Genie
Got a little icon on my laptop (win8) asking me to 'get windows 10'. I assume this is the free upgrde they've promised to anyone with a Windows 7 or 8 device. Anyone on W10? Is it worth doing?
limpid Posted June 2, 2015 Administrator Share Posted June 2, 2015 Never, ever upgrade Windows. You'll end up with a botched system and have to re-install. Did you consent to them installing that icon?
daggy_333
I have the icon on my laptop and my pc, i don't recall consenting to the icon on either.
limpid Posted June 2, 2015 Administrator Share Posted June 2, 2015 I suspect that a few months after your "free upgrade" the system will be so unstable that you'll need to do an OS install. At full retail.
Genie
I'm quite happy with 8.1 tbh so really don't see the point in changing.
coda
Just noticed the ominous icon. I don't like 8.1 but limpid has put me off this upgrade.
PieFacE Posted June 2, 2015 VT Supporter Share Posted June 2, 2015 I'm running Windows 10 Preview Build and it's fine on my laptop. Not tried it on tablet yet. Been running it for a while now and it's incredibly stable.
Genie
Is it just some new fonts and wallpapers? I literally know nothing about windows 10 but have had no problem at all with win7 or win8.

I literally know nothing about windows 10 but have had no problem at all with win7 or win8. They've removed the Metro tile theme and incorporated it into the Desktop whilst bringing back the Start menu. Win 10 is loads better on Laptops/PC's than Win 8.

I've been running it for about one and a half months and seen no major issues at all. Think i've seen a Kernal error once or twice, but that also happened every now and again on Win 8 too so... I could do with a fresh install tbh... 3 months sounds like a reasonable timeline to format
limpid Posted June 2, 2015 Administrator Share Posted June 2, 2015 I think for most users a re-install means going to a shop, buying a licence and paying for the labour. I very rarely use Windows for anything now, but when I do, I'd never upgrade between versions. ElementaryOS is a better choice for most Windows users. Scratch that. ChromeOS is probably better for almost all users.
limpid Posted June 2, 2015 Administrator Share Posted June 2, 2015 PS. I've only had a kernel error in 20+ years using Linux when I've had a hardware failure. I get up times over 100 days regularly even on laptops. If you're re-installing that often then how do you get any work done?
mjmooney Posted June 2, 2015 VT Supporter Share Posted June 2, 2015 (edited) What I don't like is the fact that it's a "totally free" upgrade... FOR ONE YEAR. What happens then? No information on what (and how) they will charge. Massively out of order. Edited June 2, 2015 by mjmooney
Genie
I didn't realise it was only free for a year. I guess after a year they stop supplying updates (not sure where that leaves people for security patches).
