Dimitar Berbatov is on teh brink of a move to Aston Villa
The former Spurs, Manchester United and Fulham striker is a free agent after being released by French club Monaco at the end of the season.

Villa boss Sherwood is looking to boost his side's scoring options after struggling for goals last season, and former captain and crowd favourite Petrov, who was forced to retire in 2013 after being diagnosed with leukemia, has recommended his friend and ex-inertnational team-mate.

The 34-year-old, who is Bulgaria's top scorer with 48 goals, is discussing personal terms with Villa and a source close to the player said: "Stiliyan knows him very well. He knows that Berbatov is still a top-class striker and he believes he can be the right man for Villa."

Petrov, Bulgaria's most capped player, and Berbatov, the Balkan country's most popular export in the last decade, were also team-mates at CSKA Sofia in the late 1990s.

"They need a top striker now because they sold Christian Benteke to Liverpool," the source added. "You don't have many strikers with experience in the Premier League available at the moment.

"I know Dimitar has offers from Germany [Werder Bremen] and Turkey but his desire is to play in England once again. His family also prefers England and this could be his last chance to play there."

Berbatov has also been linked with a move to promoted Bournemouth this summer as they look to add experience and goals to their squad.

He joined Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen in 2006, and two years later moved to Manchester United for £30.75million.

"It'll be a pleasure [to return to England]," said Berbatov, who joined Monaco in 2014 from Fulham and helped the side reach the Champions League quarter-finals in April.

"I spent a long time in England and I keep very good memories. Everyone is watching the Premier League, and I'll be delighted to return."

One of my favourite players so I'd be chuffed to see him here. Not sure if it's sensible, but...

This is Aston Villa not a retirement home for ageing strikers.

My heart says yes, my brain says no.

My brain and my heart both say no.

Wow... Given the confidence in reporting and back page spread I'm pretty sure this has legs. Not sure what to make of it... Squad player? Would Berba sign up on those terms? But boy, can he play. Think of him threading balls through to the likes of Ayew, Sinclair and Gabby!

He was a sub at Monaco for most of second half of the season so doubt he can start in the prem anymore.

Even at his peak he was a liability in away games but would be great at home just playing off the main striker.

Can't see this being true, it's in the Express for a start and I get the feeling this might've been planted to speed the Adebayor deal along like that Man. United Benteke story that cropped up out of nowhere and without any substance.

No chance we sign Berbatov and Adebayor.

This is how I'm feeling about it. I remember watching him at VP when he was at Spurs, 07/08 season I think, and it was probably one of the best performances from a striker I've ever seen in the flesh, brilliant movement, link up play and he just glided around so effortlessly. But at 34 it would really have to be questioned whether he's still got it, cant say I've followed him at Monaco.
