   Preview Villa vs Lille OSC
The Intertoto Cup Posted by: Peter_B on Monday, August 05, 2002 - 08:39 PM

After Sunday's friendly action, it's back to the real thing on Wednesday as Lille are the visitors in the Intertoto Cup.
Villa have won every single one of their Intertoto ties at Villa Park (Vigo won at the Hawthorns), and a similar result in Wednesday night's game will see us through to our second successive Intertoto final.

Villa's excellent result in France has left the tie finely balanced, it really could go either way. Villa will take heart from the fact that the french looked rather toothless last week and they then followed this up by opening the League campaign over the weekend with a 3-0 reverse at Bordeaux. They are not a side in form it seems.

Can Villa take advantage? Well, they should. Even with Vassell (blisters) and Angel (transferitis) unlikely to play, Villa should be able to field an unchanged side from last week should taylor so desire. Encks is available again though, so I'd expect him to step into the goal to replace Postma.

Given that any player playing in this game will definitely be cup tied, it will be interesting to see if Alpay is considered 'ready' to play.

The man to watch on the Lille side is certainly their goal scorer from last week - Argentine midfielder Fernando D'Amico.

In the other semi final, Vfb Stuttgart defend a narrow 2-1 lead over Slaven Belupo in Croatia. We may well be off to Koprivnica again after all....if we can see off Lille.
