Take me to the River - Fulham Away report
FA Carling Premier League 2009-2010 Posted by: blandy on Sunday, January 31, 2010 - 12:00 PM

They come round faster than birthdays, important games these days. But in a rather more welcome way. Today it was time to go down to Fulham, for one of the best away trips of each season.

Gunners fail to hit the target as do we!
PlayerMatch Ratings 2009-2010 Posted by: John on Thursday, January 28, 2010 - 02:39 AM

A good performance witnessed by a third very good crowd in 8 days against an Arsenal side that could have gone top with a win showed that we are not for being distracted by our forthcoming Cup Final in the league as we had already demonstrated on Saturday we would not be in the FA Cup!

Are we going to Wembley once, twice or thrice?
PlayerMatch Ratings 2009-2010 Posted by: John on Sunday, January 24, 2010 - 11:48 AM

Another three goals and another FA Cup win at Villa Park. We now stand only 2 ties away from a second Wembley appearance this season and three from a second Cup Final so does anyone fancy making it a cup double?

   Que sera sera!
PlayerMatch Ratings 2009-2010 Posted by: John on Thursday, January 21, 2010 - 08:32 AM

Well we were not expecting that were we? Two goals down within 25 minutes had wiped out our first leg advantage and left us in real danger of becoming only the third team in the 50 year history of this competition to win an away leg but not reach the final. But our six goal salvo did for Big Sam’s Blackburn and put us back at Wembley after a 10 year absence!

We fail to burst their bubbles!
PlayerMatch Ratings 2009-2010 Posted by: John on Monday, January 18, 2010 - 12:39 AM

These two dropped points may cost us a great deal when the points are added together in early May. Struggling West Ham have taken four points from us this season and must be wishing they could play us every week as those 4 points may well keep them up as might dropping 5 points against them keep us outside of the top 4!

Someone Almost There - Blackburn Rovers League Cup Semi Away Leg Report
Football League Cup Posted by: blandy on Friday, January 15, 2010 - 12:43 PM

It was a long time coming last night's match - both in terms of a wait for a semi final and of course the postponement of the original game a week or so ago.
We hoped that the the contrast between the fevered desire to get hold of tickets for the game by us lot and the indifference shown by the Rovers fans would be reflected in the performances of the two teams over this game and the return leg next week, and to an extent it was, for the first half at least.

   The cup that cheers!
PlayerMatch Ratings 2009-2010 Posted by: John on Sunday, January 03, 2010 - 10:18 AM

A win from the first of our January trilogy of cup ties against Blackburn extinguished their hopes in the FA Cup and proved a welcome tonic to us on the back of two successive league defeats!

   Torres steals the points!
PlayerMatch Ratings 2009-2010 Posted by: John on Wednesday, December 30, 2009 - 10:36 AM

Two defeats in three days has taken us from fourth to sixth and from eight points clear of Liverpool to being just two points ahead of them. We now face a season defining month and must ensure that a second season of immense promise does not implode with a dismal run of results!

   Not Counting Any Chickens Yet
FA Carling Premier League 2009-2010 Posted by: PB on Monday, December 21, 2009 - 01:43 PM

PB returns for a somewhat downbeat spot of half term analysis. Can Villa crack the big four, or better yet challenge for a long overdue title as some have claimed?

Nine points from three games in an 8 day period is Championship form. OK lets not get too carried away but as we enter the festive period we now look realistic Champions League contenders as we prepare for a 6 pointer against Arsenal and a home game against mid-table Liverpool!

Jiggery Pokery - Man Utd away report
FA Carling Premier League 2009-2010 Posted by: blandy on Sunday, December 13, 2009 - 11:32 AM

I imagine Darren Fletcher's post match interview may have been along these lines

It was jiggery pokery, trickery, chokery,
how did they open us up,
Robbery, muggery,
Villa skull-duggery,
We never have any luck,
What a delivery,
I might as well have been,
marking a lumbering galoot
Jiggery Pokery who were these nobodies
making us look like buffoons

(with apologies to Neil Hannon)

Aston Villa vs. Rochdale; FA Youth Cup 3rd round.
Reserves & Youth Team Posted by: OutByEaster? on Wednesday, December 09, 2009 - 10:56 PM

Ah, the magic of the cup, not the big cup obviously, that’s like the magic of David Copperfield, all disappearing pyramids and giant sheets, this is more like a bloke in a club with a pigeon and a big hat.

…and erm Gary Gardner.

PlayerMatch Ratings 2009-2010 Posted by: John on Sunday, December 06, 2009 - 01:14 AM

Another home win has taken us back above Liverpool into fifth, has left us level on points with fourth placed Spurs for a minimum of 24 hours and has kept us 5 points clear of the eighth placed team whose supporters must be having nose bleeds!

You have to hand it to Spurs (or the referee did)!
PlayerMatch Ratings 2009-2010 Posted by: John on Sunday, November 29, 2009 - 10:46 AM

It seemed to me there were potentially three hand balls by Spurs players last night rather than just one. One of them was spotted by the officials, one might have been ignored by them because it led to a goal for us anyway (if the officials are to be given the benefit of the doubt) but the third cost us the game!

Reserves & Youth Team Posted by: Tubby on Wednesday, November 25, 2009 - 11:31 PM

On a cold night on a hill in North London that saw Villa Reserves stretch their lead at the top of the Premier Reserve League South, a not so fat man was sat there scribing the game on his Blackberry. Here is the result

Part Time Moral England - Burnley Away Report
FA Carling Premier League 2009-2010 Posted by: blandy on Sunday, November 22, 2009 - 09:51 AM

Burnley's got a lot to be proud about right now. At the top of the town's list of course, is their Football Club. Brought back to the nation's attention by the virtues of Owen Coyle, hard work and a pleasing willingness to play the right way.

Club Stuff Posted by: John_Lerwill on Sunday, November 15, 2009 - 02:32 PM

As Christmas approaches, the goose is getting fat, and the Villa supporter begins to dream of former glories. The 50th anniversary of Villa's 21 goals in three games is now with us, and some of us remember that time. But how about the more remote times?

Villa lit the blue touch paper we stood back and enjoyed the display but Megson might just find himself in danger of being the fall Guy after this one!

The comeback kids almost pulled off the big recovery at small heath tonight, coming from two goals down before eventually succumbing to a late Kevin Phillips goal and a thrilling three-all draw.

FA Carling Premier League 2009-2010 Posted by: blandy on Saturday, October 31, 2009 - 09:41 PM

The third in a sequence of 4 away games in 10 days ended up like the previous 2 - scores level, and fairly so.

This game at least was at the rather novel time of 3 pm on a Saturday. Marvellous.
