U21 European Championship

Think this is the strongest squad England have had for a long while.

Berahino, Kane and Ings is an excellent trio of strikers who are all playing regularly in the prem and scoring good amount. Shame Bamford got injured and surprised Benik Afobe was left out.

At the back you have Stones and Carl Jenkinson playing regularly, Calum Chambers less so but he did play a fair amount for Arsenal up to xmas. Shame Luke Shaw is crocked again otherwise they would be an excellent defence.

Most interesting one for me is central midfield....not a lot of top level experience there but plenty of ball playing midfielders....Ward Prowse, Will Hughes, Bradley Pritchard.

Finally England have some young footballers in central midfield instead of the dogs of war Pearce used to play there like one tournament where he had NRC, Cattermole and Marc Noble who all constantly gave the ball away.

Not sure how the draw pans out but wouldn't shock me if England made the final.

will be watching for -

denmark - hojbjerg, fischer

germany - ginter, geis, volland, gnarby, knoche, kimmich, meyer (3 keepers are leno, horn and ter stegen )

italy - crisetig, rugani, romagnoli, berardi

portugal - william carvalho, cancelo

our game vs portugal is huge, dont think looking at the squads we should even fear italy that much, germany obviously stand out as a quality team but england wont have many places to hide if we bomb out

It looks like England have finally realised that the only way the senior side is going to progress in the long run is if the junior sides and particularly the U21 side are taken more seriously, so that the guys coming up through the ranks get some proper tournament/knock-out experience, preferably doing well in one by using their best players.  And by keeping their players together as they progress through the ranks they learn how to play alongside each other.  Obviously there are exceptions.  If you get a once-in-a-generation freak like Wayne Rooney then you skip him ahead, but otherwise keep them together if you possibly can.  Let them progress organically and you'll end up with a senior side that knows its onions and isn't like a disparate collection of blokes who've never played with each other before.

Otherwise you continue the pattern of bringing the better U21s into a flailing senior side as some kind of sticking plaster or as a 'reward' for being in good form and they end up contributing precious little, so they end up not involved in the senior side and not involved in the junior side.  Kane was dead right to want to go to this mid-season championships.

Stuart Pearce on Talksport "That William Cavarlho looks a decent player, I can see some big clubs interested in him after this tournament."

Yes Stuart if you'd bothered to do some research you'd have noticed clubs like Man. United and Arsenal have been linked to him in the last year.
