I've used PIA for years, on Sky and BT Internet and on Windows and Linux machines. I've not suffered with disconnects at all.

Anybody know which VPN I should use in China? I've tried Private Internet Access and StrongVPN (only used them in the UK), but I wasn't very satisfied with either of them.

To do what?

Get past the Great Firewall

They don't block VillaTalk. I don't think anyone will be able to help unless you actually say what you are trying to do and why you think it'll be blocked.

Use tor otherwise.

China blocks google and youtube.

I have used Astrill and this works. Not all work as China blocks some of them.

I use NordVPN. It's good. I use it in public wifi hotspots as everyone should. Loads of servers and most are very fast.

I have friends that live in China, they are very careful about their Internet usage and the use of VPNs etc. As foreigners and academics they're prime targets for surveillance.

Be aware using a VPN doesn't make you anonymous and you are only as safe as the VPN you trust, if they are compromised in terms of their professional integrity, data leaks or exploits, so is your data potentially.

A useful tool though.

What protection do you think you get from this when using public wifi? If you connect to an unknown network you can't know if your VPN session has been "man in the middled". I'd trust my mobile operator with VPN connections before any public network.
