Yes it was a little reminiscent of that yesterday. A third of the possession, 4 corners to their 18 but it is goals that win matches and the only goal of the game was ours and took us into the top four with only Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United standing above us.

Not bad for a club in crisis was it?

Valencia head up to Manchester City for their second game in 24 hours after this one and may have Milner hitching a lift with them on the team bus!

Our two worst home performance in the league were our first and last of this season. We won just 8 of 19 home games where the top 4 won from 14 – 17 of theirs and we also drew 8 to make it 25 points dropped at Villa Park compared to only 20 away. The figures show that our home form cost us fourth and but for already doomed Hull’s point against Liverpool today we would have ended the season seventh.

This gave us six successive ding dong derby wins, it kept us still in the chase for a Champions League spot, it stretched the point chasm between the two teams to 17 points and it left the Small Heath manager bemoaning the fact that “the bigger teams get more decisions through the course of the season”.

Two goals in the last 20 minutes showed Everton that we do not fade away during the last 30 minutes of every game and left them still 4 points behind us with just 4 games remaining to make those points up.

Four dropped points from two home games have proved once more that points on the board are worth more than games in hand and our season may well now rest on what we do in our next four games and two of those are against Chelsea!

Was this a sign that we had gone one time too many to the well or can we put these two dropped points behind us and go on the sort of run between now and the end of the season that will give us the 19 points from 27 that I think may give us fourth spot? We showed spirit by once again coming back from behind and we will need to show the same never say die attitude in our next home game and in the 8 that follow!

This was not as comfortable a win as the score would suggest or that it really should have been given the number of opportunities we had but a win and an important win it was!

If this had been a fight the referee would have stepped in on 68 minutes to stop it!

We left the ground disappointed at not doing the league double over Manchester United this season despite our four point haul being the best we have produced against them since season 1995-96. That’s progress!

A good performance witnessed by a third very good crowd in 8 days against an Arsenal side that could have gone top with a win showed that we are not for being distracted by our forthcoming Cup Final in the league as we had already demonstrated on Saturday we would not be in the FA Cup!

Another three goals and another FA Cup win at Villa Park. We now stand only 2 ties away from a second Wembley appearance this season and three from a second Cup Final so does anyone fancy making it a cup double?

Well we were not expecting that were we? Two goals down within 25 minutes had wiped out our first leg advantage and left us in real danger of becoming only the third team in the 50 year history of this competition to win an away leg but not reach the final. But our six goal salvo did for Big Sam’s Blackburn and put us back at Wembley after a 10 year absence!

These two dropped points may cost us a great deal when the points are added together in early May. Struggling West Ham have taken four points from us this season and must be wishing they could play us every week as those 4 points may well keep them up as might dropping 5 points against them keep us outside of the top 4!

A win from the first of our January trilogy of cup ties against Blackburn extinguished their hopes in the FA Cup and proved a welcome tonic to us on the back of two successive league defeats!

Two defeats in three days has taken us from fourth to sixth and from eight points clear of Liverpool to being just two points ahead of them. We now face a season defining month and must ensure that a second season of immense promise does not implode with a dismal run of results!

Nine points from three games in an 8 day period is Championship form. OK lets not get too carried away but as we enter the festive period we now look realistic Champions League contenders as we prepare for a 6 pointer against Arsenal and a home game against mid-table Liverpool!

Another home win has taken us back above Liverpool into fifth, has left us level on points with fourth placed Spurs for a minimum of 24 hours and has kept us 5 points clear of the eighth placed team whose supporters must be having nose bleeds!

It seemed to me there were potentially three hand balls by Spurs players last night rather than just one. One of them was spotted by the officials, one might have been ignored by them because it led to a goal for us anyway (if the officials are to be given the benefit of the doubt) but the third cost us the game!
