Aston Villa have this evening completed the signing of Blackburn defender Stephen Warnock. The fee remains undisclosed though reports throughout the life of the story have ranged anywhere from £6m up to £10m.

Aston Villa today completed the signing of Leeds United's under-21 England international Fabian Delph.
The rumoured fee is between £6m-£8m + add-ons but the fee is not official.

Aston Villa have made their first serious dip into the summer transfer market by completing the signing of Middlesbrough's international winger Stewart Downing. The fee is believed to be £10m rising to £12m and he has signed on a 4 year contract.

So, after weeks of speculation and being linked with pretty much every footballer with two working legs - and the subsequent denials that we are after any of the good ones - we look likely to make our first signing of the summer, namely Stewart Downing for £12 million. But with one star left-winger in the side already, what plans does Martin O'Neill have for Stew, and where does he fit into our tactical play?

I thought I’d take a look at how accurate the press are at picking out their Villa rumours. Obviously picking every single story from every source would be pretty much impossible so I’ve taken the first source from each rumour, to see how the sources shape up against each other on being the first to ‘break’ a rumour. I have credited both Tribal Football and Sunderland Echo with the Cuellar story as they both reported the rumour on the same day. I’ve omitted Guzan rumours because it’s impossible to know who is first, along with the fact that everyone knew we were going to move for him anyway having tried to sign him in January.

'Thats2' doesn't want to get so worked up about the perceived lack of transfer activity quite yet because he doesn't believe the media reports are accurate, so we shouldn't be hanging our hopes on them. But his patience isn't endless...
