Windows 8

Anyone using it yet?

Seeing as Microsoft are offering a download upgrade from any XP or Vista OS to W8 Pro for £25 (also 15% cashback through Quidco) I thought I'd give it a bash.

First impressions are quite good. It's a lot smoother and faster than it's predecessor and seems to run smoother than the W7 I have on my PC at work.

It does everything in win7 as far as I can tell but apart from the tablet UI it brings very few new "must haves" It's very fast though. Obvious code cleanup.

Search is annoying as it doesn't include the control-panel without a click input.

Windows 8 improves battery life and performance. So both are worth upgrading for. I'm gonna learn Win8 with my Surface before upgrading my Series 9. Combined with my Lucia 920 I'll be windows 8 through and through. Gonna embrace it.

Not used it myself yet but, as said in the Surface thread, it's sops to being a tablet OS really don't play for a mouse and keyboard user. Even doing a course designed to inform people likely to be selling Windows 8 I was struck that Microsoft were struggling to sell me on the concepts they'd got. Some of the stuff it does, like having regions of the screen having functions associated with them, only translate to a gesture, touch based interface, to my mind, and serve to only be clunky when you transfer them to a keyboard and mouse.

I fear this will be a massive misstep for Redmond.

I think this is a piece of brilliance and truly forward looking by Microsoft. When Win9 comes out your phone will be the only computer you need. Docking it with a monitor and mouse to use as a pc.

Win8 has the normal old win7 desktop. So if you want to use that you can get Chindie. For the performance boost and battery life increase it's worth the upgrade.

Personally I like the new start screen. You can scroll througheverything wwith your trackpad. Also you'll get access to the windows store and what will likely be a large amount of new apps.

That, weirdly, seems to be forgotten in most conversations. Apart from a few nagging changes, it's still the old desktop as per win95. It's not that much to freak out about.

For £25 I may take that up and install it on my Toshiba, currently running Vista.

I'd absolutely upgrade from Vista. Vista is a steaming pile of shit. Windows 7 on the other hand is excellent, which is why it's a much less enticing upgrade for me.

So Techradar, The Verge and now Engadget. All say Win 8 is awesome once you get to know it, we knew there would be a learning curve. So if you have a modern laoptop that supports gestures it's worth the upgrade they say. IT's the most productive OS yet.

As I said, I was using Vista Basic - which is the shittest of shit. Six days into W8 though and I am hugely impressed. It is smooth and very fast. Recommended if you are running an old OS.

I wouldn't upgrade from W7 to this though, it's not a significant enough step forward to make it worth the hassle.

I know their first attempt at this was pretty shit. But this looks rather cool.

Dell xps12

Core i3 i5 i7

1920*1080 resolution on 12 inches

A bit low on RAM and ssd at 4 and 128 gig respectivly. And a hefty price

But this should take full advantage of win 8

:) Can't see anything specwise that would stop you using a real OS.

It was a semi-serious question. I guess they are only offering it with Windows. Ubuntu would run nicely on that, either way up.

OSX, Android, iOS and Linux. I've used them all and all windows back to 3.1

The whole os is amazingly helpful and very robust. Vastly superior to iOS and Android, which are clearly phone operating systems.

You used Linux and went back to Windows? I suppose it takes all sorts.

Did you ever try a touch screen Linux? You can get an ubuntu installer for the Nexus 7 if you want to try it. This isn't the same thing as the full linux instance that runs as an app under android btw, this is a native OS install.
