Breathalyser test for football fans

 Hmmmm....

Cambridge United fans face breathalyser tests

Football fans face being breathalysed as part of a new scheme to crack down on alcohol-related crime.

The project, which will run indefinitely, was launched at Cambridge United's match against Burton Albion.

Anyone testing above twice the legal drink-drive limit will be ejected from the ground, but groundsman Ian Darler said fans had nothing to fear.

The scheme will also operate at Cambridge Junction and McDonald's in Rose Crescent.

Only fans who appear to be drunk are tested and passing a breath test is not necessary to enter the ground.

Mr Darler said: "Ninety-five per cent of fans will not even know the scheme is in operation".

Security staff at the venues have been given breathalyser kits allowing them to test people before entry.

Mr Darler said stewards had previously made a judgement on people they thought were drunk.

"This will give a fairer and more genuine result as to whether we eject someone," he said.

'Fairer result'

He added that only two arrests had been made at games this year.

The scheme is funded by Cambridgeshire Police and Crime Commissioner Sir Graham Bright.

Last year, in Cambridge city, 141 people were arrested for being drunk and disorderly or drunk and incapable in a public place.

Sgt Ian Wood said there were a number of alcohol-related laws around sporting events, including an offence of trying to enter a sports ground while drunk.

He said: "My concern is fans will be unaware of these offences. I hope the introduction of the devices will help stewards make empowered decisions about who should enter the ground."

Anyone turned away from a venue will be offered a scratchcard giving information about their drinking risk levels.

If they'd done this at Wembley, there's no way I would have got in the ground. The majority of the ground would have probably been empty. Same for many other Villa matches over the years.

Twice the drink drive limit? What's that? 3 or 4 pints?

Pathetic idea.

It's not even that is it? I thought the drink drive limit was something silly (or sensible IMO) like half a pint?

Is it that low?

I always thought it was 1 or 2 pints.

Drink drive limit is around a pint and a half I thought. If you're found to have drank 3 pints you won't be allowed in? Such a terrible idea.

The limit is a bit debateable, imo. twice the drink drive limit is too low.

But I think the idea of being stricter on letting drunk fans into the ground is a good one. If it takes breathalysers then so be it.

I've quite often been drunk going into football grounds, which results in nothing other than me singing a bit louder and adding to the atmosphere more. I don't think that's any reason to not allow me into the ground.

Not once have I caused any trouble or had any remote intention of doing so.

I'm all for not letting idiots into football grounds, but assuming that they are all the pissed ones is a bit of a shitty idea.

How drunk is drunk? What if I have a couple of pints and trip over the pavement when walking up to the ground?

Not letting people in for being pissed is one thing, this kind of Stasi-esq overkill is not the answer.

i think the whole idea of a limit is a bit silly. if you behave like a dick you should be thrown out, not because youre over the drinking limit. ive seen many drunks who can behave them selves in a good manner and people whos had one pint and then turned into a bellend

so you're allowed 4 pints before going in but then you can carry on drinking the over priced garbage inside the ground to your hearts content

to be fair its probably more for the argument (and id guess we've all been there) that comes when someone suggests you're too drunk and you cleverly answer back "no im not, prove it" well now they can prove it...

It's just the same as clubs and bars etc isn't it?

You're going in there to drink most of the time. But if you turn up off your tits you're not getting let in, rightfully so.

Don't really see the issue. As CED says, the article says not everyone gets tested, it's just a weapon to use so that they can refuse entry to potential troublemakers
