NurembergVillan Posted August 18, 2013 Moderator Share Posted August 18, 2013 Does anyone else think Southampton could go the way of their bell-bothering neighbours from Fratton Park with the way they're spending so much money Their most recent signing, today, is a 9-cap Italian international striker called Pablo Osvaldo for the best part of £16m. He's 27 years old and averages a goal every three games They've spent £75m in the last 12 months. Seventy five million! Surely, even if that propels them into European football, they can't be anywhere near being able to justify that sort of spend. Every time they break the bank it makes me scratch my head... villa4europe
ran by a money man so id guess not like I said in the transfer thread, think the fans are getting ahead of themselves already, huge expectations
Voinjama
Are we gonna have a thread for every team in the premiership? And I think the Southampton owners are shrewder than the ones at Pompey.
TrentVilla Posted August 18, 2013 Moderator Share Posted August 18, 2013 I guess it comes down to the wages. If the club has no debt (I say if because I've no idea if they have or not) and they aren't trying to service debt or make a profit then it could be sustainable. With no debt so long as the wage bill/revenue percentage is kept in check then the spending will be covered by TV revenue as long as they remain in the PL. Oaks
Southampton are at least twice the size as Portsmouth as a club, they have a decent ground and fill it often. As you have seen, with the new TV deal means a lot of clubs are pushing the boat out.
AVFCforever1991
Plus they seem to have a good youth setup..
coda
I thought they made a mistake getting rid of Adkins but it worked out for them. At least they're having a crack at establishing themselves rather than factoring in parachute payments.
VillaForever1970
According to VT it means their owner must be top notch.
Nigel Posted August 18, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted August 18, 2013 Plus they seem to have a good youth setup.. Yup, one of the best. It would be a shame to see this new philosophy stunt its progress.
villa4europe
maybe not top notch but like I said you have to assume that a man who made his fortune by looking after billionaires bank accounts knows a thing or two about budgets and how much money is available to spend... as ive just said to a Southampton fan on another site the problem is making the jump from being a Europa league team to a champions league team I don't think its impossible that in 2 years time with the right investment / players and with that youth set up that they can challenge for 7th/6th, what I do think is impossible is Southampton jumping up to 4th, they will be picked off by the bigger fish in the same way everyone else is, in 2 years time if shaw is the prem's best LB then he wont play for Southampton, it really si that simple unfortunately

Rovers13
I thought they made a mistake getting rid of Adkins but it worked out for them. At least they're having a crack at establishing themselves rather than factoring in parachute payments. They still probably did make a mistake. Pochettino has a poor record and they had the same poiints per game average last year
villa4europe
he's got a bigger draw than adkins though, impossible to know for sure but do you think players would be leaving celtic / roma / lyon to play for adkins? don't see it myself
HalfTimePost
Pochettino isnt poor he did a decent job in Spain for Espanyol until the owners started messing around with his team from what I remember, then they really went down hill but it wasn't Pochettinos I dont think, had them playing good football. Obviously has to take a bit of blame for the poor job he did at the start of last season at Espanyol but I think, after a rocky start where they looked certain for relegation his Southampton side did really well. romavillan Posted August 19, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted August 19, 2013 They got Osvaldo because of Pochettino working with him before. Osvaldo is a very good player but I don't know how well he'll do at Southampton. Massive surprise to me that he'd leave Roma for Southampton too. They must be paying a lot of money, he was trying to get a move to a CL club, not been happy for a couple of months. Southampton though?
heid3ster
I keep hearing predictions that Southamption will be top 10, maybe even top 8 this year? I don't see it myself. They've spent a lot but I'm not sure they've spent well. I'm predicting they'll struggle this year. Terrible kits, too. What happened to the stripes? The_Rev
Plus they seem to have a good youth setup.. When Bale joins Madrid it is going to be the second time a Southampton youth academy graduate breaks the world transfer record. Not bad going really, is it?
