into this year's Intertoto.
Planetfootball.com are reporting the following

"Graham Taylor faces being shamed by Chairman Doug Ellis over the club's plans concerning the Intertoto Cup"

Welcome aboard Graham we have been shamed by Doug Ellis for the last 20 odd years.

"Taylor is adamant that his charges should not enter the summer competition while 'Deadly Doug ' sees it as The Villans' only route into Europe for next season"

Or any future season whilst Doug remains at the club.

"The deadline for teams confirming their entry in the much-scrutinised competition is 5pm on Friday and former England boss Taylor looks like fighting a losing battle to convince the board on the matter"

Just like every 'battle' he has with the board he is the looser. Although I wonder, as with every other 'battle' how much fight he puts up.

"Taylor decalred " My opposition to the Intertoto cup is on record""

Forgive me if I am wrong but also on record is your support for the competition. When you came back to the club you were very vocal on the reasons why we should be in it. Just shows how much you have lost touch with the modern game.

"It starts too early and can lead to fatigue later in the domestic season"

"However, Chairman Doug Ellis points to the financial implications as the reason for entering"

"When we won the Intertoto Cup in 2001" ( Actually won one of the 3 finals Doug ) "We made a net profit of £1M from our three rounds and also got into the UEFA Cup"

Well I'm no big fan of the Intertoto but really can't be fussed either way. I see the benefits of playing competitive games rather than pre season friendlies and also the drawbacks of tired players. I also have to ask what's the point ? How far are we likely to progress in the UEFA anyway given our recent record. Also are we that hard up for cash that we need a poxy £1m when we could get more than this for higher league placings if players are not playing tired as a result of the early start to the season.

The main point I get from this is that realising the fans antagonism towards the board, they are trying to tell us there is some dispute between the Manager and Board and, therefore, trying to enhance Taylor's reputation with the fans as being on our side, or being the man to stick up for the board when in actual fact he is the boards patsy.

But then again I do like a good conspiracy theory.
