4 Day Eueopean Roadtrip Ideas

Fellow Villa travellers, I consider myself relatively well travelled and enjoy thinking up ideas, however If possible I'd like some inspiration from others for an upcoming holiday for a mate and I.

Slap bang in Mid-August 14th-17th, we've both got 4-5 days available and are looking for a bit of an adventure in Europe. We're both mid-late 20s and the backpacking types. My mate is keen on a city break for that period and Istanbul was originally agreed, but the flight prices are outrageous and I'd rather not go for those prices...so...Im looking to offer him a counter proposal of a road or train trip somewhere else in Europe.

Ideas NOT to consider (as ive already covered these) are:-

Barcelona-Biarritz

Croatia

Birmingham-Valencia

Lisbon area

Bavaria

The ideal factors to consider are:- Warm, Offer some drinking opportunities, Offer some relaxation along the way somewhere nice (ideally lake/mountains/beach), if it could include a cultural festival of some sort that would be immense.

Some initial ideas of mine are:-

Balkan trip - Tirana to Athens

Montenegro-Macedonia

Bilbao-Porto

Romania

Southern tip of Spain

If anyone has any suggestions or experience I'd be really grateful to know.

Budget is not really an issue (within reason).

Drove Malaga to Barcelona once with stops in Granada and Torrevieja. That was nice.

Briancon is a lovely place to drive to. Easy to get to from Nice.

If Romania is something you want to do the route should go through here. Never done it myself but I would like to. Skip forward to about 4:55

Albania I was pleasantly surprised with you could do that in 4-5 days

I did Athens first then flew to Corfu and then you take a ferry to Albania ... It brings you in at a sea side resort but it's also near Butrint which is home to some very good Roman Ruins ... From there we had a driver take us to Tirana over a 3 day period stopping off at various interesting places along the way ... Berat (City of a thousand windows ) all very scenic and Tirana has a bit of culture as well

I think you'll struggle to do Montenegro to Macedonia , there are taxi firms that will drive you but the prices looked way to high..better bet would be Sarajevo and Belgrade as you can get a cheap flight between the 2... Draw back is no direct flight to Sarajevo but you could go via Zagreb ... Or Ryan air fly to Podgorica once a week and you could start there , get a taxi to Sarajevo and then fly to Belgrade

Sarajevo looks very interesting ( tunnel from the airport to the city ,etc ) Belgrade has Tesla stuff but Belgrade also has a big night life scene on boats along the river just outside of town

Macedonia I keep looking at but I don't think Skopje has enough to offer ... But You could take a train into Kosovo for a day or two though and also look at Lake Orhid ...

Romania - Bucharest is nice the old presidential palace is a highlight , easily a full day there and then you can go out and visit Translyvania , you can also get. Wizz air flight back from Cluj if I recall so you don't need to double back

Have another think about Turkey though Istanbul is fantastic and you can easily take in Troy , Espheues and Galipoli along with it in 5 days ... They have great coach networks that link a lot of these places . Check out Pegasus airlines as they are dirt cheap sometimes ( though maybe not in Aug )

Albania and Turkey i can post some itineraries that I did on Monday when am back in the office of ether of them sound interesting , will give you an idea of what is possible

Switzerland

Good driving, scenery, toblerone.

For your favoured temperature, select an altitude.

If you drive from UK you can notch up a tick list of 7 or 8 countries without trying too hard.

Bratislava and Vienna/Sarajevo and Mostar/Madrid and Valenica?

I was going to suggest a Vienna / Bratisalva / Budapest trip as they are all close to each other  :)
